“I will be honest, there are some kids, I take them into the (kitchen) lab, and they can’t even measure…we are talking basic, basic skills. I think that has a lot to do with the family structure, how the family has changed” (Wischmeyer). Home Economics was a mandatory and popular class in the 1980’s and 1990’s. This class taught more than how to frost a cake, it taught basic and detailed skills such as sewing a button, measuring and sanitizing skills. In this class learning to manage a budget and preparing a meal were strong components as well as learning to use basic tools. Some saw it as a Woman’s’ class, but it had important skills that all people must know. As years pass, more schools are dropping the Home Economics programs, but they must be included in all High School Curriculum because it helps teach necessary basic skills, explore different job opportunities, and it is a much needed, dying traditional class.
Learning basic skills such as, hem a skirt, or create a budget, are practical life skills that are to be taught in Home Economics classes. “The basics of cooking, shopping, and ‘Balancing a Checkbook,’ once seen as knowledge that any young woman… should have are now often not learned by young people of either gender, even as we have come to understand their major societal implications” (Graham). Basic skills listed above are not being taught in the schools, and are not guaranteed to be taught at home. Knowing these skills can help many teenagers grow and succeed after high school, and have the skills to survive once they move out. “Working people have become dependant on the service industry. We can no longer hem our skirts; we pay a seamstress or tailor to do it. Instead of creating a budget ourselves, we pay a f...

The first manual training school, established in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1879, set the foundation for modern career and technical education (Association for Career and Technical Education, 2013). The St. Louis Manual Training School became a model for other schools, establishing a long-lasting relationship with public education using hands-on learning as one of their techniques. By the 1900, domestic science reached the public school systems which began the rise of the Home Economics program (Vocational age emerges, 1876-1926, 1976). The evolution of Home Economics will evolve several times before it is finally known as Family and Consumer
Just as a caterpillar changes into a complex and beautiful butterfly over time, education too is evolving and changing into something completely different than the “3 R’s” of the past. How education should evolve is a highly disputed topic. Although there appear to be many solutions these solutions often have many flaws. There has yet to be a single solution to solve this dilemma. Even though their perspectives on education differ, Brian D. Ray and Rachel S. Cox seek to tackle this issue in their respective articles, “Does Home Schooling Promote the Public Good?” and “The Home School Debate.” Ray is biased toward home-schooling being the solution to the ails of public education and believes that education issues can be resolved by encouraging

Homeschooling offers students a more time efficient education that allows the student to focus on education in which is the sole purpose for school. Homeschooling also gives the teacher a thorough evaluation of a student’s strengths and weaknesses by visually seeing what subjects they excel in and what subjects they are weak in. At this point students can increase their individual progression in each subject. Homeschooling permits control of the environment a student learns in to retain the focus of the student. This will reduce the chances of drug usage, bullying, and violence. Samuel Blumenfeld said this on the importance of homeschooling “The home is a safe haven for the children in a world awash with drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, violence, and moral corruption” (Cindy Mur et al.76). When parents come to realize that the home is the safest place for their children, then will they act as Blumenfeld concludes “I look forward to the day when the public schools will be virtually empty not because we have abolished public education but because the parents will have abandoned it” (Cindy Mur et al.
Lyman(2006) writes about the definition, history, and current social importance of homeschooling in the United States. The author defines the education which is provided at home instead of school as homeschooling. She sates thatearlier homeschooling was confined mostly to the handicapped children who were not fit along with the regular students, who need extra care and the wealthier classes who wanted their children to be prepared for university studies. She continues to give an information that the number of families considering their children to have their schooling at home is increasing every year with the awareness of the positive traits of homeschooling followed bythe research work by the educational specialists, even while other education

Education is one of the major factors that influence the division of housework between men and women. Education plays important roles in society and to ensure the progression of the public, each person’s duty is to contribute to its development considering education is the greatest tool for accomplishing this goal. The basic ingredients of the society are men and women, however mostly societies think that w...

“Is getting a good education important to you?” Most people when asked this question would answer, “Yes.” This is because it teaches us valuable life skills and prepares us to communicate and engage with others in the world. Education has taken on many forms over the years, and one of the more successful components of education has been homeschooling. Once considered a criminal act of defiance, homeschooling is now legally an option in all fifty states for parents to consider, and it has a substantial
Today, many parents are homeschooling their children. A U.S. Department of Education’s report shows that approximately 1.5 million children were being homeschooled in 2007 (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). This is almost 3 percent of all school age children (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). A private researcher, the National Home Education Research Institute, estimates 2.5 million children were being homeschooled in the 2007 – 2008 academic years (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). By either count, homeschooling is growing exponentially.
In the recent times, home schooling has been the most sought mode of learning by the American parents. In fact, it estimated that over 1 million children in America are now undergoing home schooling (Cooper, 2005). Although this form of learning is legally acceptable, parents are entrusted with teaching and coaching their children in all subjects. In addition, parents can also hire private tutors for their children as part of home schooling. This form of learning is aimed at ensuring that parents commit themselves in ensuring their children are able to learn like other kids in public schools.
