Taking the student development class was very helpful. I feel that all the different topics we learned were very important because they all show us what we can do to become a better student. The one that I felt that helped me the most is the student educational plan. Like I said in the final discussion, when I arrived enrolled in Bakersfield College in the spring of 2014, I had to figure out what classes to take on my own. I did meet with a councilor when I pick out my classes for the first time. The councilor ask what I wanted to major in and I told her nursing. All she told me was that the classes I needed were all full already. She didn’t even tell me which classes they were and I was too shy and nerves to ask. So she helped me pick out two general education classes and that was it. She did not let me know about the student educational plan or tell me what kind of class I should take next.
A year into college, I was telling another student that I did not know what classes to pick for next semester and she ask me if I had made a SEP. I had no idea what that was and she told me to take a student development class. Making a semester-by-semester plan can be very default especially if you want to transfer to another college. I feel better now that I can see what classes I took

I was that kind student that always procrastinates when it came to school work. I did not want to continue to be that student. I would see how it was effecting me grades. I would do well on homework, but when it came test taking, I did not do so well. I think it was because I was such in a rush to finish my homework that I did not learn anything. Last semester I told myself that I would change that and I did. Since we went over time management I knew it could help me utilize my time better. I have been putting the tips and tricks to
Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
I left this course with the skills I can take advantage of in the future. Mrs.Cohen had been to college, therefore, she was able to give tips and tricks on how to survive college. If anyone had a concern, she would give them advice to help them. She offered her time after class to anyone who would want to sit down with her and chat about future plans so she could guide them. Mrs.Cohen made me feel she actually cared about each and every one of us. Classmates and I were all provided with college and scholarship information and anything needed to succeed in applying for college. She was willing to lend an ear to any complaints made. She is a large reason to why this class impacted me a great deal. She openly embraced and expressed her true self without being ashamed of it and I loved it. It felt as she could relate and understand the
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
Habits cannot be improved overnight; they take a long time and lots of persistence. Every time someone chooses not to attempt to perk up their habits, their chances of successfully changing them fall to zero. I credit small wins, which are “influence[s] disproportionate to the accomplishments of the victories to themselves,” for improving my study habits (Duhigg 112). There is a clear cause and effect here that is predictable, small wins set in motion another small win and many small wins become big wins. I had many small wins. I did little by little to eventually get entire assignments and readings done. To sum up, I stopped procrastinating when I discovered that the library signals me to start doing my homework causing me to find other useful habits that were invaluable to getting stuff
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
I had no idea what to expect when I first started college. I had always thought about it, but, because I was homeschooled my entire life, I knew nothing about public school life, let alone college life. Everything about college was completely new to me, like having to walk from class to class or making sure that I was on time. There were many aspects of college life that I had to adjust to during this new transition in my life. In the transition from homeschool into college, I encountered many difficulties trying to overcome new challenges inside and outside of the classroom while, at the same time, trying to adjust to an unfamiliar environment.
This course is in its twilight, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you right before the screen goes down.
Learning that having good time management skills has shown me that I can take my time and accomplish more. When relating this to school, I can honestly say that starting early is the best gift that I can give myself. As a full-time student with a family and a full-time job, my time is a limited resource (Britton & Tesser, 1991 pg.405). When I start early on an assignment, I don't have to rush and if I mess up, I can start over or seek help if necessary. My work schedule doesn’t always agree with my school schedule but for the most part, I try to have all of my school work completed by Thursday. As I'm approaching the last week in this class, I have began to look over the discussion posts first and then I look over the complete section to familiarize myself with the material before I even go to the read section (Chambers, 2015 pg.4). I found that to be especially helpful when I first began this class because the things that I already knew or felt like I knew, I went ahead and did it.
When it comes to our personal and professional lives, Managing your time efficiently should be a mastered ability. As a student, this could have a huge effect on performance and grades. Seeing that Time Management is imperative when it comes to college and success, recognizing bad habits, should be one of the first obstructions immediately eliminated from your daily schedule. Create new habits if you tend to procrastinate and start planning ahead to manage your most important priorities. According to David Allen (2001),"Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" (p.59) "changes in the way you clarify and organize all things that command your attention-could represent a significant shift in how you approach some key aspects of your day to day work." Setting up deadlines and completing your assignments a few days before the due date will eliminate the procrastination stage. Creating a list with the most important priorities first, will help sort out your assignments and eliminate stress and feeling overwhelmed.
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.
The very first chapter that we read in this class was why go to college. Many students answer with to make more money but this chapter tells you many reasons why it Is good to go to college like it makes you more marketable professionally, you learn how to accumulate knowledge and you even grow intellectually etc. This class really helped me know what to expect out of the first semester and gave me good tips and advice in how to be successful from the beginning. This class was like a guide on what to do instead on just trying to figure out what to do on our own we basically had a guide to follow. Dr. Bennett helped us out a lot. When we first had a test in sociology he gave us tips to help us study. He even took a class period to help us study as a class we broke into groups and had study groups. While in this class I learned to be realistic about the goals that we set. The book that we read in class Your College Experience, gave great tips about everything from paying for schooling to what to expect. When I came to Orientation I realized I was an emerging scholar at the time I had no idea what it meant. I soon realized that this was a great program to be a part of. This program is for undecided freshmen and they are there to help you, be a friend and make your transition easier. My mentors Ruben and Lily were very helpful especially Ruben. They reached out to us before we even came to school which I only realized after I got here because I didn’t check my emails. They were there to help us find our way in college. They made us feel welcomed and gave you a friend. They made it easy for you to talk to them and help. When me and Lexi reached out to Ruben to help us study for our first sociology exam, he made time to help us study even when he had to study for his own exam. He gave us tips on how to understand the material
I can do better with working on homework right away instead of delaying it. During the past semester If I got an assignment that was due in a week I would quite often procrastinate till the last moment to get it done. I can work on this by not procrastinating as much and by finding ways to encourage myself to do it sooner rather than later.
We learned about money management and time management, smarter reading and note-taking, working in groups, using available resources effectively, making plans for life and of course, being happy. I found those extremely useful. They are not only for this class, but also for a working environment, for our daily life. One of my weakness is procrastination, which is the biggest challenge for me to achieve my goals. From the beginning of this quarter, I set up an daily agenda, and I had been using it for the whole quarter! It is amazing for me to get in the habit of making agenda and do work according to it. Time blocking, another strategy presented in class is useful, which reduces my
Over the course of my Becoming a Scholar course project, I was opened up to a whole new group of experiences and lessons that I never thought I would. When we first started this class at the beginning of the semester, I didn’t have many expectations. Sure, this was a course designed to help guide and prepare us first years for the rest of our college experience, but with my high school background, I didn’t think much of it. In high school, I was one of the students that had course work and homework come naturally to me. I always did well in my classes and had outstanding marks. So when I was told that I had to take a mandatory classes with all my fellow first year students, I immediately wrote it off. Because of this, I didn’t really expect
Procrastination has always affected many people’s lives and how they go through school. Even if after school activities get in the way, asking family members to help out with homework and studying will hopefully help out for the next week or so. Procrastination should be handled more easily because I feel as if people in middle school and high school aren’t managing their time well, which is why they don’t get work done, they sleep late, and they wake up late and become tardy for school. Those students who have trouble with learning how to manage their time should try to make a schedule and plan things out. (Just stay off phones as much as possible because that has helped
