"We need to reshape our own perception of how we view ourselves. We have to step up as women and take the lead." This quote was said by popular R&B singer and feminist, Beyoncé. This statement is truly inspiring and all women should have positive views on themselves but the media we see in our day to day lives does not support women in their journey to loving themselves. In movies, malls, magazines, etc. it is easy to point out the stereotypes of what a woman should be; sexy, pure, thin. It seems as if these mainstream medias miss the meaning of what being a woman is really about. Mike Jefferies, CEO of Abercrombie and fitch states that their clothing is for “people with washboard stomachs who look like they’re about to jump on a surfboard”. Since Abercrombie clothing is only directed to the so called ‘cool kids’ so their sizes range from 00 to only a size 12 (remembering that 30% of Canadian women are size 14 plus). This media sends out a dangerous message to young women by making them believe that they do not fit the specific beauty standard to be considered ‘cool’ just because they cannot fit into a brands clothing. This type of discrimination does not just happen in Abercrombie and Fitch; it also happens in stores like Brandy Melville. They are notorious for the ‘one size fits all’ rubbish. Every women’s body is different and if you do not fit that one size what does that make you? This sends a horrible message out to women, Brandy Melville is basically saying that if a woman does not have the specific body type to be able to fit into their clothes, you are irrelevant. Carla Rice and Margret Hobbs state that “culture values and devalues our physical features, sizes, and capacities has a significant impact on our sense of body and self”. Looking at his from popular clothing brands in the media, they are trying to devalue women who do not fit their beauty
