The article Implications of AI and Ethics in Academic Settings by Timothy Quinn (Implications of AI) and the writing Teenagers in Dreamland by Robert J. Samuelson provide information on the ever-changing school experience for teens. This essay highlights important trends in recent AI advancements, growing apathy, steadily increasing teen job rates, a decline in expectations, and parental guilt constantly leading teens and school students to be comfortable doing less and less and this is degrading students' education. High school has been a significant part of every child's life since the 1900s. Starting at age 14 or 15, students begin high school and enter the final years of the state-required schooling. Samuelson writes that “Students from similar economic and social backgrounds consistently outperform their peers in public high schools when attending Catholic schools...” The article continues saying this higher performance in Catholic schools is due to the more in-depth basic educational courses and 50% more homework is assigned. Additionally, Implications of AI by Quinn emphasizes that “Student interest in assignments can significantly enhance their effort” suggesting that topics assigned should be relevant and within their expertise. Supported by sociologist James Colman, this research undeniably concludes that students learn more and put in more effort when schools teach more and expect higher effort from them.
