The group that my group and I choose to focus on was the office supply retailing large corporation Staples. For now Staples is publicly traded company with the ticker symbol of SPLS however this may change in the next year due to Sycamore Partners acquiring Staples which in the long run may make their stocks private. Staples were created in 1986 by Thomas George Stemberg who is considered to be pioneer in the retail world because of his ideas and innovations. One of Stemberg’s most innovative ideas was completely cutting out any wholesaler’s interference in his company and selling directly to the consumer. These services play a major part in the competitive and long term plan that Staples has developed to compete in the stacked retail industry. One common thing that most of the retail industry has in common is being consumer friendly, and continuously making their services more accessible and easy for people. We first saw this back in the beginning of the century with companies becoming more social by creating websites where they would show their upcoming events and sales to the consumer before they would even come to the store. The internet was around far longer than just 2000 during this time there was a transition where the internet was no longer just some niche thing that only a few people had. It instead was a household thing that most people owned and creating a website and advertising the company you worked under on a website was a way in adapting to this change. The same thing that happened back then is occurring in 2017 but this time with social media. Staples like most companies in the same industry understand that being social on platforms such as Twitter, or Instagram can help them remain competitive. Staples also created an app named Staples – Shopping App which shows how progressive they’ve become because of the change in the industry in the last 10 years. The reason for this is because consumers can either shop online, or in store and Staples will provide their products to them. And Staples also recently launched their new B2B strategy which is their ecommerce site. This allows 3rd parties to buy products for specific industries, in which they plan to expand their variety of industry products. And in an effort to show that their impact stretches further then just office supplies Staples works alongside some very well meaning organizations. One of these organizations is The Boys and Girls club of America in hopes to keep the children on the path to success by making sure they’re prepared to go to school and succeed. The last dimension discussed is the environment. The scores for environment are quite close and even exceed that of other sustainable businesses. Jury (2015) indicated that Michaels Stores Inc. is an arts and crafts store, most of their products are made from paper and there might be other products that contain substances that will be harmful to the people if not properly disposed. Therefore there is a facility where products from paper and cardboard are disposed of properly. Also there is a company that comes in to take away harmful chemicals and dispose of them accordingly.

These factors can either hinder individuals from achieving their goals or some use the negative as a stepping stone. According to “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, this quote becomes relatable. Staples and Tan experience many internal and external factors that impeded their goals. For instance, Staples experience many racial and gender-based conflict on his road to success as Tam face many language-based and literacy-based barriers preventing triumph. Although Tan and Staples encounter various hardships on their journey toward success; instead of quitting due to frustration, the two creates a greater force towards achievement.
The Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that provides charitable funds to 170 children’s hospitals in the United States and Canada. Nearly 500 corporations participate in fundraisers and campaigns that provide hospitals with equipment, research, and care to children who suffer from injuries and illnesses. To date, Children’s Miracle Network has raised more than 4.7 billion dollars, and what’s unique about this organization is that every penny stays within the network (CMN, n.d.). Children’s Miracle Network has been extremely successful over the last thirty one years due to the relationships that they have built with corporations, the extreme media coverage that they obtain, and the lives and stories of those associated with CMN that have influenced communities to make a difference one dollar at a time.
The primary Kmart store opened its doors on March 1, 1962, in Garden City, Michigan, which focused on selling a huge product selection at cut-rate prices. Throughout the first 30 years, Kmart was referred to as largest retailer store around, even surpassing its competitor Walmart. Kmart stores were designed to increase store sales by increasing the frequency of customer visits. For three decades Kmart looked like there was doing everything right but when they were growing they were also slipping in to a deep hole. Many factors played in their eventual cutback, but supply chain management was their biggest fault. In the 1990’s growing competitors like Target, Sears, and Home Depot took some Kmart’s market place with Wal-Mart taking the biggest slice.
The best way to continue capitalizing on diversification would be to introduce a coffee bar and offer free Wi-Fi in an area close to where business services are offered. While customers are waiting around on products to be finished getting copied, placed in binders, and more, they can drink coffee, work on proposals, and shop around. Doing so can change the atmosphere by inviting the prospects of new customers and sales into stores, as well as it could give Staples an edge over it competitors.
