Your spine is the center of your body. It’s your universe. It connects your head, torso, arms and legs together, and when your spine is compromised, the rest of your body feels it’s effects. Your back pain doesn’t have to come from a sudden injury. While automobile collisions and contact sports cause immediate injuries, a majority of the pain we treat at my clinic is caused by bad habits that have compounded over many years.
For instance, let's say you work 40 hours a week for 15 years. For eight hours a day, you spend a majority of your time sitting at your desk. This equates to roughly 31,200 hours spent sitting over 15 years — not taking into account the time you spend driving, eating, and watching TV. Now compare that to the amount of
time you spend being active. If you exercise for 30 minutes a day, three days a week, you have 1,170 active hours over 15 years. This comparison is valuable. The human body isn’t meant to spent this much time in a single position, but, your body works for you, and it will try to make it happen. This is because your body is an adaptable, and muscle degeneration is it’s secret weapon. During those 31,200 hours, you’ve adapted to maintaining a poor posture and a sedentary lifestyle. Over time, the muscles down the front and back of your legs have shortened. These muscles connect to the bones of your back and as they adhere to your sitting position, they put more pressure on your back. This forces the discs in your spine to be pushed backward — leading to a herniated disc — and causes pain to shoot down into your legs. So how do you deal with the pain? Painkillers only masks the pain, and force you to spend your days living as a product of your pain. You need to fix the cause of your pain. The real solution is to change the mechanics of your body. Rather than just medicating your symptoms, you need to take the bull by the horns and be the cause of your improvement. I treat people everyday who are making the choice to improve their back health by using movement as a treatment. It’s time for you to take control. Keep an eye out for “The Power Of Physical Therapy” in our December Newsletter, where we’ll dive deeper into finding a solution for your back pain.
Contemporary literature is the sharing of timeless truths that still hold relevance in our current society in a current manner. There is a saying “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the Sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9, n.d.). What the saying means is that anything we experience now has already been experienced and to believe that you have a fresh new idea, way of thinking, activity or anything than you are mistaken. Everything that can be thought of already has been. The story that I read during this session that reminds of this and has helped shape my view on contemporary literature is “Car Crash While Hitchhiking”, it was written by Denis Johnson. I’m going to explain how this story in
The lumbar region of the human spine is a location that is very susceptible to injury and trauma. A majority of the population experience back pain at some time during their life, and although in most cases the pain subsides after a time of rest, there is an enormous need for treatment of this malady. The various types of treatment for lumbar disc herniations include a more conservative method of rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory or non-steroidal drugs. A more extreme condition would require surgery to try to alleviate the symptoms. The older, more traditional surgery is a posterior laminotomy, however, newer less invasive microscopic and endoscopic surgeries been implemented to increase success and recovery time as well. Although most of these operations are performed on the posterior, anterior surgeries are also performed, depending upon the nature of the injury. While these surgeries partially remove disc material affecting the spinal cord, another type of surgery is used to remove the disc entirely and replace it with prosthetics. Still, there are alternative treatments including chiropractic care, acupuncture, and physical therapy that are increasing in popularity. Due to the sensitivity and vulnerability of the spinal cord, the diagnosis and treatments have a moderate risk of failure, and force a patient to explore numerous options to relieve pain.
Ben Roethlisberger, commonly known as Big Ben is a quarterback player of Pittsburgh Steelers who suffered a Lisfranc injury in a game. He was carted off because of his serious foot injury that will compromise his mobility and scramble ability.
Tests after tests including MRI’s, X-rays, and experimental procedures were performed to show I had five ruptured disks in the lower lumbar section of my back. Tedious Examination done by a group of doctors concluded I had a crippling disease of the spinal column called spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that causes compression of the spinal cord. (Lohr,1) If this disease was ignored any longer, it would lead to many other problems affecting other areas of my back to help support this weakness. It was an extremely rare case for an athlete my age.
Head injury is about damage to any of the structures of the head as a result of trauma. It is most often used to refer to an injury to the brain. Head injury involves the bones, muscles, blood vessels, skin, and other organs of the face or head. The injury may be only a minor bump on the skull or a serious brain injury. Head injury can be either closed or opened. Head injuries either will cause bleeding within the skull or damage on the scalp and surface of the head. These injuries may be in the form of lacerations, bumps, or bruises. There are four main type of head injury, there are closed injury, open injury, concussion, scalp wound.
Physical activity is the key to success in the treatment of chronic low back pain (CLBP), and exercise itself has the most permanent and long lasting effects (Abenhaim et al. 2000). Although the variety of conservative, complementary, and surgical treatments available, such as medication, thermotherapies, ergonomic and self-care advices, and patient education, proven to be beneficial for CLBP, at the present time the main aim is to provide effective interventions as well as reduce the health care costs.

Posture Correction – Poor posture is a major issue involved in back pain. Poor posture is also unattractive and unhealthy to the body. Good posture helps the body maintain balance and stay aligned. Inversion therapy helps to realign your spine so you can enjoy the health benefits of good
There is suggested evidence that a number of anatomical structures such as, bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, joints and neural structures cause back pain (Hoy, Brooks, Blyth & Buchbinder, 2010). Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition that is believed to cause chronic back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It occurs when there is an extrusion of disc material into the surrounding tissue (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It is also suggested that abnormal stress of the ligaments, muscles and mechanoreceptors contribute to back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). The main cause of chronic back pain has not been identified, but there are many suggested issues that are believed to contribute to chronic back pain.
A muscle trauma which, is also known as a muscle strain is an injury which, occurs within the muscle tendon. The pain can be classified into three different sections which are; mild, moderate and severe. The main cause of a muscle strain is when the muscle is overstretched since the muscles have probably been working too hard. If a muscle tear occurs, it can also damage the attaching tendons within the muscles because, the muscle tissues are stretched and then torn (2).
Head injuries are very serious and dangerous. Some head injuries can cause neurological brain damage. They are commonly found in the sports world, putting athletes at risk. There are a lot of head injuries that are dangerous or could cause serious damage brain and in turn, the body. Because of this, precautions, rules, and guidelines need to be in place to prevent and treat these athletes. If these things are not put in place, it could mean the difference between life and death for these athletes. There are many different injuries that can occur to the head and face. Facial injuries can be very dangerous as it can concern the eyes nose and mouth.
Concussion Safety and Prevention The bulky headgear that athletes wear when playing a sport are hard and look very protective, but are they really the safest thing athletes can wear. People are creating and testing helmets that will protect players from concussions. There is a big emphasis on safety today in football.
People think that solving the physical cause of back pain will stop pain altogether. The more people keep trying to fix their physical pain, the more “solutions” people are trying to find, the more confused they become and the more they actually end up hurting themselves.
The pick-up bounced jarringly down the old dirt road. The driver sat up straight in the front seat, checking over her shoulder every few seconds to make sure that her cargo hadn't fallen out.
With yoga as a part of your daily routine, physical health issues can be treated. Back Pain if left untreated can lead to surgery. Ways of avoiding surgery include relaxing the nerves, fixing your posture, loosening and strengthening the muscles, which can be corrected by the practicing of yoga. Bad posture can eventually cause nerves in the spine to come out which are painful for the spinal disk and vertebrae. By gaining physical awareness by using yoga stretching and breathing you can focus more on the sensations your body feels while doing the simplest of tasks such as washing your dishes. (McCall 190) Effect of Short-Term Intensive Yoga Program on Pain, Functional Disability And Spinal Flexibility in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Control Study writes “Deep relaxation of the spinal muscles achieved during safe body movements with mindful awareness may form the basis of improvement observed in flexibility and pain within this short period of intervention” (Tekur et al.
