Stephen Spielberg's Raiders Of The List Ark
I this essay I am intending to view a Steven Spielberg film - "Raiders
Of The Lost Ark" and analyse hoe different individuals and social
groups are portrayed. The film is the first in the series of
successful Indiana Jones films where he quests to save the world
against ancient religions and powers. His quest takes him through many
social groups such as Arabs, Napalese Sherpas, Native Indians and
Americans, which I will analyse how they are portrayed.
In this film Spielberg represents men as violent and murderous. He
shows this where Jones shoots the Arab swordsman and shows no regret
and where the Gestapo agent threatens Marian and he is virile. Another
example to enforce the representation is that men - the Gestapo Agent,
Belloq, the Nazis' and Indy are the basis of the story and all of
these male roles all use violence. This is done because men
stereotypically are dominant and violent when sorting problems out.
This is enforced where the men always use violence to solve
situations, for example all the fight scenes. Men are also shown as
hostile and amoral; this is shown when Indy and Belloq are talking in
the bar. He shows these two as hostile because he wants to emphasize
the tension between them and how important the ark is to them both.
Even though Belloq is a mean man who resorts to violence he also
contradicts himself and cares deeply for Marian and doesn't want to
see her killed. Spielberg shows him like this to shows that he to is
human and has all types of feelings like other Nazi agents. Indiana
Jones is shown as violent in the film but not in the same way that the
others are portrayed. He will resort to violence to achieve his goal
(him shooting people and fighting people) but he does this for the
better. He is shown like this because this was the "typical" 1935
character; he will protect the girl at all costs and is the "good
guy".
Though he started out as not a very rich man, Jones became a naval commander for both America and Russia. He was very charming, but he had a horrible temper that tended to get him in trouble. At one point he was in such deep trouble that he was charged with murder, but then acquitted soon after. This is just one of the murders Jones was [allegedly, for the previous one, on account of his acquittal] involved in. The second murder he committed happened on the ship Betsy in the West Indies, where he killed the ringleader of a mutiny with his sword in a dispute over wages.
In the late twentieth century, the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering has positioned itself to become one of the great technological revolutions of human history. Yet, things changed when Herber Boyer, a biochemist at the University of California, founded the company Genentech in 1976 to exploit the commercial potential of his research. Since then the field has exploded into a global amalgam of private research firms developing frivolous, profit-hungry products, such as square trees tailor-made for lumber, without any sort of government regulation.
In one scene, Smith drowns his nephew while he’s taking a bath. In the second scene, Jones plans to drown his nephew while he’s taking a bath, but the child itself slips and hit his head. The nephew ends up drowning without Jones having to kill him. Rachels’ says that the only different between the two scenes were that one did the killing and another letting his nephew die. And that there was no difference between on what Jones and Smith did because they both did wrong.
In the first 20 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey you see a group of monkeys going through evolution. The first change you see is that of a leader. In the beginning, each monkey did their own thing, and was not bound to any organization whatsoever. The monkeys did what they want when they wanted. Then the change begins. A single monkey, by himself, rises to the top of a cliff. He stands and screams. The other monkeys notice him screaming and began dancing and rejoicing. They scream and jump around, in what appears to be reverence for their new leader. Stanley Kubrick shows the change very simply, yet its message is still very clear. The monkeys had never shouted as loud or danced as much as they had previously in the film. Their actions confirm that something in fact had changed.
Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 movie is produced with so much wit, brains, dazzle, and virtuosity that hit me like a bucket of ice-cold water. It made me wonder what was gonna happen next.
The novel, The Call of the Wild, follows a four-year-old mixed Saint Bernard and Scottish shepherd, named Buck. In the beginning of the story, Buck lives in the home of Judge Miller, located at Santa Clara Valley, California. In Santa Clara, Buck lives a luxurious life. At the time of the story, gold is discovered in the North. With this discovery, the value of large dogs like Buck escalated dramatically. The dog’s value was due most to their ability to haul heavy sleds through the abundant snow. Unfortunately, Judge Miller’s servant, Manuel steals Buck to sell him to a band of dog-nappers to pay for his accumulating gambling debts. The ring of thieves that bought Buck is gaining a secure banking by trading the dog to northern executives. Buck, who has had an easy life so far, does not adapt well to the terrain as the other canines do. Buck does not easily tolerate the confinement and mistreatment of his new authority. Buck’s gains the misconception, which then is an aide that any man with a club is a dominator and must be obeyed.
Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757 in the third year of a war in North America over land and territory. Mostly, the war is between the English and the French, but each side has taken up Indian allies to assist them. The main story in the Last of the Mohicans is the love of an adopted Mohican, Hawk-eye, and Cora, the daughter of an English general. There are also other stories embedded in the movie, which are harder to recognize. For instance, a second love story between Hawk-eye's brother and Cora's sister. The life of Magua is another story that the movie seems to slightly touch, but doesn't elaborate on.
... were against gods will and immoral. Jones also abused his followers physically and emotionally. Jones inability to treat his problem affected his capacity to effectively serve his followers and reach the goals he set for his congregation. The most extreme example of unethical behavior is when he issued his followers to kill Congressman Leo Ryan from leaving Jonestown, Guyana in order to prevent some of his followers from leaving and the potential for government interference with his commune. Jones was able to manipulate his followers into believing that his congregation would change the world but his inability to act ethically and effectively led to his downfall.
In “Killing Monsters”, Gerard Jones describes his personal experiences and his work with children to support his claim of violence in media being beneficial to children. He tells of his childhood and how during it, comic characters and violent fantasies helped him deal with his frustrations and problems. He also describes his interactions with different children and how they used violence to empower them and give them strength. Jones uses all this evidence to assert that violence in media helps children in many ways and shouldn’t be criticized the way it is. While I agree with Jones’ claim that violence in the media can be good for children, I think that his evidence is too personal and weak to strongly support an argument.
Witnesses who were at the party shared that Jones was very drunk before he grabbed a gun from his room and opened fire. According to people who were at the party, several guests had attempted to get Jones to stop drinking and go to sleep, something
'Aliens' by James Cameron James Cameron creates atmosphere in a key sequence in ‘Aliens’ using cinematography, editing, sound, special effects and mise-en-scene. The scene opens with one of the protagonists, Corporal Hicks, telling his troops what he managed to ‘salvage from the APC’, this dialogue is of a military style, and emphasizes the professional nature of the characters. This idea of military professionalism is reinforced by the costumes worn by the characters e.g. bullet proof jackets and bullet belts etc, these make the audience feel protected as if they are in ‘safe hands’. Whilst the marines are hunched over a table, the camera is positioned looking over the shoulder of one of them, giving the audience a chance to ‘be there’ with them. This allows the audience to connect with the characters and to feel what they feel.
However, that was definitely not the case. Those who were actually able to escape Jonestown will forever remember it as an image of brutality. Jones’ dictatorship was at its peak. “He still demanded pure loyalty from the congregation, forcing members to prove their loyalty by signing blank pieces of paper, blank power of attorney forms, as well as to actually make false confessions about molesting their children, conspiring to overthrow the U.S. government, and he even went to the length of premeditating framed crimes if a member wanted to leave the settlement” (Long 13). Jones also wanted devotion, so much at he would destroy personal relationships and would terrorize children into turning against their parents (Long 13). Jones also had sexual fantasies and perversions of his own. Both sexes were beaten and coerced into having sex with both Jones and other members, except for their own husbands and wives. They were actually forced to watch their spouses get sexually humiliated and abused (Long
Few movies have been panned by critics but widely accepted by viewers across the nation. National Treasure is one of them. Even after receiving sub par reviews including only two stars from Roger Ebert, National Treasure won over the public, earning almost $350 million worldwide. Even though the movie is under the Walt Disney Company and has a PG rating, this movie is not just for children. Superb acting and action from beginning to end will keep people of all ages glued to their seat as they follow one man’s quest for a hidden treasure.
Buck is my favorite character of the book. He had such a great life before he was
The Ark of the Covenant is one of the most fascinating of all Temple-related subjects. There are many theories about what happened to the Ark of the Covenant, and speculation abounds as to its actual location. Some people think it was taken to the Vatican, together with other Temple vessels, such as those depicted on the Roman monument, the Arch of Titus.
