Statistics Investigation
In this investigation I have been asked to carry out a line of enquiry
with the statistics provided within a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
provided by Edexcel examining board. There are various different
statistics for different things, some examples include; age, IQ, year
group, height, weight and many more. A total of 27 categories are
shown on the spreadsheet. My teacher advised me to carry out two main
tasks within the overall investigation. It was suggested that I carry
out one line of enquiry with two pieces of quantitative information,
and then one more investigation that could either be with one piece of
quantitative information and one piece of qualitative or with two
pieces of qualitative information. Quantitative means statistics that
involve numbers e.g. IQ, weight and qualitative means statistics that
are not shown with numbers e.g. hair and eye colours.
The two investigations I decided to do were:
1) Two pieces of quantitative information - Contrast the variations in
weight and height..The aim is to find out if there is any correlation
between weight and height and if so what it is. Also I will separate
this coursework further by dividing it into male and females to see if
there is any difference in correlation there.
2) One piece of qualitative information and one piece of quantitative
information - Contrast between left-handed people and their IQ. The
aim is to try and see if there is a correlation between left handed
people and how they achieve in exams. This is really killing two birds
with one stone - I'm completing an essential math's coursework whilst
at the same time investigating something which I'm very curious about.
I'm going to carry these two tasks out completely separately;
therefore in essence this piece of coursework is actually going to
consist of two investigation in one.
Firstly I will investigate the height and weights - part one.
Part one; Investigating Height and Weight
Due to there being such vast quantities of data regarding height and
weight on the spreadsheet, I have decided to make my aims more
The first component of the MUST involves measuring the patient’s height and weight to establish their Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is the’ relationship b...
A researcher determines that 42.7% of all downtown office buildings have ventilation problems. Is this a statistic or a parameter; explain your answer.
Research can be quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research is objective and involves measuring the phenomena under investigation. Qualitative research is subjective, explores experiences and feelings, and involves the recording of phenomena that cannot easily be quantified (Toates, 2010, pp. 5-6). Both are empirical since they involve data collection (OU, n.d.).
According to Smith (1983) quantitative research is to explain, predict and develop laws that can be universally applied and Qualitative research is the interpretation and understanding of what people give to their situation. The researchers clearly stated the purpose of their studies, aim, objectiv...
Almost every year a hurricane blast through Florida and takes its toll on the business, industry and affects the lives and dollars of the company and its workers. One can ask themselves, "How do we prevent this from happening again?" This is usually what businesses and persons affected by a hurricane ask each other. What about a hospital? How would a hospital prepare for a hurricane? To complicate things more, how would a hospital prepare for a hurricane if the hospital is to operate 24 hours a day? This is the question that Pierre, Keith, Carol, Getta and James have proposed.
According to Rachel Boba, “Crime analysis is a law enforcement function that involves systematic analysis for identifying and analyzing patterns and trends in crime and disorder” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime analysis). The information on these patterns can assist law enforcement agencies in the deployment of resources in a more effective manner; it can also help detectives to identify and catch suspects. Crime analysis also plays a role in improvising solutions to crime problems, and developing crime prevention strategies. There are various types of technology that is used in crime analysis. Crime analysis relies heavily on computer technology, and over the past fifteen years there has been a significant improvement in computer hardware and software that has led to tremendous developments in this field. One form of hardware that is used by Crime analysts to complete most of their work is Desktop personal computers, laptop computers are also used by crime analysts for fieldwork and presentations. Other forms of hardware that are used include color laser printers that can produce high-quality documents quickly, plotters which are printers that can produce large poster size color maps, scanners, and digital cameras, these specific types of hardware is mostly used by police departments when analyzing crime.
The University generally requires formal papers to use section headings to establish structure. For this short paper, section headings are not required, but they are encouraged.

I took AP Statistics my junior year of high school and I was the only junior in a senior class. At first, I was really shy because I did not know anyone in the class, but after a few weeks, I had made new friends and was enjoying everyone's company. Usually, I am used to excelling in math with minimal effort, it simply came naturally, however anyone who has taken statistics knows it is not like other math class. It was extremely difficult in the beginning and was trying as best I could to understand what we were learning, but it was like nothing I had done before, however, it was the teachers first time teaching AP Statistics so, she was trying to figure things out just like the rest of us in the class. On open house night, my mother and I
The Collier Encyclopedia’s definition for probability is the concern for events that are not certain and the reasonableness of one expectation over another. These expectations are usually based on some facts about past events or what is known as statistics. Collier describes statistics to be the science of the classification and manipulation of data in order to draw inferences. Inferences here can be read to mean expectations, leading to the conclusion that the two go hand in hand in accomplishing what mankind has tried to accomplish since the beginning of time – predicting the future. It is the notion of science that this is the most accurate way to predict events yet to occur and this has lead to it being the most widely accepted “fortune telling'; tool in the world today.
Statistics refers to the use of numerical information in everyday life to calculate facts and figures in limitless circumstances such as, batting averages, market share, and changes in the stock market. In addition, statistics refers to the scientific collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting numerical data. Statistics involves describing data sets and drawing conclusions based on sampling about the data sets (McClave, Benson & Sincich, 2011). Statistics are divided into two areas: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.
Quantitative means it can be measured or expressed in numerical form. Qualitative is related to the character of something. Test scores and assessments of students are quantitative and teacher observations of students are qualitative. In their article, Jupp and Education (2009) strongly feel teacher effectiveness cannot be looked at based on one point in time; instead students learning should be evaluated from the beginning of a school year to the end looking at what students know before and what they know exiting. In a Farr (2010) book, Teacher as Leadership: the Highly Effective Teachers Guide to Closing the Achievement Gap, effective teachers are defined by looking at six characteristics or skills.... ...
Experimental psychology is a branch of psychology that scientifically investigates psychological processes in humans that result in behavior. There are a variety of different ways to approach a psychological hypothesis. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses, and most focus on only one aspect of psychology. All approaches have the same goal; they aspire to increase knowledge about human behavior. A few relevant approaches are physiological, cognitive, and social. I believe these approaches are the key to understanding psychological processes and behaviors, although some approaches are weaker than others.
Whether or not people notice the importance of statistics, people is using them in their everyday life. Statistics have been more and more important for different cohorts of people from a farmer to an academician and a politician. For example, Cambodian famers produce an average of three tons or rice per hectare, about eighty per cent of Cambodian population is a farmer, at least two million people support party A, and so on. According to the University of Melbourne, statistics are about to make conclusive estimates about the present or to predict the future (The University of Melbourne, 2009). Because of their significance, statistics are used for different purposes. Statistics are not always trustable, yet they depend on their reliable factors such as sample, data collection methods and sources of data. This essay will discuss how people can use statistics to present facts or to delude others. Then, it will discuss some of the criteria for a reliable statistic interpretation.
