Children and teens face quite a strain on their social lives to partake in activities with drugs alcohol and illegal activities. Tensions in sporting events run high and the type of kid that is going to excel is the one with perseverance to do so. There is something about an athlete-The drive, the desire, the will to win- that. Gives them that determination to be the best they can be. Athletes are representing themselves, their schools and their teams every time they step onto the field, court or mat. The pressure is on to be the best of the best and to give 110%. When young athletes learn how to respect themselves coaches and the sports they play, they begin a better life. It does not matter the competition is always there. But, the competition isn't just on when it comes to sports. Athletes are also in a race against time. According to an interview of A high school student athlete at Riverdale high school, high school sports teach lessons that will be helpful in adulthood. Time management is extremely important as a student-but a student athlete has much more to fit into their schedule. According to a poll done in the Los Angeles times, students, have on average three and a half hours of homework per day, and that is not including kids in honors class. That is up to four and a half hours of homework- a night. Athletes are usually working in practice for at least 2 hours a day, and on game days, have games sometimes five hours long. That being said, kids need to manage their time in order to do what needs to be done on a day to day basis. Kids also need to manage their time in college in order to excel and better their careers and futures. Athletes that spend years in high school managing to get up to four and a half hours of homework done, and practice for 2 hours; and still find time to pack clothes and uniforms for the next day, shower, eat, and pack their school things, without a doubt know how to manage their …show more content…

Kis would never be able to handle hours of practice and homework if they did not have the will to work hard. It takes dedication for kids to want to get their work done while having hours of practice. Schools and coaches have rules about kids failing classes and that is usually not tolerated. When the kids are instructed and directed towards getting good grades by coaches in order to ensure playing time, they use their hard work to manage their time and that hard work adheres during the transition into the real world. Drugs and alcohol are epidemics in the lives of high school teenagers. It seems to be as if the mainstream thing to do is get drunk every weekend or smoke on a regular basis. According to the NCAA 22% of athletes claim to have use marijuana in the past year but 33% of college students and general claim to have you as marijuana in the past year. That is a 10% decrease of recreational drug use in college
