Everyone is entitle to their own opinions and beliefs, but in professional environments one's performance might not be respected. I’ve been working in retail since I was 16 years old and I have encounter myself with a lot of disagreements. At one of my most recent jobs my manager was very traditional. He wanted his employees to have the same beliefs as him, due to his religion and where he came from. Wanting us not to be very social with the customers that came in the store. After my first week of working there my manager noticed how talkative, and helpful I was, and called to my attention. He informed me that the reason I was there was to sell clothes, and not to make friends. What he didn’t noticed was that my customer service was highly
appreciated by the customers, and my sales were very high. Great customers service has always been my favorite part about retail, and being unfriendly with customers made me uncomfortable. I decided to follow the rules which made my job boring. After a whole month of following the rules, I decided to speak to my manager on how retail in the United States works, and about everything I learned during my business courses at FIT. After gaining his trust he allowed me to do things the right way, and trained the other employees. A few months later, sales increased and I was promoted.

The general consensus among American citizens is that the retail industry as one of the worst jobs a person can take, just short of fast food and any job that is janitorial. There are many reasons behind this stigma that affects people both in and out of the retail industry. Prejudice is the attitude of conveying negative stereotypes to a particular group, usually known as the out-groups. Usually the stereotypes are generalizations based on superficial opinions, so they have an invalid connotation behind it. The world of today is a relatively primitive one, even with every advancement that humanity has accomplished we remain primitive in this aspect. There has been progress, even as slow in comparison to that of todays, it is progress.The ignorances and other human flaws are still very existent within every society, regardless of the boundaries between them be it geographical or cultural. Stereotypes and misconceptions exist in the modern society. Stereotypes arise when there is a single radical group who are accepted as the representation of their apparent subculture. Then the ignorant and misinformed take these “representatives’” behavior as a generalization of the entire group. While the less common misconception is made by some incomprehensible anomaly where an entire assumption is based around a single social group, that has never even proved to be true. There is a stereotype that is attached with the College educated community, they are believed to be almost guaranteed success. The fact that they have a degree in their respective field has built a stereotype of the “successful ones.”
According to the article, “A Risk to Himself: Attitudes Toward Psychiatric Patients and Choice of Psychosocial Strategies Among Nurses in Medical-Surgical Units”, Nurses professional attitudes towards stereotyped psychiatric patients have a major effect on the psychosocial interventions chosen for that patient.” In the article, stereotype is defined as a cognitive element of a strongly held attitude toward a particular social group (Nelson, 2006). Nurses working in different units outside of the psych unit in the hospital are expected to know how to care for psychiatric patients ( Zolneirek, 2009). These nurses base there nursing implications on past personal experience with dealing with other psychiatric patients (MacNeela, Scott, Treacy, & Hyde, 2010). The article elaborates on a research study done by 13 nurses that watch a video of a psychiatric patient with anxiety that was admitted to a med-surgical unit. Research in Nursing and Health, discovered that “Nurses professional attitudes play a key factor in the psychosocial strategies chosen for psychiatric patients”. The two attitudes chosen amongst the nurses in the research study for the psychiatric patient were risk, vulnerability, or both. Depending on the attitude towards the patient, the nurses recommended three psychosocial interventions: Reassurance, encouragement, and structured engagement.

People may feel uncomfortable in the diverse workforce. It is moderately normal for humans to find unfamiliar things uncomfortable at first. Consequently, every individual has their own view of what is comfortable to them. The saying, “the customer is always right” isn’t always necessarily true. Most of the time, the sales associated is correct. However, it is still important to treat costumers with respect, even when they are wrong. Another important skill to have in order to survive retail is to remain patient with costumers. In the modern era, stereotypes seem to be the ways people justify and simplify the society. Actually, “[s]tereotypes are one way in which we ‘define’ the world in order to see it” (Heilbroner 373). People often prejudge people or objects with grouping them into the categories or styles they know, and then treat the types with their experiences or just follow what other people usually do, without truly understand what and why. I was raised by parents who always stressed for us to be respectful and honest people. We were taught the rights and the wrongs of life. We were taught not only to conduct ourselves in this manner at home, but to also carry these beliefs into the work world and the world in general. But, I am aware that I am human and have made mistakes in my life that have questioned my ethics. Then again, there have been many experiences, personal and work related to where I struggled.
