Have you ever known someone who’s committed or tried to commit suicide and thought, “I wish I would’ve done something, said something, to stop it from happening?” I know I would ask myself that question everyday if I hadn’t. A few years ago, a good friend of mine thought her life was so bad she wanted to end it. I did the only thing I could think, and told the nearest teacher. It may sound so childish or stupid, but it worked. Luckily, she’s still alive and well. I’m here to make sure you can make the difference and help a person who might be, or is suicidal. Just think of what would happen if you didn’t try to help.

People have different reasons to die by their own hands. Emotional, environmental, and, mental are the three categories that most people's reasons fall into. Undoubtedly, emotional causes often spur from breakups, or other drastic negative changes in social life. Oftenly, teens will commit suicide to “ escape feelings of pain, rejection, hurt, being unloved, victimization, or loss”(Tracy, 2016). Consequently, when teens have no solutions for their problems they feel that suicide is the solution. “Bullying, cyber bullying, abuse, detrimental home life, loss of a loved one or even a severe breakup” are ways that the environment can increase the chances of voluntary death (Tracy, 2016). Also, “Most teens who attempt suicide do so because of
There are many risk factors associated with suicidal ideation and attempts. Risk factors include self-destructive behavior which may be related to life events, unfavourable home environments, or a genetic component. Personality traits like aggression and hostility or feeling introverted or hopeless play a role in suicides. Loss of control, poor problem solving techniques, or rigid cognitive life styles are also characteristics of suicides. Similar traits are found in depressive behaviors. Teenagers may have been exposed to others who have had suicidal behaviors.
If you won’t then there’s absolutely no purpose in reading the rest. I hope that you will continue because each of us that joins this fight could be saving a life. While keeping an open mind, you must consider all of what follows and attempt, in some big or small way, to implement or aid in the implementation of these solutions. Some seem simple, yet simplicity goes a long way. I truly believe that the combination of these little things in our high schools, Juneau-Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School, will forever change the social stigma around suicide. These include promoting a positive and connected environment, implementing the necessary programs, actually asking the question about suicide to peers, and recognizing the signs and knowing what to do after. In the words of Janet Reno, Harvard Law graduate and former United States Attorney General, “We can make a
Depression is one of the main three reasons people commit suicide. Depression can happen following the passing of a loved one. It can be very hard and traumatic on anyone. Most people don’t know how to handle the pain. Eventually, the suffering becomes too much and they slip into depression. Some people can develop despair worse than others. Also, over ninety percent of suicides happen because of a mental illness. The
Death, its such an unexpected thing that happens to everyone at some point in their life. Some people die old, some go young. Others go without warning, just disappear from our lives without explanation. No letter, note or goodbye, they just leave us to never return. Death, or in this situation suicide. Such a horrible thing to the average person to lose someone that way. Never knowing why they did it, left with loose ends that will never be tied up. For others its a glorious thing, the accept it as a way of life or something that has to be done to “save” them or their family. Suicide is looked differently in a particular culture compared to how americans see it. The samurais see it as honor to them or their loved ones after dishonoring them. To them its not something to be feared but to be excepted, death in this form will bring back honor so that their families don't have to suffer in their lives. In America though suicide is seen as such a horrible thing. We don't understand why someone would take their life so soon, what would push them to decide to end their life? Most americans fear death, they can't stare him in the eye and except what is going to happen to them, but some few stare at death and welcome him. Every person, culture, state, country sees suicide in a different way. Either in Peace, honor and respect or as something unexplainable and all too sudden, some might even just see it as something that happened and never second guess it. How ever a person and place may view it we are all impacted the same way.
Before elaborating on what causes suicide it should be understood what we mean by cause. The Oxford English Dictionary defines cause as “a person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon or condition.” This essay will in part examine the methods employed by suicidal patients though this is secondary to whatever caused them to make this decision. The essay will consider the epidemiology of suicide (also regarding suicide clustering) followed by the potential genetic risk factors. This will be followed by the psychological factors such as depressive disorders, and finally the environmental risk factors such as low socioeconomic status and substance abuse.
Suicidal tendencies in adolescents begin around the ages of 10 through 19, with warning signs, prevention, treatment, and the causes and effects it has on the human psyche. Suicide is when someone decides to take his or her own life because and are suffering from a painful mental treatable illness and have lost hope in who they are. Because when hope is lost, some feel like suicide is the only solution to truly make the adolescents pain go away permanently. Scientific evidence that shows the people who have committed suicide had a diagnosable treatable mental disorder or substance abuse disorder (The National Institute of Mental Health, 2010). Those people might have been suffering from illness such as depression, mood disorders, personality disorders and or suffering from bullying. Being a victim of bullying can be linked to suicidal thoughts as well as behavior in adolescents. Other causes might also include having family problems at home, problems at work, school and or with school peers. Suicide is a serious problem though it not only affects the victim, but it also affects family members, loved ones, along with friends.
Committing suicide probably sounds like a foreign idea to most people, but to the people who think about it, they deal with it every day. More importantly, the question is what leads people to kill themselves? In general, most people do not want to actually kill themselves, even though many people joke about it on a daily basis. Being a human, we all have a certain amount of will to live. Depression is the major cause for suicidal thoughts and ideas. After a long enough period of time, people become worn down and become less and less happy.
In the Philippines alone, it is estimated that about 3 million people are living with depression. Depression is the driving force of committing suicide. Just last Tuesday, I’ve heard a news about a Senior High school student committed suicide by jumping off from the 7th floor of the building. I’ve heard that it was her third attempt to suicide, and the last. It was also said that the person wasn’t the type who would talk about her problems.
The family can be just too ignorant about them or they might cause the harm to these people that lead them to kill themselves. The physicians might ignore the fact that their patients are capable of suicide. Lastly, the workplace, especially the schools are the main place of the cause of suicides because of bullying of their peers. These are just the three main things that can be responsible for a person’s suicide, there is probably a possible cause that can be held responsible for someone else’s suicide. Suicide is a very serious cause of death because it has its mystery that goes with it because people always find the reason why these people kill themselves.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, scientific evidence has shown that almost all people who take their own lives have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder, and the majority have more than one disorder. In other words, the feelings that often lead to suicide are highly treatable. That’s why it is imperative that we better understand the symptoms of the disorders and the behaviors that often accompany thoughts of suicide. With more knowledge, we can often prevent the devastation of losing a loved one.
There are many reasons that people consider suicide. They may be looking to block unbearable emotional pain, which causes a wide variety of problems. A person attempting suicide is often depressed that they are incapable of understanding their options. Suicidal thoughts develop frequently when a person believes they cannot cope with overwhelming life situations. A variety of factors contribute to the rising of deathly suicide in American, including mental illness and interactions with significant others.
Often times when I heard the word "suicidal" I was curiously caused the person to do it. Growing up, I heard that people decided to commit suicide was because they "wanted attention, they wanted the easy way out, they were weak, they couldn't handle life, etc." Personally, I have significant people in my life that have felt like they wanted to commit suicide. So, this topic honestly is a difficult, yet, emotional one to discuss.
