The cause of Blanche’s mental breakdown is Stanley. Stanley’s character traits display signs of Darwinism. Darwinism is a belief that the strongest or fittest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die. (Herbert) Stanley is considered to be over-powering and has animal-like characteristics. One can see his physical masculinity and power right from the start of the play. It is conveyed through scene one when Stanley ‘heaves the package of raw meat carelessly at Stella. It is not proper edict to throw meat at a woman. Throughout the play, Stanley and Blanche collide with each other over, while Stella tries to mediate. “Her appearance is incongruous to this setting. She is dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of pearl, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district” (Williams). Williams express’ this to the audience to pronounce the importance of her attire. The way she is dressed symbolizes the element of illusion. He feels threated because Blanche wears material assets to create the illusions that she is clean and pure. Blanche cannot cope with reality, which she is promiscuous and dirty therefore creates this illusion. Throughout the play one can see how Blanches she relies on illusion to maintain mental stability. She is very submissive toward Stanley, but always defends her sister. From the very beginning, Stella defends her sister due to loyalty, and guilt for leaving her sister at Belle Reve alone. When Stanley asks Stella about the papers for Belle Reve, Stella replies “there weren’t any papers, she didn’t show any papers, I don’t care about papers” (Williams). Stanley doesn’t let go of the fact that Blanche is hiding something. Stella also says ” “Lately you have been doing all you can think of to rub her the wrong way, Stanley, and Blanche is sensitive and you’ve got to realize that Blanche and I grew up under very different circumstance than you did” (Williams). Stella is deceived by her lies, but Stanley’s desire to exercise dominance will reveal all of Blanches
