What is statistics? And why does it matter? Well according to dictionary.com it is, “ the science that deals with the collection, classification, analysis, and interpretation of numerical facts or data, and that, by use of mathematical theories of probability imposes order and regularity on aggregates of more or less disparate elements.” Besides the definition alone showing why statistics matters, some of the things that we do in our careers everyday uses statistics. With my major being Social work which is such a broad field I know that in my future career wherever I end up I will more than likely have to use statistics. Statistics really matters to those social workers in the field of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. First, to even become a clinical social worker one must have a Master’s degree and also have their license, and in the quest to obtaining both you will have to use statistics. However, after you get your degree and once you start working in the field you will still have to use statistics as well. Clinical social workers may run different tests on their clients to help find out what treatments are most useful to them and statistics then comes into play once the tests are done being conducted to help the social …show more content…
For example the social worker could be evaluating abused children that are now living at an alternative house and at the home the children are required to do weekly tests that ask questions concerning how they felt that week and how they are feeling about their life as a whole since moving into the alternative house. At the end of the program the social worker is required to look over the tests and see the average value of the scores as well as the variability of the scores. The variability of the scores would be important because it shows how the program has affected each kid and if it has helped them in
Assessment is a basic skill of generalist social workers. As my current place of employment does not employ any defined assessment, I will utilize information from a generalist text and a sample assessment. The parameters of a generalist assessment are often defined by the specific practise agency (Birkenmaier, Berg-Weger, & Dewees, 2011). The assessment is utilized to identify relevant information such as demographics and the major areas for work such as the client’s goals (Birkenmaier et al., 2011). Many theories such as psychoanalytic or strengths perspective can influence a generalist assessment based on the assessing social worker’s theoretical preference (Birkenmaier et al., 2011). The sample generalist assessment used focuses on the client’s: living skills; health and disability; educationemployment; legal issues; housing; significant relationships; understanding of the issue; demographics; and crisis management (National Council of Social Service, 2006). The social worker has the opportunity to delve further into those areas if deemed necessary by their agency (National Council of Social Service, 2006).
Identify and explain the three major sources of conflict and misinterpretations in social work practice: culture-bound values, class bound values, and language variables.
I think we need to start with discussing what social work is and where it started. Social work, social problems, and the organizations that were developed is an attempt to cope with problems have had almost a parallel history. There are many people who have helped develop more progressive attitudes and programs toward the poor, the mentally ill, the unemployed, and children at risk. Many of the social welfare policies and programs we take for granted occurred quite recently in our history. Social work is an exciting career area that is highly related to psychology. Many individuals earn an undergraduate degree in social work and then go on to their masters. You can do so much with a social work degree. Social worker has a broad range
Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
For example, it explores a range of different issues that this hospital social worker encountered and the demands of their role. This is a strength of this article, because it means the issues raised can be explained in detail and is based on human experience and this could be seen more compelling that quantitative data. Also, in terms of social work practice it could be seen to inspire and generate new ideas. For example, in this article it talks about the pressures of time with patients and how each patient differs. Therefore, this information provided could be seen useful as social workers reading this, may relate to some of the issues and this may motivate them to deal with their issues, and they may take new ideas from this article which can help them within their practice. However, a limitation of this article, is that it is idiographic. As mentioned before it’s based on one individual experience and it could be considered subjective as this narrative may be influenced by personal feelings and opinions and may not reflect a valid account of their day. Therefore, when considering is this article useful, we cannot be one hundred percent sure that all the information provided is genuine. Another, limitation of this article, is due to it being based on one person's experience, there is difficulties in trying to generalize the findings to the wider population. For example, we cannot assume that all hospital social worker’s day looks like this. Also, the article is based on a hospital in Canada (ethnocentric) and so other social worker’s days may be very different, if compared to another hospital outside the USA. Also throughout, the article, there is statistics produced by American associations and this is a limitation because the statistics are only useful for people within the USA or researchers. So overall we can see these limitations can lead to implications in social work practice, as they only
This process recording will reflect an observation that the student social worker discover while working with a client. The student social worker has been visiting with this client for the past seven weeks and has been attempting to establish trust and build rapport with this client to get her to open up more. Specifically, this week the student social worker was successful in executing her strategies to allow the client to feel comfort enough to express her true emotions.
We know where we have been, where we are now and where we need to go - but how do we get there? A map. Theory is a map. It notes any number of known landmarks (previously achieved or applied solutions) and obstacles (issues or problems) and gives us direction so that we are able to navigate intelligently and arrive safely (minimal discomfort to all) at our destination (desired outcome/s).
Knowledge in law, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology just to name a few would then be applied in their work with their clients. Law is an important part of social work practice, it affords a framework which gives social workers powers to take suitable action in making important decisions and preventing anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice. There is also need for statistics when it comes to social work research. For example, statistics is needed for sampling, scaling techniques for reliability and validity and analysis and interpretation of data. Economics also affects social work practice in the sense that social workers are often at the forefront in combating poverty. Therefore, becoming economically literate will help them understand the economic forces that affect the quality of their clients’ lives. This will enable social workers to recognize and direct clients to a state that will enhance their financial stressors. Furthermore, social workers should be to identify physiological influences on people’s lives, taking into account how this informs practice by appreciating human development during their life
Theory is defined as “…”. In the social work profession, it is not enough to just understand the definition of theory, but rather be able to integrate theory into practice when working to plan interventions at multiple practice levels. This integration of theory into the social work practice is an emphasis of the profession as noted in the profession’s core competencies. Core competency 2.1.6 “engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research” (NASW code of ethics) is the basis for theory integration within the social work profession. The profession’s practice behaviors state that social workers must “use research evidence to inform practice” (NASW code of ethics). In other words, social workers should “attend to findings
As the police adapt to the social climate, teachers try new learning methods and those in the medical profession use new medicines, social workers must too adapt and develop with the times. Everything was once an experiment, and there cannot be progression if Social Workers are not prepared to alter their mind-sets and practice according to new evidence and research. Being research minded, and able to question yourself and the things you are taught is integral to being a good social worker, and one who will be able to enable and protect the service users they work for through an ever changing, developing society.
As our society becomes more challenging, social workers help bridge the gaps for people who face extraordinary challenges in their lives. The social worker’s scope of practice may include helping at-risk or overwhelmed individuals find resources, develop new coping strategies, resolve problems and conflicts, and secure opportunities to improve their quality of life. (Flynn, 2013) Although the scope of practice is basically the same, there are various types of social workers with various levels of education. It doesn’t matter if you are a medical, clinical, school, military, psychiatric, or community social worker, the goal is basically the same.

I obtained my Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree from India in the year 2006. As with most countries around the world, the emergence of social work in India was from charity aiming to eliminate poverty. Gradually it shifted from philanthropy to rights based approach and then to organized social work. Community organization surfaced as the most central method of social work practice along with practice of casework. Although social work is much more structured in nature now, it still operates along the conventional perspective of social work. Social work is not even recognized as a profession in India. An indicator of an occupation being publicly recognized as a profession is exhibited by
School social work is lately expanding in many states. Funding for school social work positions can be linked to federal dollars and federal mandates. Any conflicts at the federal level could affect school social work positions. Changes in state funding could also affect school social work positions. The Midwestern portion of the country is currently the strongest area for school social work, but many other states across the country have strong programs.
Researchers, professionals and others use statistics to prove their claims or findings. Even though statistics are not an absolute fact because the conclusion is mostly drawn from a sample group – representative of a specific population subjected to the research, it is commonly used as the basis of decision making or alternating choices in daily living, studies, works, scientific research, politics and other planning. The inventor of a documentary film called “An inconvenient truth”, Mr. Al Gore, for instance, in his campaign to educate people about the climate change, used statistics to alert people that everyone on earth is polluting the environment and should participate in solving the problem. He collected data from many different countries with an in...
