When examining this article, it’s clear to say that the main claims made by the author is that they want to share personal narratives. The author presents a narrative of a hospital social worker and wants readers to get an understanding of what their day is like. The article focuses on giving the social worker a voice and allowing them to tell us their story and experience. Throughout the article it explores many area’s such as childhood, personal experiences, daily challenges and finally what their day is like as a hospital social worker. For example, it explores a range of different issues that this hospital social worker encountered and the demands of their role. This is a strength of this article, because it means the issues raised can be explained in detail and is based on human experience and this could be seen more compelling that quantitative data. Also, in terms of social work practice it could be seen to inspire and generate new ideas. For example, in this article it talks about the pressures of time with patients and how each patient differs. Therefore, this information provided could be seen useful as social workers reading this, may relate to some of the issues and this may motivate them to deal with their issues, and they may take new ideas from this article which can help them within their practice. However, a limitation of this article, is that it is idiographic. As mentioned before it’s based on one individual experience and it could be considered subjective as this narrative may be influenced by personal feelings and opinions and may not reflect a valid account of their day. Therefore, when considering is this article useful, we cannot be one hundred percent sure that all the information provided is genuine. Another, limitation of this article, is due to it being based on one person's experience, there is difficulties in trying to generalize the findings to the wider population. For example, we cannot assume that all hospital social worker’s day looks like this. Also, the article is based on a hospital in Canada (ethnocentric) and so other social worker’s days may be very different, if compared to another hospital outside the USA. Also throughout, the article, there is statistics produced by American associations and this is a limitation because the statistics are only useful for people within the USA or researchers. So overall we can see these limitations can lead to implications in social work practice, as they only

Urdang’s article is well written and highly informative. It maintains the reader’s interest and provides applicable information to social workers. Cunningham, M. (2012). Integrating Spirituality in Clinical Social Work Practice: Walking the Labyrinth (1 ed.). Upper Saddle River: Pearson Education Inc.
Caring for an individual who is facing a life threatening illness is often completed by a multidimensional team, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and caregivers, as well as family members. Social workers are an integral part of this team, since they are usually the healthcare workers that are involved in the evaluation and assessment of patients and their family members’ needs and concerns at the end ...

There are stereotypes about social workers in the healthcare field that can hinder a social worker’s performance. Many people automatically assume that social workers are only to make referrals and locate specific services (Borst, 2010). While there are social workers who do make referrals as part of their work, there are all different kinds of social workers, ranging from research to policy change. Many assume that a social worker in the healthcare field is there to find a way for an outpatient to get home when this is simply not the case. Social workers in the healthcare field typically work on an interdisciplinary team, along with doctors and nurses. Social workers in these teams are typically the ones who look at the patient’s culture, look for client strengths, and look beyond the medical ...
Interviewing and research skills are needed within the social work profession. Effective communication skills are one of the most crucial components of a social worker’s job. Every day, social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, convey critical information and make important decisions (Zeiger, 2017). This interview experience was an opportunity to explore the daily challenges and rewards of a licensed social worker. I was excited for the opportunity to interview a social worker in the gerontology sector as this is a specialty I am considering. This meeting allowed me to explore the educational steps of being a social worker, practices of the agency, the clients who are served, and the challenges the agency has.
This class, Social Work Theory & Practice was made to be able to introduce me to social work theories, ideas, and skills needed to work in the social work profession. This class main tool used was a book called A Brief Introduction of Social Work Theory by David Howe which discusses social work theories in a compressive and explainable way. This class is important to my higher learning because it break down the theories that I will need to use during my practice and a...
As social workers there will be numerous times in which one must do research on a certain topic or case they are working on. When conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, there is a logical sequence of events; both types articulating a clear problem statement must precede all other tasks (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2012, p. 55). If one does not have a clear problem statement, then the results may not be exactly what one is looking to achieve. Time is a precious entity, whether you are a client, researcher, social worker, whatever the case; one must a clear research problem so that time is not wasted on other aspects that have nothing to do with the end result. Conducting research can be an intense process, in using the proper
To provide effective social services, a social work graduate must possess a multitude of knowledge, skills and abilities. This will be a reflective paper on everything that I know for sure as a student of social work who is about to go into the world of work.
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
Becoming a social worker would be the greatest and rewarding achievement I could ever accomplish. The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. (Australian Association of Social Workers, 2016, para. 2).The area I’m interested to work in is Child Abuse and young people with disability because of personal experience. One of my major inspiration through her quote is (Mother Teresa 2001) “If you can 't feed a hundred people, then feed just one". I connect with this quote because I know I can never change the whole world but I can make a different in one-person life. After I completed year 12 of high school education I wasn’t sure is social work was for me. I decided to do a diploma of community service to get more idea of what social work do. Studying a diploma of community motivated me more to pursue a career as a social worker. This essay will reflect on my past experience and the things motivated me the most to become social work practitioner. This reflection will discuss the values, beliefs as social worker.
The case work process and situation let me understand the complexities involved in social life. It does not only act as a helping relationship for the client but the case worker as well. Overall, the feeling of being able to help someone in the field gives me immense satisfaction. Though the process is tedious and long, it requires long- term commitment by the social worker to go through this process and make a positive impact on the lives of individuals.
The work of a social worker is complex and all encompassing. Social workers work in many capacities seeking justice, liberation, and equality. There work is global, as they work to put policies in place to govern practices. To keep up with societal shifts and generational changes there learning is continuous. As new questions rise so does the need for the continuation of research, not only to answer these questions but to implement into
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
