In 2009, Steven Brill publish and article that overall helped the common everyday person to take notice to the corruption that education school systems poses. He published the article “The Rubber Room”. The article was published by The New Yorker and was electronically available on August 31, 2009. When this work came out Steven Brill raised a lot of eyebrows. He gave people insight as to what they education system really does and how all its branches work. Steven brill has a close relationship with education based on his prior observation in the rubber rooms. He started his work by visiting these rubber rooms. In Goldstein’s argument, she believes that environmental factors are one of the biggest leading causes to a server problem. She argues that the children who face poverty in their life and children who face harsh environmental factors in result perform poorly in an educational environment. Goldstein claims that “family poverty exerts a crushing influence over children’s lives”. With this being she thinks that you can have the best teachers out there but if your outside life is degrading it will overall impact the success a child has in a classroom. She states a claim that back up this inference, stating “no matter how great the teachers are” the outside factors always outweigh a classroom setting This tells us that in her eyes the biggest cause come from outside factors and if you do not have a strong support system at home you will be unlikely to success academically. When focusing on Brill’s argument, he takes upon a different view as to what the biggest problems derive from. As previously stated Goldstein thinks environmental factors are the biggest leading problem, where Brill believes that teachers are overall the leading cause to educational problems. Brill claims that teachers unions, tenure, and seniority rank highly on the list of educational problems. Brill explains teachers unions as being a protection plan for teachers against “political patronage” (Bril). This leads us to seniority rank, when you reach your third year and first day you have accomplished tenure. Once you reach this point teachers become stagnant. Most teachers coast along because they are guaranteed a job. This leaves the children’s education up in the air and leave little to no improvement in the curriculum or test scores. The author states in “A New Deal for Teachers” that in America, especially in poorer school districts, teacher quality is lacking. In urban districts, out of the new teachers hired in the next three years, about half of them will quit (usually the quality ones). Placing fault on teachers is inaccurate because not all teachers are to blame. There are teachers who push students to reach for their goals and to attend college so they can get a prominent job that makes them happy. Because a student fails, does not always mean it is because the teacher did not teach it well enough. It is possible that the student did not want to pursue further or rebelled against the teacher. With the low expectations of teachers, students are limited in their ability to learn. As discussed before, it is difficult to predict how well a teacher will do at their job before they begin working. This creates doubt when hiring anyone, and employers may not know if who they are hiring is the right choice. If teachers are judged by not only the basic requirements met, but also their interpersonal skills and how well they are able to teach in a positive manner, there will hopefully be less mediocre teachers hired. In the same way, both an advanced teacher and an average teacher are paid the same wages, which creates a flaw in education. Even more, there should not be average teachers in the workforce if all teachers are paid the same. Though this harms the advanced teachers, who deserve more than they earn, it also harms the students, as they are taught at a lower level by the inadequate teachers. In the text, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, author Diane Ravitch explores her ideological shift on school reform and the empirical evidence that caused this shift. Once a proponent and contributor of testing, accountability, choice, and market reforms, Ravitch’s support began to diminish as she realized that these current reforms were not viable options. She came to realize that the new school reforms focused entirely on structural and managerial adjustments and that no focus was given to actual learning.
Teachers themselves are often left to make the best of what little they have to work with. A narrow curriculum with little for scholars to decide themselves leaves them feeling like completing cookie-cutter worksheets is boring and pointless. Over time, students begin to hold educators with contempt and become disgusted by school and the tedious, rote labor that comes with it. With no enthusiasm, defeated students scores plummet and the faculty in turn can develop a bad attitude about students. The worst part is this combination produces a negative loop that often only spirals further downward.
O’Rourke’s article on Weekly Standard is an older critique of the public high school system in America. He is a contributing editor to Weekly Standard and also works with the Cato Institute. O’Rourke’s main point in the article is that the public school system needs to be shut down and ended due to high spending per pupil and no noticeable increase in test scores. In “End Them, Don’t Mend Them,” published on Weekly Standard in June of 2010, P.J. O’Rourke argues against the public school system by citing evidence of increased spending per student across the nation, insignificant gains on standardized test scores, and pointing out that there is no correlation in spending and testing. O’Rourke appeals to the logos and ethos of the reader but fails to appeal to the pathos by building a clear bias and agenda in his essay.

An interview with a teacher from this school district expresses the disappointment the teachers have in the new system. “The students that struggle the entire year, the ones that fail every test, are still forced to move to the next grade level. They aren’t gaining the knowledge they need to move on and grow” states the concerned fifth grade elementary teacher. She continues to explain the stress teachers feel when they are pushing students further than their potential. Students are becoming less aware of the world around them; they don’t develop the knowledge they need to succeed. With such absence of knowledge, naïve citizens are allowing government control over their thoughts. A clear example of this is when teachers are pushing these students from grade to grade, they are simply only learning what the government and school districts want them to learn. This, in turn, affects our future leaders due to our democratic republican way of electing officials. In his piece titled Idiot Nation, Michael Moore depicts many faults of the American education system. One quote that caught my attention was “teachers are politician’s favorite punching bags” (pg. 160). Teachers in the public school system are grouped together as the number one predicament when it comes to America’s lack of worldly knowledge. He goes on to discuss the much more egregious and omnipresent issues. I enjoyed Moore’s counter arguments, because I have always disagreed with this myth without knowing the actual problems in our schools.

He then attempts to use this association to justify reforming the educational system, yet abstains from actually describing any practical elements of this revamp. While some of the points he makes pose valid concerns, the way in which he presents his views is neither empirically sound nor logically consistent. If he—or anyone—feels the need to make blanket statements criticizing a particular occupation, those critiques must be airtight and constructive before presentation, else the message may get lost and people could become offended by what they feel are false accusations. Professor Gutting, in trying to shine light on and provide counsel for what he sees as a pressing issue, did not achieve that standard.
The article titled “Order in the Classroom” goes in depth into the education system; its flaws, strengths, and what needs mending. Author Neil Postman, an educator of New York University includes his perspective on the education system. One remark by contributor William O’Connor, explains that the education in our schools is not inferior, the schools have been getting inferior students (Postman, 309). The students are not inferior in our education system. If we were to look in depth at some of the issues we hold, maybe that mindset would change. What makes us inferior is the fact that we do not teach our children things they need to know before beginning school, we have a horribly structured school day, we believe that socioeconomic status will change a student’s learning and ability and we believe in punishing students who cause disturbances. These are all very low and hurtful perspectives to hold when discussing education.

Research has shown that teachers often work in an isolated setting in which they are considered experts in their specific area; however they often lack the support and equipment needed to do their jobs effectively. As a result, to the inadequate working environment new teachers often leave the profession within the first five years.
