The way women dress has an impact on how they are viewed or labeled in society. Whether we are at school, work, or the mall, we are judged just of our appearance. In our society we are very quick to judge because the “outside” denies people to know a person from the “inside”. Identity, clothing, and generation have a major influence on how women are judged in society.
First, clothing plays a role in how woman live their lives. We are judged on how we present ourselves on certain occasions or in a setting where we are being judged on the color we wear. (Source) In addition, clothing can emotionally affect a person, by saying “you are what you wear”. Identity can have a set of multiple definitions based of the society women live in. To understand the term identity has resulted in people possessing multiple identities. There are three bases of identity: role, personal, and social. (Source) Women can have different identities based of their society such as being a mother, daughter, wife, mentor and more. Women identities and roles cannot be understood by others outside of their society. For example, women who wear decent clothes at work will be associated with positive beliefs, such as being hard working, trustworthy, focused and honest.
Fashion is viewed by some as immoral, wasteful, or immoderate, while others have a passion for fashion and describe themselves as enthusiastic for fashion. Modern society is typically split into a strict gender dichotomy of males and females. Each gender has a set of socially constructed roles and stereotypes that determine how each individual is viewed and treated in society. As I have progressed through school, I have noticed that expectations for females differed from their male counterparts. In school and at home, girls are typically expected to be more well-behaved and studious than boys. Since girls are beginning to attend college more than boys, society expects more girls than boys to pursue a college education. I have probably internalized these expectations and inadvertently used them as motivation for success. In some ways, my gender has also put me at a disadvantage in school. Fashion in the 21th century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Fashion has for the past century been, and is still today, used as an indicator of social change and progress, as it changes with the social norms of the society and the political changes of the world (Finkelstein 3).
In relation to my work, the rationing of clothes during the second world war influenced the fashion of the working-class women as it became harder to find materials to make outfits, which then bought on the problem of too little material. The women working in the factories wore simple clothings such as overalls for the mere fact that it was comfortable, cheap, quick and easy to wear. The women carried large appropriate handbags to keep tools, rationing books and their essentials.

For example, if people saw me wear Concords, they would categorize me as being into basketball or hip hop. It is also mostly guys who are wearing basketball shoes that notice my shoes. Therefore, it makes me feel masculine and makes me feel like I belong to the basketball or hip hop culture, but at the same time, I feel like I do not belong to a certain group. Thus, fashion is different in ethnics group, gender, and class because it serves to unite people or to establish a separation from other groups. Women are constantly obsessing over the way that they look and if it is deemed as attractive. Women feel the need to wear makeup, dress feminine, have no body hair, (etc.) in order to be deemed as visually presentable or desirable. These beauty standards go beyond the desire to please the eyes of a man or to correlate with the right sexuality that women should have. Why is it that people stereotype males and females no matter what nationality they are? Because we are all the same in the end but the media makes many people think differently. The general public thinks that all females like doing their hair, makeup, dolls and love light colors like color pink. Education based on women’s clothing Clothing to a lot of people is a a way to show other who they are and what they make of themselves and how they show that they are comfortable with their body no matter how badly others try to shame them for what they decide to wear in public. In elementary school one of the most common phrase used was, “You can’t do that you're a girl.” Society puts gender stereotypes and expectations on children at a very young age. I never really understood these stereotypes and expectations until later in my life. I couldn’t figure out why it was that boys were not allowed to like the color pink, and if the girls wanted to play “boy” sports it was seen as unusual. My family consists of my parents, my sister and I; so I never had sibling of the opposite gender in my life. I didn’t have someone to compare gender differences with. I was given toys no matter what gender they were geared towards. I remember receiving hot wheels cars and baby dolls the same year for Christmas and never thought anything thing of it. I think that these experiences has really shaped who I am today.
Fashion is a controversial issue in society nowadays. We live in a consumerism advanced era in which whether following fashion trends or not has become a debatable point. Many people believe that it is important to follow fashion trends. For example, Lord Chesterfield once said, “If you are not in fashion, you are nobody.” The question is why fashion should be an essential matter of concern to all of us.
