There’s been a great debate whether student athletes should or should not be paid while they are in school. Many believe no, because they receive a college education for free that includes tuition, room and board, and other allowable expenses. Others say yes, because they are the reason for the NCAA billion-dollar industry. Yes, a billion-dollar industry that includes ticket and jersey sales, video game sales, television revenue and other sources of income that goes to the NCAA, the schools, the coaches, the event staff and everyone else involved in the business except for the athletes creating the profit. The majority of the football and basketball players in college are African Americans kids that come from poverty stricken communities. Growing up playing sports, a lot of these kids dream big that they can make it to the NBA or the NFL and become rich to take care of their families. These are their pipe dreams of getting out of their drug infested and high crime rate communities. Going to college helps a lot; but not always, because every kid will not make it to the big leagues. Some kids even take money from agents or boosters which is a NCAA violation. These kids risk their college education because they need the money to live. It can open the door for a bright future. Student debt in America has been growing and has impacted the lives of many who cannot afford to pay back their loans. This has affected their chances for a good credit score where buying a house or a car would be difficult. Having a free education can setup a better future than others who have to take out student loan. In an interview with CNBC, Mark Emmert, the president of the NCAA said, "We want to make sure they get degrees, and that they really have the education that sets them up for life(NCAAPrez)." Having a degree in a field is sometime a hit or a miss. You can receive a degree and still not get that dream job. There are people who have degrees that work different fields then their degree major thanks to the poor job market. But what does that have to do with not paying these student athletes. They are still out there preforming for them and making them a boat load of money. Even if the NCAA think it is not a good idea to pay them, why should they have to hold them back from receiving gifts or making money from autographs to take care of themselves. Nobody comes to see the NCAA president or executives at these games. Top NCAA executives are getting $1 million per year while an athlete cannot even earn $50 from signing a few autographs.
