Some childhood movies and television shows have multiple stereotypes, but being young we don’t really notice what is happening or being said, even when things are being put into our mind by seeing the things certain main characters do in the show that is being watched, whether it is a boy or girl that the child is focusing on, certain stereotypes are being put in their mind without even realizing it. In the television series,” Scooby Doo: Where Are You” it shows two females known as Velma and Daphne, Daphne being the more beautiful character, having bright red hair, a skinny waist and a good body type, while Velma was the type that is portrayed to be more of the ugly girl, being short and more on the heavier side, wearing thick round glasses,

Have you ever made an assumption about someone due to a stereotype? In the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders by S.E Hinton and the short story “Geeks Bearing Gifts” by Ron Koertge, stereotypes often come up. In The Outsiders, the town that the main character, Ponyboy, lives in is separated into two rival sides. The rich and wild Socials, or Socs, and the poor outcasts, the Greasers. The characters are defined by what side of town they live in. In “Geeks Bearing Gifts”, Renee’s school is separated the same way, with the preppy and popular students, and those who are labeled ‘outcasts’. Native Americans have been mistreated and taken advantage of as time went on in United States history. I remember when I was a kid sitting down eating my Cheetos watching Peter Pan and Pocahontas singing along to all of the songs in the movie. Since taking diversity classes in high school, I rewatched those movies and realized how awful they make Native Americans look and act. It’s been throughout the whole United States history that we have treated them unfairly from the Dawes act, stealing their land, and the way we use them in movies. We have falsely portrayed their views for our entertainment, which is wrong. The two Disney films that I decided to watch and research are Robin Hood from 1973 and Toy Story 3 from 2010. I decided to choose these movies because they both have a good amount of action and adventure in them, which is what I like best in movies. Stereotypes are very common in todays’s society according to Robert Sapolsky who states, “Face it, we all do it—we all believe in stereotypes about minorities. These stereotypes are typically pejorative and false, but every now and then they have a core of truth.”(Sapolsky,1997) The Disney animated films Robin Hood and Toy Story 3 portray many issues and gendered and racial stereotypes that are still present in society today.
The first stereotype I noticed about the show was the way the cartoonist drew the different characters. All of the African-American characters were drawn with enormous lips and huge noses. Meanwhile, the two Caucasian characters in the show were both drawn with wider heads and seemed smarter than the other characters in the show. Also, all the African-American characters talked in a dialect while the Caucasian characters talked slower. In addition, all of the African-American characters all called each other “brotha,” which is another stereotype, because not all African-Americans call each other that or like to be called that.
Many thoughts come into the mind when hearing the word stereotype. The society has been exposed to too many stereotypes. These stereotypes result in controversial issues, which in turn, affect adults and children. The TV shows, internet, and social media are sources that expose children, as well as the adults, to stereotypes. Examples of those stereotypes are religion, sexism, and race. As children grow up by, the age of four they are able to pick up many stereotypes through those sources and without the perception and knowledge these children carry these stereotypes along with them in their long term memory. The Ugly Truth, a film which was released in 2009, displays many particular stereotypes and gender issues which we find within American society. Gender is made up of socially constructed ideas which are reinforced by society in regards to what it means to be masculine or feminine. We first learn gender from our parents; however they too had to first learn it from their families and society. Within the American society, the media takes on a large role in creating gender norms. The media is made up of films, magazines, television programs, and news papers. The Ugly Truth, although a funny film, perpetuates these stereotypes and ideas of gender provided by our society.
A little girl sits on the floor with her gaze fixed on the television screen in front of her, watching magical images dance before her eyes and catchy songs flow through her ears. Even though she had seen it at least twenty times before, she still loved The Little Mermaid just as much as she did the first time she watched it. As she watched it, she longed to be a beautiful mermaid with a curvy body and wonderful singing voice like Ariel. She longed to be saved by the handsome Prince Eric, and fall in love and live happily ever-after like Ariel did. In today’s society, women strive to achieve equality between the sexes. Despite the tremendous steps that have been taken towards reaching gender equality, mainstream media contradicts these accomplishments with stereotypes of women present in Walt Disney movies. These unrealistic stereotypes may be detrimental to children because they grow up with a distorted view of how men and women interact. Disney animated films assign gender roles to characters, and young children should not be exposed to inequality between genders because its effect on their view of what is right and wrong in society is harmful to their future.
Not all African Americans are thugs and people that do not work. A lot of them have successful careers and have put in the time and effort to have good work ethic and be good people. African Americans have had a difficult history in the American film industry. During the early 20th century of filmmaking, blacks were stereotyped as not worthy of being in films, and they were only certain types of characters such as servants, mammies, and butlers. From several decades of filmmaking, African Americans have been sought out to be trouble makers, incapables, intellectually limited, and also lazy. Ageism is all too common in films. While there are still so many movies packed with stereotypes that view aging as negative, there is a recent movie, which portrayed aging positively in some aspects, the movie ‘The Second Best Marigold Hotel’. While this movie does contain stereotypes and humor about aging, it also shows the visitors leading active, happy, free and independent lives. They are not portrayed as being sick or frail, but instead they are embracing life and their experiences regardless of their age.
The film Spy Kids 3: Game Over is about Juni Cortez an “ex-OSS” agent and only takes private detective jobs. President Devlin which is also the head of the OSS tells Juni his older sister Carmen is stuck in a mission and needs his help. Juni, his grandpa and other testing gamers look for his sister, Carmen and defeat the Toymaker. The mission for Carmen and now Juni is to enter the game and get to an unwinnable level and shut off the game to defeat the Toymaker. The film has many stereotypes for women as vulnerable, beautiful, submissive and men as protectors ¬and vulnerable at a women’s request.
While watching movies, have you ever noticed that the villains in almost every single Hollywood film are of Middle Eastern or European descent? In a reoccurring theme of Hollywood, the villains in these films are almost always foreigners or people of color. This is a stereotype. On the other side of the spectrum, we often see that the heroes of these films are most often than not white males. This is another stereotype. Within the last few years, we’ve seen actors such as Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, and Zoe Saldana take the lead roles, so it can’t be said that there are no non-white heroes, but there certainly isn’t many. Hollywood action movies, moreover than other genres, are typically loaded with an abundance of stereotypes. The way these movies are composed and structured can tell us a great deal about the views held within the American psyche and who holds the social power. The harsh reality is that the media ultimately sets the tone for societal standards, moralities, and images of our culture. Many consumers of media have never encountered some of the minorities or people of color shown on screen, so they subsequently depend on the media and wholeheartedly believe that the degrading stereotypes represented on the big screen are based on fact and not fiction. American culture has a variety of stereotypes that “define” our culture. From the stuck up cheerleaders in high school to the working middle class white collared males in an office setting. America perceive different race, ethnicity and even class groups through heavy stereotypes. In the movie Not Another Teen Movie, shows these different stereotypes about high school and teenagers through their groups/class and race. Many teen movies depict the standard high school setting and typically white or suburban high school. These movies tend to go against stereotypes and show a brighter side of high school. For example High School Musical displayed a typically high school love story between to Troy and Gabriella. They were not apart the same “group” in their high school. Troy was a jock and hung out with the popular group of students and Gabriella was a smart and hung out with the more smart and nerdy group of students. In the end true love prevails and bring the two young couple together even though they were from different social groups. In Not Another Teen Movie it shows all the normal stereotypes that are connected with the high school setting such as the jock having a cheerleading as a girlfriend, the horny freshman boys, the different groups with in the high school and the race to be prom queen. This movie is good to show different stereotypes in high schools in America but also it shows how the body and the male gaze is always displayed in this movie also.

Though our world seems to be improving in many ways, it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes.
