Getting Global: Examples of Problems That Occur in Intercultural Communication Have you ever experienced misunderstandings between someone with other cultural backgrounds that you were not aware of? In English class, we read an essay,“Stumbling Blocks in Intercultural Communication” by Laray M. Barna. In the article, the author introduced the six stumbling blocks of intercultural communication; 1. Assumption of Similarities, 2. Language Differences, 3. Nonverbal Misinterpretations, 4. Tendency to Evaluate, 5. Stress, and 6. Culture Shock. 1. Assumption of Similarities is explaining that we should not be assuming everyone thinks in the same way only because we all have the same biological needs for food and shelter. Furthermore, beliefs and …show more content…
baseball”. In this scene, an American man is eating noodles with a Japanese family. While others were slurping the noodles, the American man looked confused and uncomfortable, because slurping is considered rude and disgusting in the U.S. culture. Then, his girlfriend told him that slurping is actually an appropriate manner in Japan, so he stuffed a huge amount of noodles in his mouth and slurped as loudly as he could. However, this turned out to be overdoing, so the Japanese family stared at him in contempt. This situation can be an example of 1. Assumption of Similarities. The Japanese family assumed and expected the American man to behave the way Japanese do. However, the American man was confused because the values of the two cultures are actually very …show more content…
visiting Italy. He falls in love with an Italian woman, Sofia, and he offers to help her with her grocery bags. They become close as the man walks Sofia home. One day, the man left a love letter accompanied with a bouquet of chrysanthemums on a motorcycle parked in front of Sofia’s house. Then, a truck knocked down the motorcycle, making it look like Sofia died in an accident. This is because in Italy, Chrysanthemums represents funerals. Other neighbors came to leave chrysanthemums on her door steps. After a while, Sofia opened her front door and became puzzled by the situation. This can be an example of 1. Assumption of Similarities. The American man did not anticipate about the meanings the flower has in other cultures, and ended up making Sofia’s whole neighborhood think that Sofia died in an
These situations that I have expressed through my life are only of two percent of the incidents that have happened to me. Moving to different cities have helped me understand more then most people. There are conflicts around me from people with different backgrounds. I have my own conflict with myself because I know very little about my own heritage, but living through others, has helped unit myself with the comfort of myself with letting me accept everyone. Misconceptions are huge roles that cause such areas of conflict. Let’s try to stop them, there is no such thing as a culture shock, unless you believe there to be one.
Intercultural communication is a significant, unavoidable element of communication in the 21st century. With the vast movements of population throughout history, as well as the growing prominence of technology, the ability to interact and come into contact with different cultures, both ethnic and sub-cultures, has never been easier. However, with this growing role of intercultural communication, there is a large opportunity for the existence and perpetuation of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. In order to avoid offence and miscommunication when partaking in intercultural communication, a person must be willing to understand a person as an individual entity, and not as a representation of their culture or of what the host culture may believe it to be.
If we aren’t understanding of the variances between cultures and the way they communicate verbally, emotionally, and nonverbally this can create considerable issues. The three primary problems that could arise if we don’t have an understanding of cultural differences are the ways we interpret others comments and actions, how we predict future behaviors, and conflicting behaviors of others (“Differences in Culture,” n.d). Culture plays a significant part in peoples lives because it shapes our personal values and views on the world. Having a perspective and understanding a persons culture is important because each culture is different in respect to personal views and behaviors, but it is key to respect their culture because just like us it shaped who they are. The reason we have stereotypes of other cultures is because of this particular reason, we assume that our culture is superior and the correct way to do things. For example, I have heard the stereotype that French people are impolite, offensive, and they hate Americans, but was this stereotype created because of a misunderstanding between cultures? Cultural differences can be educational because it allows us to understand the uniqueness of a culture and allows us to learn new things. Cultural differences allow people to feel a sense of belonging, which can be empowering knowing
We all have something in common with our intercultural groups, but ultimately our different co-cultures make us into thinking in different ways. It is important to always ask questions to understand where others come from so we can better communicate with them. It also doesn’t hurt to mimic their nonverbal cues to ensure that you are not insulting them because of a different cultural background. Cultural bias’, they never get very far in life.

In the text, we talked about during the course of this class is stereotypes, which the text defines as “widely held beliefs about a group of people (Intercultural Communication).” In my life and in my community,
When individuals or groups from different cultures communicate, this process is called intercultural communication. The transaction process of listening and responding to people from different cultural backgrounds can be challenging. The greater the difference in culture between two people, the greater the potential of misunderstanding and mistrust. Misunderstanding and miscommunication occur between people from different cultures because of different coding rules and cultural norms, which play a major role in shaping the patterns of interaction (Jandt, 2012).
“Like all people, we perceive the version of reality that our culture communicates. Like others having or living in more than one culture, we get multiple, often opposing messages. The coming together of two self-consistent, but habitually incomparable frames of reference causes a cultural collision.” - Gloria E. Anzaldua. Meaning when two cultures collide, it can cause problems, like the problems caused in Things Fall Apart when the cultural beliefs of the natives and the British colonists clash. Cultural collision can be a concern for a family, for example. One person may be from a different country than the other. Therefore, they would both have their cultural traditions that they would somehow
I have learned a great deal about different cultures and the communication between those cultures. I didn’t really think I would learn as much as I did. I am from an older cohort than most of the people in my class; therefore my experience level is a little greater. This did not prevent me from learning a few things and enhancing the knowledge I already have.
Effective communication with people of difference cultures can be especially challenging. The way people interpret the world can be strikingly different between cultures. Intercultural communication occurs when a member from one culture produces a message that is absorbed by a member of another culture. How that message is understood by the communicating party is a vital part in intercultural communication. For example, in Cambodia it would be considered rude to discuss business in a social setting (Language, culture, customs and etiquette, n.d.). However, in the United States this is a common practice and is almost an encouraged event. Another important factor and consideration in intercultural communication is the importance of understanding cultures, values, history and beliefs. For instance, in Cambodia, if you deliver a present that is wrapped in white paper, this is considered to represent mourning. This is one of the many reasons why it is important to assimilate into a culture and be mindful of communication between cultures (Language, culture, customs and etiquette, n.d.).
I wasn 't quite sure what I was getting into when I first enrolled in Intercultural Communications. I had assumptions as to the goals of the course such as I would be learning about the way cultures interact with each other, learn about communication in general, or I would be learning about the ways we use communication through our culture. I think that I achieve the latter goal, but I also gained knowledge about more then just my culture. I came to realize that there is more to a culture than just language, appearances, and customs, which are aspects of culture that could be seen above the waterline, or they are more noticeable/obvious to someone outside of that culture. There are aspects of culture that are below the waterline, or more
In conclusion, Barna discusses the five stumbling blocks in cross-cultural, and I overall agree with the four stumbling blocks, which are the language, nonverbal signs and symbols, preconceptions
Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze these three notions in situations in which intercultural communication is frequent such as : the workplace, the classroom and vacation trips.
Abstract: Globalization has made intercultural communication inevitable. Communicating with other cultures characterizes today’s business, classroom, and community. Technology, especially the internet, has increased the probability that whatever is documented online will be read by someone from another culture. Intercultural communication is of importance in any career field, thus the art of knowing how to communicate with other cultures should be a workplace skill that is emphasized. This is a conceptual paper whose purpose is twofold.
