In response to your available Temporary Sales Associate position. I am enclosing a resume for your review. Please consider this letter my formal application presenting my background, education and experience.
My employment as a Grocery Parcel at Fred Meyer and a Sales Associate/Loader at Lowe’s illustrates why I’m capable and qualified for this job. On my resume, there will be a sizable list of tasks that I was responsible for, but in this letter I’d like to focus on the qualities I took away from those jobs.
Fred Meyer was my first job. I came in with little to no experience. From day one the phrase “Customers first” was echoed by management constantly, typically followed with a spiel on what customer service means to Fred Meyer’s. At first
I found it repetitious but, after I started interacting with customers I realized the message management was trying to get across. Customer service isn’t just about keeping customers satisfied it’s about going above and beyond to understand your customer not only does that little extra effort show them you truly care about their issues it keeps them coming back. I took away a lot from my time at Lowe’s but the most important thing was how to work with a team. There is always a large variety of tasks to complete between retail associates and being able to divide these tasks between one another with effective communications will ultimately cater to the strengths of preferences of certain co-workers makes for a much smoother work environment. Without this sort of communicative team work you run into cases where certain tasks are completed more than once while others are neglected. In the course of my academic tenure at Oregon State University I Majored in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. I am now in the process of transferring to Washington State University to major in Dietetics and Kinesiology. I am not changing my major because of a lack of aptitude but rather a lack of passion towards programming. That of course doesn’t mean I’ve lost interest in technology, I believe that my background in computer science will help me assist customers with all of their shopping needs. Also, my desire to transfer to Washington State makes me a uniquely qualified candidate for this position because I am not seeking long term employment. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you believe I’m qualified I would be more than happy to schedule an interview at a mutually convenient time. You can reach me by email or the phone number listed above and in the resume.
Chick-fil-A recognizes that their brand promise starts the minute the customer enters the premises. When a store opens for the first time, the franchised operator doesn’t just see an opportunity to sell his food product, but rather a “chance to interact, build community, and engage with customers and the community at large. We do this in a variety of ways. First and foremost, we strive to provide 2nd Mile Service to each customer. As we work to continuously improve, we want customers to experience something unique. We want to build community and create relationships between our customers and our food, people and restaurants” [3].
Carl Sewell’s book “Customers for Life” is devoted to teaching the businessperson of today ways in which they can turn one-time buyers into customers for life. He states that every customer has the ability to be worth 332,000 dollars to your business if you can keep them for life. Mr. Sewell is the number selling luxury automobile dealer in the country. He started from the bottom and manipulated his automobile business into a 250,000,000-dollar business. In his book he explains the things that he has found to work for his business in great detail so that you may also apply them to your business. The entire book revolves around these 10 commandments to customer service:
Without good customer service and keeping your promises, your company would have loyal customers. According to 5 Focusing Steps, “If you’re not yet sold on the idea, consider that a 2 percent increase in customer retention has the same effect as decreasing costs by 10 percent. Not only that, but it costs over six times more to get a new customer than it does to keep one.” Customer satisfaction should be a golden rule of all companies.
Earl Sasser Jr. discusses why customers matter in his lecture because customers are essential in every business that have been created. He began by providing a story about a local grocery store in Norwalk Connecticut that kept expanding. Their customers were dedicated to making their store the best it could be by providing suggestions and participating in focus groups that concluded in results from the suggestions. Sasser wanted to show businesses that were not efficient in their customer care why their customers should matter because there are some companies who have leaders that have instilled these ways in their companies but there are some that neglect the fact that their customers do matter. Sasser says that if you listen to all the CEOs
Service wins the game.” As Tony Allesandra states, in order to have+ a successful business, customer service must remain a priority. It is also proven that shoppers are more likely to return to retailers with good customer service over those without. This past summer, my mothers’ best friend was getting married, so my mom and I drove to the mall. Once we had found a parking spot, we both walked towards Banana Republic; I began to walk faster, as if I was being pulled like a magnet, and threw inspiring words back to my mother to pick up her pace. In no time, my mother and I were walking through Banana Republics’ entrance. The greeter said hello and asked us if we were looking for anything in particular. I told the greeter- named Lacey- about my mothers’ issue of not having a dress to wear. Lacey immediately noted my moms’ height and age which would narrow her down her choices, yet she still ended up finding several options that both my mother and I loved. With the help of Lacey, the hardest part of this shopping trip was trying to decide which dresses to put back; my mom ended up wearing lovely textured grey dress that fell just above the knee accompanied with a modest v-shaped neckline. Banana Republic not only made a sell with their superior customer service, but they also gained the trust of my family and free advertisement because my mother now recommends Banana Republic to all her friends. Burning Spear has in the past 25+ years achieved many acclaims as a reggae musician. He is known to many as the African teacher; the elder statesman of reggae; a cultural ambassador; a preacher; a rastaman. The main themes incorporated into his music are the teachings of Marcus Garvey, African roots, Rastafarian beliefs, and consciousness, especially black consciousness. Spear's sound is said to be hypnotic and trance-like (Bloodlines, Davis and Simon, 1992, 53-55). His lyrics are simple, but the resonant sound of Spear's voice, along with the drum and bass, intensifies the listening experience to its fullest. His music is meant to be heard in every part of your body; to carry the listener to a higher state of being; to uplift. In Newsday, Elena Oumano wrote:"At its heights, reggae music transforms the loss rage and love of 2 million former slaves/colonials into"dread"consciousness, and international revolution of the mind against blind acceptance of the world as it is, rocking affirmation of the power of the underclass to elevate the human spirit,"(Oumano, 1991, p 17). Spear's reggae has, since the beginning, continued to reach this height.
Customer service by definition is the ability of knowledgeable, capable, and enthusiastic employees to deliver products and services to their internal and external customers in a manner that satisfies identified and unidentified needs and ultimately results in positive word-of-mouth publicity and return business (Lucas, 2012, pg.7). In other words, it’s making the customer pleased so that they keep doing business with you all while making sure that the employees get along and work together well. In every business there is a form of customer service. Unfortunately, it is not always excellent or even decent. Some businesses just either don’t care or possibly just don’t have the training to deal with some of the obstacles that come with dealing with customers on a daily basis. I’ve been in the restaurant business for over 13 years and I can tell you that there are skills that some are born with and others need training on, yet either way they should be used whenever interacting with customers.
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
“Excellent customer service is defined as service that treats customers with a friendly attitude and tries to resolve their problem or question as efficiently as possible.” (Reference). Employees also need to realize that providing excellent customer service will provide positive word of mouth recommendations for the business that they work for in the community. A business wants their customers to say that I am coming back to this location because of the customer service that I received from this employee. “You’ll never have a product or price advantage again. They can be easily duplicated, but a strong customer service culture can’t be copied. -Jerry Fritz”.
