Strategic Imperatives Children’s National Medical Center located in Washington D.C. is the sole provider of pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area, it is the only freestanding children’s hospital between Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Norfolk and Atlanta (Children’s National, 2010). Children’s National’s ability to introduce the Wellness Program and also seek to improve the organization’s customer service rating has great strategic importance. The hospital is unique in that the physicians give feedback to patients and their parents/legal guidance on a consistent basis to ensure that optimum care is provided pertaining to the overall health of the patient. Children’s National also partnered with some local pharmacy companies. This was a great strategic opportunity in that the hospital now has a wide variety of products being offered. This new partnership has afforded the hospital to offer state of the art products to the patients. Children’s National cares for more than 360,000 patients very year (National Children’s, 2010) from around the world. In the District of Columbia, Children’s National is the largest non-governmental hospital for pediatric care, it provides more than $50 million in uncompensated care (Children’s National, 2010). The hospital is the regional referral center for pediatric emergency, trauma, cancer, cardiac, critical care, neonatology, orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery (Children’s National, 2010). Internal Environment The health care system is plagued with many problems and one of the most prevalent problems is staff shortages coupled with decrease in medical and financial resources (Swayne, Duncan & Ginter, 2008), Children’s... ... middle of paper ... ...o units; one for international patients and the other a Hematology and Oncology unit. Each unit is furnished with state of the art equipments; each room is equipped with two flat screen televisions, a refrigerator, safe and DVD player and each floor has a laundry room and Family room and a library. It is no wonder that Children’s National has been ranked consistently among the best pediatric hospital in America by US News & World Report and Leapfrog Group (Children’s National, 2010). Background Information In implementing a strategic plan for Coastal Medical Center, our consulting team has conducted many analyses and formed numerous strategies in order for Coastal Medical Center to be successful. Such assessments include an internal analysis, external analysis, gap analysis, and SWOT analysis. In conducting these analyses, our consulting team was able to better understand the internal environment, external environment, where the organization currently stands in terms of performance, and the major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that oppose the Coastal Medical Center. From our inquiry, we will be able to establish a strategic plan that best fits the organization’s needs.
There are three locations at Lurie’s Children’s, Comer Children’s and at Edward’s Hospital these are an area located in the pediatric units for families that have children and newborns are receiving treatment at the
After analyzing the Coastal Medical Center, it is apparent that the employees and staff have no conception of the mission, vision, and values of this health care facility. In addition to this lack of structure, CMC has many projects in the midst of production that lack support of a common goal, employees are unsatisfied with their jobs, the two boards lack ability to agree on strategic decisions for the organization,, and the medical center has a dismal reputation when it comes to quality care.

Pediatric nurses do a lot of the same tasks as a regular nurse. They draw blood, check vital signs, can perform physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests. However, the job of a pediatric nurse goes beyond regular nurses. They must have a caring relationship not only with the patient they are tending to, but also the patient’s family. Parents usually prefer a pediatric nurse over a regular nurse due to the caring relationship they carry. This is well known by the nurses as the caring process. During this process the nurse must help the child and the child’s family step by step with anything they may need at the time. The pediatric nurse provides support, care, and information on how to prevent future problems. Pediatric nursing can be defined as “the practice of nursing with children, youth, and their families across the health continuum, including health promotion, illness management, and health restoration" (Barnsteiner et al). Therefore, you can see from that statement alone there is more than one job to be done by a pediatric nurse. A pediatric nurse can see anywhere from 80 to 100 children a day. They take appointments, walk-ins, and sometimes make home visits. Only when the pediatric nurse finds an abnormality will they refer and send the child t...

As a pediatric hospitalist, there are a wide range of duties that must be completed for the safety and well-being of one’s patients. A duty amongst all physicians is caring for a patient’s illnesses. As a pediatrician, one must be involved in the physical, mental, and emotional upbringing of adolescents throughout every stage of development in good health as well as in illness. A pediatrician takes care of a child from a few weeks after birth to the age of twenty-one when the patient transfers to a new physician. The duties designated to all pediatricians is to reduce infant and child mortality rates, control diseases, make sure patients lead well-maintained lifestyles, and make easier the lives of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Becoming a pediatrician would improve the lives of many children.
Home health care services are not just for elderly patients. In some cases, a family may seek professional assistance for a child that is living with a chronic condition or recovering from an operation. To further support these families and ensure that top quality care is available for all, ACCESS Nursing Services is expanding its pediatric care division in New York, NY, with the hiring of additional physical therapists.
Thousands of nurses throughout the nation are exhausted and overwhelmed due to their heavy workload. The administrators do not staff the units properly; therefore, they give each nurse more patients to care for to compensate for the lack of staff. There are several reasons to why
Since the 1990’s, the interest in nursing and the profession as a whole has decreased dramatically and is still expected to do so over the next 10-15 years according to some researchers. With this nursing shortage, many factors are affected. Organizations have to face challenges of low staffing, higher costs for resources, recruiting and reserving of registered nurses, among liability issues as well. Some of the main issues arising from this nurse shortage are the impact of quality and continuity of care, organizational costs, the effect it has on nursing staff, and etc. However, this not only affects an organization and community, but affects the nurses the same. Nurses are becoming overwhelmed and are questioning the quality of care that each patient deserves. This shortage is not an issue that is to be taken lightly. The repercussions that are faced by both nurses and the organization are critical. Therefore, state funding should be implemented to private hospitals in order to resolve the shortage of nurses. State funds will therefore, relieve the overwhelming burdens on the staff, provide a safe and stress free environment for the patient, and allow appropriate funds needed to keep the facility and organization operational.
The region’s labor market is already tightening, as a result of which competition for skilled healthcare professionals is increasing. Kaiser Permanente would have to compete with the existing hospitals in recruiting and retaining qualified management and staff personnel responsible for the day-to-day operations of each of its hospitals and physician practices, including nurses and other non-physician healthcare professionals. The scarcity of nurses and other medical support personnel in the region presents a significant operating issue. This shortage may require Kaiser Permanente to enhance wages and benefits to recruit and retain nurses and other medical support personnel, recruit personnel from foreign countries, and hire more expensive temporary personnel. Competition for skilled healthcare professionals may lead to a further increase in Kaiser Permanente’s wage
Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) centers were specifically designed to decrease health care costs by delivering cost effective health services for chronic conditions in children, thereby reducing frequent hospitalizations. Parents who enroll their children in PPECs not only expect their child’s medical needs to be taken care of, but they also expect that the PPEC functions as a regular daycare and in turn advances their child’s academic and social performance. Hence, the expectation placed on PPECs is double of that of a regular daycare. Due to their medical centered nature, PPECs require nurses who can respond to each child’s individual needs in addition to medical emergencies. PATCHES Inc., a PPEC, offers medical treatment, therapy, and education to children with complex medical conditions. However, given that PATCHES is functioning within a system with severe resource limitations, it should be noted that
Children requiring emergency care have unique needs, especially when emergencies are serious or life threatening. Therefore, it is imperative that all hospitals have the appropriate resources and staff to provide effective emergency care for children. This paper outlines resources necessary to ensure that a hospital unit is prepared for an emergency situation involving pediatric patients. The pediatric rapid response team guidelines are consistent with the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine’s report on the future of emergency care in the United States health system. Adoption of a pediatric rapid response team should facilitate the delivery of emergency care for children of all ages and, when appropriate, timely transfer to a facility with specialized pediatric services.
Hence, we provide specific care to each child keeping in mind their medical status in order to ensure optimal outcome. Every day, physicians called pediatricians are helping and treating children’s illnesses and making sure they are healthy. Dr. Ananya Mandel describes pediatrics “as the branch of medicine dealing with the health and medical care of infants, children and adolescents from birth up to the age of 18” (Ananya l). Pediatricians work with children and care about their health. Without pediatricians, children wouldn’t receive special treatment, which is highly necessary since caring for children’s health is not the same as adult care. Although being a pediatrician is very time consuming and can be emotional, it is a rewarding and interesting career.
