The main concept I took from chapter 13 is be professional a graduate students main goal should focus on building a brand or reputation as a professional student. Students should surround themselves around other students that have professional reputations or have the same goals and objectives as them. Being a graduate student should be treated as a job, so avoid negativity, gossip, and inappropriate conduct. Peters warns the reader the damages that can be caused by students who participate in gossiping and the effects it can have on your reputation as a student. Displaying a positive attitude or what Peters describes a cheerful disposition will make you appear professional when interacting with both professors and other students. It’s okay
According to Guideline 1.06 (a) In many communities and situations, it may not be feasible or reasonable for behavior analysts to avoid social or other non-professional contacts with persons such as clients, students, supervisees, or research participants. Behavior analysts must always be sensitive to the potential harmful effects of other contacts on their work and on those persons with whom they deal (Bailey & Burch, 2011, p. 65) A situation in which a behavior analyst faced the possible development of a dual relationship will be presented, as well as the steps that were taken in an attempt to avoid it. Guideline 1.0 Responsible Conduct of A Behavior Analyst states that the behavior analyst maintains the high standards of professional behavior of the professional organization. In our assigned text, Bailey and Burch specify that you should strive to avoid social contacts with your clients because it might interfere with your objectivity as a behavior analyst (2011) in regard to Guideline 1.06 Dual Relationships and Conflicts of
In his essay, “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s,” Brent Staples argues that grade inflation in colleges results in college degrees becoming less valuable. Staples points out that grade inflation is happening among all colleges and there are many factors contributing to this problem. Colleges are willingly giving students good grades that they do not deserve so that the course will not be omitted from the lack of attendance. Part-time teachers’ jobs are at risk because their position is not guaranteed. These teachers were sometimes threatened by the students saying they will complain if their grades are not adjusted for a higher score. With this being said, students are putting pressure on teachers, causing their jobs to be in danger.
Throughout the semester, we have been introduced to many topics related to interpersonal communication. I have come to believe that these concepts have allowed me to better understand interactions that occur in our daily lives. My knowledge of these concepts was challenged when asked to relate these notions to a movie. During the time that I was watching the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I realized myself grasping onto what was going on and being able to relate certain scenes and situations to topics I had previously learned about. Interactions in My Big Fat Greek Wedding display concepts of conflict and politeness theory, which can be pointed out in a few specific scenes.
Although Troy’s advice of not worrying about being liked could create a hostile work environment, it should not be the only thing you are concerned about. You want to be likable but not strive to be liked and have it be all you are worried about. According to Huffington Post, “You’ve got to assert yourself to be seen and heard so you can be recognized for the great work you are accomplishing. Nobody ever earned kudos on a performance evaluation for being nice,” this would be where getting your “book-learning” would come in handy and even possibly make you star
Cost-benefit analysis is a systematic process for calculating and analyzing both the cost and benefit and then calculating which action is best for one to be involve in, actions such as; an activity, an decision, or an government policy and figuring out the benefits and costs of the project. One has to determine if the choice one is making is sound and that they would benefit from it rather than receiving zero gratification out of it. The cost of cheating in an University is that one will be on disciplinary probation, suspension, dismissal from Winthrop, and etc. Cheating is like a major crime in college. There are a few benefits from cheating include assuring one a good grade, with little work/studying required. However, the consequences of cheating and getting caught by a professor overweight any benefits that one might think cheating may have.
One major controversy in America today deals with the corporate company of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides health care, sex education, and information pertaining to anything in reproductive health care to men and women around the world. Over 1.5 million people get provided with sexual education every year through Planned Parenthood, and 2.7 million people in the U.S alone annually visit Planned Parenthood, and over 5 million men and women around the world. This company’s main goal is to prevent unintended pregnancies, and inform young and old on the measures to take if and when unwanted pregnancies happen. There are many different view points with this organization today, and currently it is a major controversy in the eyes of our government.
There will be conversations with peers and professors in which every student must be able to voice their own opinion while also taking other opinions and thoughts into consideration. Being open to new perspectives and learning from them is the best way to become well-rounded and to learn how to think outside of one’s own comfort zone. Professional communication should be scholarly especially when writing papers or research. The goal is to be as clear and precise as possible so that anyone can easily understand what it is being said. Professional communication should also be clear of any prejudice and for the most part clear of bias. On the other hand, personal background experiences could shed light on new topics for other
What steps can be taken by both individuals and the student body in order to prevent and eliminate these occurrences? “My hope is that as a community we can treat each other with more respect,” said Krull. “The way to do this is to have open dialogues about how we deserve to be treated, what we think and how we perceive things differently.”
School has been hectic in a good way. Its senior year, where there is a lot of pressure on what is my next step. I know for a fact that I want to go to college. I have my list of where I want to go, some of the colleges are University of Connecticut, Vanderbilt University, Quinnipiac University, Mount St. Mary College, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Baruch College, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, High Point University. I am thinking of majoring in International Business and minoring in linguistics, or double majoring in International Business and International relations and minoring in linguistics. Let me know your opinion on what you think of my majors and schools and let me know if you have any suggestions.
Most employees feel that as long as you are doing your job well there is no need to display professional behavior in the work place. This is simply not the case, but it has everything to do with your behavior. The behavior you display on the job can have a profound affect on your working relationships with your boss, co-works and even the customers you serve. For instance you may be great at your current position on the job, but your co-workers and even customers have been complaining about your nasty attitude towards them. The attitude you displayed can have severe consequences and may even cost you your job. Professionalism is not just what you know, but also the behavior you display while on the
Gossip in the workplace is described as a type of “storytelling discourse” that exists in the “unmanaged spaces” of organizations (Michelson et al., 2010, p. 373). Gossip allows employees to express their opinions, emotions, beliefs and attitudes about workplace life. As a result, gossip is usually expressed in small, trusted groups, which ultimately plays a significant role in the maintenance of relationships within the organization (Michelson et al., 2010). Social norms usually influence whether gossip is accepted as a type of organizational communication, as well as establishing the expectations of who gossips to whom and about what subject (Michelson et ...
On May 28th, 2012, I was able to come to Portland, Oregon from Ethiopia. School wasn’t easy for me. I remember, I couldn’t understand what the teachers or the students were saying. I would cry and beg my mom to let me stay home because I felt left out at school. I usually sat in the back row to avoid questions from the teachers. However, I was fortunate to be a part of the Upward Bound program. It helped me to navigate resources and to improve my English. It was difficult to integrate into a new American culture, but I didn’t allow that to discourage me. I went after different opportunities to improve my English skills. I began to read more books, study hard, and even joined a soccer team, which gave me confidence to express myself. I
Your academic curriculum sets the foundation for your career in the future. Like other students who are considering working abroad or for a multi-national corporation, you may be taking French for your second language. French is a great choice. It’s spoken on five continents. You can easily work through your French lessons with the assistance of a French tutor using Varsity Tutors. Varsity Tutors' educational directors are experienced at helping students in Milwaukee, WI, find independent French tutors.
There are many different types of students. All students have their own way of studying and learning material. A student’s attitude is the most determining factor in how well a student performs academically. Some students are eager to learn and try their best; however, some students could care less about learning. Each year students decide whether they will succeed or fail in school. All students fall into one category or another. Students can be classified into three categories: Overachievers, Average Joes, and Do Not Give a Rips.
After viewing the video by Wolfram (2010), I believe that as teachers we need to prepare more for using computers. Most of my students have a smartphone. And they use it for almost everything, including using the calculator. “Using new technologies involves time, effort, and a rethinking of instructional approaches.” (Sousa. 2015, p. 129). I learned math in a paper, and I love it, but I feel that today that is not enough for our students. Our students get bored about doing calculation the whole time on a piece of paper. Wolfram (2010) questioned, “Do we really believe that the math that most people are doing in school practically today is more than applying procedures to problems they don 't really understand, for reasons they don 't get?”
