Children and teens face quite a strain on their social lives to partake in activities with drugs alcohol and illegal activities. Tensions in sporting events run high and the type of kid that is going to excel is the one with perseverance to do so. There is something about an athlete-The drive, the desire, the will to win- that. Gives them that determination to be the best they can be. Athletes are representing themselves, their schools and their teams every time they step onto the field, court or mat. The pressure is on to be the best of the best and to give 110%. It does not matter the competition is always there. But, the competition isn't just on when it comes to sports. Athletes are also in a race against time. According to an interview of A high school student athlete at Riverdale high school, high school sports teach lessons that will be helpful in adulthood. Time management is extremely important as a student-but a student athlete has much more to fit into their schedule. According to a poll done in the Los Angeles times, students, have on average three and a half hours of homework per day, and that is not including kids in honors class. That is up to four and a half hours of homework- a night. Athletes are usually working in practice for at least 2 hours a day, and on game days, have games sometimes five hours long. That being said, kids need to manage their time in order to do what needs to be done on a day to day basis. Kids also need to manage their time in college in order to excel and better their careers and futures. Kis would never be able to handle hours of practice and homework if they did not have the will to work hard. It takes dedication for kids to want to get their work done while having hours of practice. Schools and coaches have rules about kids failing classes and that is usually not tolerated. When the kids are instructed and directed towards getting good grades by coaches in order to ensure playing time, they use their hard work to manage their time and that hard work adheres during the transition into the real world. Drugs and alcohol are epidemics in the lives of high school teenagers. It seems to be as if the mainstream thing to do is get drunk every weekend or smoke on a regular basis. According to the NCAA 22% of athletes claim to have use marijuana in the past year but 33% of college students and general claim to have you as marijuana in the past year. That is a 10% decrease of recreational drug use in college
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.
Youth sports can be a learning experience or it can be a health risk to the athletes. Youth sports can teach young children the value of hard work and discipline or it can be emotionally and physically damaging. Three main points are how sports keep you healthy, how they build character, and the values that they will learn from sports and how they will use in the future. These three ideas prove that youth sports can be healthy, they build character, and can teach them the value of hard work and discipline for your kid.
Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.
Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
All schools require students to maintain a certain minimum GPA, attendance, and discipline standards in order to be permitted to continue practicing and playing with the team. Coaches push the point that school comes before the sport. Although it takes self-control to finish things on time during sports, a student who doesn’t do homework during their season most likely doesn’t do it the rest of the year either while they don’t have a sport. Whereas a student who cares about their grades and regularly does their homework and focuses in class will continue to do just that no matter their extracurricular activities during the season. One of the lessons I've learned from playing a sport is how to manage my time and keep an organized environment. In my opinion nothing could have given me the same motivation to figure this out besides wanting to do well while playing soccer. According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease of grades in school. A parent putting his/her child in sports gives the child something to do and keeps them fit. Parents also put their child in a sport hoping that he/she will get success out of it “Eager to nurture the next A-Rod or Michelle Kwan, parents enroll their 5- or 6-year-olds in a competitive sports league or program” (Stenson). While not all parents are pushing for future Olympians, the fight for a sports college scholarship is competitive and parents may feel that their child will have a better chance of gaining one if he/she starts competitive sports early. Parents push their children to succeed, and children--not wanting to disappoint their parents--push themselves, sometimes harder than they should. If done right, pushing a child into sports can have a positive effect on the child’s interaction with other children while teaching them commitment and healthy competition. Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
... conclusion, looking back at the evolution of sports, it has gone from a group of athletes that played a game they loved whole heartedly, to a group of athletes that play a game basically for greed; gone from a group working together and using their experiences to help others, to seeing how good they can make themselves look. Fans have suffered through players’ strikes so they can make more money. They have started using “performance enhancing drugs” to get bigger muscles so they can out do their own teammates. Sports reports talk about how an individual won the game rather than the team winning the game. Integrity and teamwork need to start at the high school level of sports so these young athletes will know how it feels to work together as a whole. It will benefit them in all aspects of their lives, from school to family and that is something to be proud of.

The player’s legs are in severe pain, and he is out of breath, yet he continues to run, utilizing every last portion of energy that he maintains. He desires to better himself, not necessarily for his own benefit, but for the benefit of his team. He knows that every single member of the team, including himself, must work as hard as they possibly can on the court to reach their potential and achieve success. Organized sports teach athletes some of the most powerful moral values and life lessons that any individual can attain. Despite the opposing opinion that students who take part in organized sports suffer academically due to time deprivation and focus misdirected away from the classroom, involvement in sports teaches young men and women to maintain imperative values, such as hard work, selflessness, and commitment, which ultimately improves student-athletes’ academic performance.
The involvement in team sports builds good character and social development skills in children. According to LHSAA executive director, Kenny Henderson “Children who participate in sports have heightened self-esteem, social skills, ability to work well with others and more respect.” Young adults who have played team sports are less likely to take illegal drugs. Adults who played sports as children have better social and leadership skills. Sports provide children with experiences and interactions necessary to grow into an adult with good character and sufficient social skills. Team sports in grade school can offer children and teenager an outlet for stress and negative emotional build-up. Coaches, practices, games or meets and traveling all have a large impact on a person’s charter. Most children who have played a team sport at some time have character traits found in highly successful adults.
At some point students has had trouble either at home or at school and need to release stress or tension. Some of these times the teens choose to do activities that are wrong. Youth want to feel comfort and accepted, therefore they sometimes will do events that are not well for their body just to fit in with a group. There is evidence that proves sports can reduce the likeliness of teens committing crimes, or getting into trouble. Tees look at the negative substances such as drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and think that they can do whatever they want. Many teens look at these activities and think they are “exciting” or “cool” and want to try them, but if they are busy with sports they most likely will not be as easily influenced. Participation in sports helps keep teens out of trouble by taking up their free time which could be used for mischief, gives them an opportunity to meet new friends for positive role models, provides teens an outlet to develop a higher self-esteem, and also enables student to set goals for on and off the field.
Many life lessons can be taught through sports. Children can learn the importance of work ethic, working with others, perseverance, and the list goes on. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning. It is a sad when parents turn a great beneficial thing into something that can be harmful for their children.
