The teachers and students in “Stand and Deliver” all come from different backgrounds, and each has their own unique personality. Personality is described as a relatively stable set of traits that aid in explaining and predicting individual behaviour. A personality that stands out in this movie is the student's algebra teacher Jaime Escalante. He is a driven man who leaves a well paying job in order to pursue his dream and to share his love for math. Jamie is a passionate, hard worker and he teaches his work ethic to his students as well. It is said there are type A and type B personalities, type A being fast moving, driven, time conscious, competitive and preoccupied at work just to name a few traits. On the other hand, type B personalities …show more content…
are more laid back, relaxed and not in a rush to finish tasks. Jamie is very much a type A personality, this shows in his dedication and focus on his students. He is so focused on teaching the kids and advancing their futures that he forgets about himself, and the stress associated with a type A personality begins to take its toll. Some common stressors for this type of personality can be situations, feelings of anxiety, tension, and high pressure. It is made clear he experiences all of these on a day to day basis. They show him experiencing many different situations of intimidation, pressure to perform, and struggling to keep the kids focused on their futures. Jamie suffers a major heart attack during the film after the stress becomes too much for his body to handle. And even after being told to rest and take it easy, he resorts back to his type A ways and continues to teach and push the limits. While introducing himself to the class and getting to know them, Mr. Escalante comes across many different attitudes and values. An attitude is a strong belief or feeling toward people, things, and situations. A memorable attitude is when Mr. Escalante meets Angel for the first time, he is introduced to this boy who could not care less about math or being in school. Mr. Escalante senses his attitude towards the class and instantly starts antagonizing the boys because it is clear this is not the life the boy want to live, it is simply an act. By mimicking the boys attitude and showing angel that you can act tough and learn math it begins to break down angels self concept, which is the overall attitude he has about himself . Mr. Escalante never acts intimidated or threatened by angel or his friends, in fact he tells him how silly angel is acting and how the only future he will have if he continues not caring, is flipping burgers. This seems to strike a cord, and angel begins to see with some help that he can change his future. Mr. Escalante works very hard and goes well out of his way to ensure each one of his students feels they have a place in his class if they work for it. He works very hard at molding and reshaping the values each student has. Values are the things that have worth or are important to each individual. Starting the year off, education was not a value to many of his students, but by showing the power a good education can have, the students work very hard to increase their knowledge in hopes of paving a brighter future for themselves. He shows them just how meaningful having a college education can be, and how many of them would not get very far or be happy without it, and while it was not easy for them to achieve, they accomplished something no one could ever take from them. Leadership and trust plays a large role in this film. The students experience leadership from their new teacher, and learn to trust him as well as themselves. Leadership is the process of influencing others to work towards the achievement of objectives. The Ghiselli Study by Edwin Ghiselli explains that their are traits that are important to effective leadership, however not all are needed for success. The traits listed are supervising ability, need for occupational achievement, intelligence, decisiveness, self assurance, and initiative. Jamie shows supervising ability when he is first able to control the class and keep them interested in what he will do and say next. Occupational achievement and initiative is shown when he decides it would be best that there is a calculus program all summer long, not only does he have great attendance, but the students actually learn and understand the concepts. Decisiveness and self assurance is expressed through his decision to teach instead of working a job that would easily double his income and cut his hours in half. Jamie believes he is making the right choice by changing others futures. And finally Mr. Escalante’s intelligence is abundant, his personal and educational intelligence is used throughout the film while teaching the students in the classroom, and helping them with their own dilemmas at home. Mr. Escalante clearly expresses and is well developed in all of these traits, the way he teaches the students and fights for them when being wrongly accused of organized cheating is something an admirable leader should do. However, Mr. Escalante must first gain the trust of all of his students in order for him to be seen as a leader in their eyes, and he achieves that. He needs them to see that their education is very important and they can achieve so much more than they are aware of. The main ways to develop trust is through integrity, competence, consistency, loyalty, and openness. Jamie is able to gain the trust of all of his students by really building a relationship and a sense of caring and openness. However, he still stays firm and consistent, not allowing excuses or slip ups on their part trying to teach them the importance of seeing things through and showing them what they are capable of. Through doing this he is able to gain not only the trust of his current students, but the trust of the entire school district, and students come from all around in order to be taught and learn from a man held at such high praise. Jaime Escalante helped and pushed his students to be successful and think about their future careers. Career Development is the process of gaining skill, experience, and education to achieve career goals. All of the students had minimal education and felt that they could only manage to work in minimum wage jobs due to their ethnicity and upbringing. However, Escalante pushed them to further their education and learn tough subjects, such as calculus, in order to gain the knowledge and skill needed to strive for higher and better careers. The students also had to learn how to manage their time between their personal lives and school. Time management is defined as getting more done in less time with better results. Escalante's classes were very demanding and required the students to come to school early and stay late every day of the week. They had to sacrifice their personal time during the weekends and summer break to attend Escalante's classes. An example of one student who struggled with time management would be Angel, who arrived late to class on a couple of occasions. One such occasion was because he had to take his grandmother to the doctor, and because of that he couldn't make it to class on time. Angel struggled between his duties to take care of his grandmother and making the time to attend school. Another example is how the students had to learn how to effectively use their time to study for the AP exam, especially the second time they took it. They only had one day to review the entire course before they took the AP exam for the second time. During the film, Assertive behavior seems to be used a very high amount. Mr. Escalante is assertive from the first day he arrives. Assertiveness is the process of expressing thoughts and feelings while asking for what one wants in an appropriate way. Jamie is assertive towards the school board, the students, and the state when they begin investigating the students perfect passing record. By being assertive too the students, he is able to be totally upfront and blunt with them which creates a sense of transparency in their relationship and allows for trust and growth. It is said that people with assertive behavior are not intimidated, they are confident, and do not let others control their behavior. Jamie is very strongly assertive when introducing his plans to the school board for his summer program, and he refuses to take no as an answer, as he knows it is what is best for his kids. By standing behind his beliefs and fully believing in the kids and their ability to grow and perform, others begin to believe him and allow him to continue with his plans. Had he have been passive with his approach, the students would not have learned as much about education or themselves, because they never would have taken the AP Calc exam. Power is a person’s ability to influence others to do something they would not otherwise do. Jamie is the most powerful character in this movie, that being said, the students presented power to Jamie as well. The main bases of power used in the film were legitimate, reward, and expert power. The legitimate power is based on the user’s position power, and Jamie uses this when he still needs to maintain the position and role of their teacher and their elder. He uses legitimate power when he simply asked the students to settle down, or turn in their homework or even when he tells them to focus and buckle down on their future and their education. The reward power comes in when Jamie creates a win for the students by telling them what they can have to look forward to and how much they will gain for putting forth all if their effort. Reward power is the user's ability to influence others with something of value to them. Jamie is able to use their futures and their dreams as the reward, painting the picture of success in their heads if they are willing to work for it. Finally expert power is evident when the students come to Mr. Escalante for help or assistance. Expert power is defined as the user’s skill and knowledge. The students value Mr. Escalante’s expertise and experience and they truly start to respect his deadlines and objectives. When Jamie takes them on the field trip to the computer company his neighbor works at, they are shocked and in awe that someone could work everyday with software and technology like that, after this they see how important the skills he is teaching them are. The two investigators from the ETS also use expert power while investigating and catching flaws in school systems. They use their knowledge and expertise while investigating the students over the accusation of cheating. Inspirational appeal is when you arouse someone's enthusiasm, Jaime uses inspirational appeal with the class he tells them that they are smart enough to go to college and tries to get them to believe in themselves.
He also uses it with other teachers, saying that he does not do all he can to help the kids, and when trying to get the class to study with one night before the retake of the AP calc test. Ingratiation is the use of praise to get what one wants. Jaime uses this tactic throughout the entire movie, he tells the kids how smart they are, and how they can all do it if they just apply what they know, in order to motivate the kids and to keep pushing them. From the beginning he was always sincere about it, and he truly believed it. Personal appeal tactic is when someone uses loyalty and friendship to motivate or try and get what one wants. Jamie uses personal appeal almost subconsciously, he never asks his students to do their homework or to study for him, but to do it for themselves. After the kids see how much he puts into teaching them, and how much it is affecting him health wise and in his personal life, they feel they owe it to him. The connection they have as student and teacher becomes very strong, and they begin to do what he asks simply out of respect and admiration and
trust.
All actions entail an inner, psychological cause. This idea can be applied in literary analysis, one novel being Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Throughout Brave New World, the World State emerges as ideal and flawless with scientific and technological advancements. One way to examine such world is with the psychoanalytical lens–an approach in literature focusing on character psychology–to divulge significant meanings in conscious and unconscious behaviors. Utilizing the psychoanalytic lens, one can perceive the flaws of the World State through various people.

As a class we were given a list of movies we could choose from to write about the principals of psychology. Personally my favorite movie growing up was “Big Daddy“. Big Daddy is a comedy that was released in the late 1990’s. This movie had my favorite actor, Adam Sandler in it which is why I had watched it at least a million times since it was released. I am also a huge fan of the Sprouce bothers growing up as I wanted them to be my boyfriend *laughs*. Big daddy was about a man named Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) whom was a thirty two year old who never wanted to have responsibilities in life. Sonny had attended law school but never went through with getting his bar exam. Sonny’s girlfriend gets mad at him in the movie for not growing up which
For my psychology interview assignment, I had the privilege of interviewing Elaine, who is the Director of Preschool X, which is an educational institution. She reports that she has been in this position for 13 years since its inception. Elaine is a close friend of my aunt, which was how I was able to meet her. She explained that her responsibilities include; the hiring of all personnel related to the school, submission of criminal background checks, the medical reports for all staff and children must be current, and also developed a curriculum for the teachers to execute. She has parent meetings and she deals with parents on a daily basis. For any arising issues, Elaine conferences with parents at least once or twice a week. Have weekly staff meetings regarding the curriculum. She also plays the role as the educational event coordinator, where she would “invite people from the dinosaur museum or alley pond park to come over to her preschool, to enrich the children”.

My paper is based on an article from the text’s web site (chapter 9) entitled “Lack of sleep ages body’s systems.” The basic claim of the article is that sleep deprivation has various harmful effects on the body. The reported effects include decreased ability to metabolize glucose (similar to what occurs in diabetes) and increased levels of cortisol (a stress hormone involved in memory and regulation of blood sugar levels). The article also briefly alludes (in the quote at the bottom of page 1) to unspecified changes in brain and immune functioning with sleep deprivation.
Psychology is the investigation of the mind and how it processes and directs our thoughts, actions and conceptions. However, in 1879 Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig in Germany. Nevertheless, the origins of psychology go all the way back thousands of years starting with the early Greeks. This foundation is closely connected to biology and philosophy; and especially the subfields of physiology which is the study of the roles of living things and epistemology, which is the study of comprehension and how we understand what we have learned. The connection to physiology and epistemology is often viewed as psychology, which is the hybrid offspring of those two fields of investigation.
Different people describe the word ‘personality’ differently. Martin et al. (2010,p.610) describes personality as a “particular pattern of behavior and thinking that prevails across time and situations, and differentiates one person from another”. According to Mullins and Christy (2013,p.136), they explain that Personality may be perceived as “consisting of stable characteristics that explains why an individual behaves a certain way. Independence, conscientiousness, agreeableness and self-control are all examples of personality characteristics”. Mullins and Christy (2013, p.136) further explain that we can only identify and understand a person’s personality from listening, watching and observing them. For instance, an independent person may show independence characteristic by demonstrating a strong sense of self-sufficiency. It would be expected that this individual would not be dependable on other people around him and if this is established, it can support the characteristic being a consistent part of the person’s behavior. Individuals are therefore generally consistent in the way they respond to situations. At...
Public Safety Officials have been battling the difficult question of profiling for quite a while. The question is how do they know the suspected individual fit the category associated with an offense? While it has been proven that many profiling cases are somewhat directed to a racial profile, it can be proven that people, given the discretion, are able to identify explanations for a series of behavioral events by identifying what that behavior accredits to. This theory, identified by Frite Heider, “suggested that we have a tendency to give casual explanations for someone’s behavior, often by crediting either the situation or the person’s disposition,” called the attribution theory. Until recently, a study of the like was considered to be a branch of sociology and not a form of psychology. Social psychology essentially became the focus on the individual rather than the group as a whole. Many thoughtful ideas are collected in response to the studies of social psychology. Human cognition is understood to arise from interacting socially; highlighting the importance of socialization. We use social cognition to develop our explanations and our ideas on why a person’s behavior is/does what it is/does.
Personality traits can affect success in school and many other long-term outcomes. Traits affect daily moods as well (Feist & Feist, 2009). An individual’s personality may seem unstable from one situation to the next: this means that an individual may be acutely aware of his or her academic work, but not aware of the cleanliness of his home or the working condition of his car (Feist & Feist, 2009). The lack of interest in the cleanliness of the home and the working order of the car may be from any number of factors, but it still points out that his trait of being conscientious is situational. A person’s disposition will only affect his behavior under certain conditions or in specific situations (Feist & Feist, 2009). This observation seems to suggest that an individual’s perceptions of self and situation play a strong role in behavior, as opposed to personality as the only indicator (Feist & Feist, 2009). Another example of situational changes in personality includes dating. A person that is outgoing and friendly may be shy and reserved when on a date with a new person, or when they around someone they are interested in. This may be because the person wants to make a good impression; it co...
I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.
The Science of Psychology “Psychology is the scientific study of mind, brain and behaviour. Some of what you do learn may seem like ‘common sense’, or at least familiar to you because you are learning about topics in which you can relate to. However some things you may believe is true, but is incorrect. The way we know this is through the application of scientific methods.” Mark Leary suggests that the subject matter of psychology is much more familiar to most people than is the subject matter of physics or biology; we see behaviour all around us.
As a type A personality I am always on the go, seeking efficiencies in nearly every task, if not attempting to do multiple tasks at once (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 114). With high job motivation, I am at the top of my organization able to influence and control the planning and execution of daily events (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 220). I am
One of the more popular areas of psychology is Educational Psychology. Educational Psychology can be explained several ways. The idea is to study theories and concepts from different parts of psychology and apply them in educational settings. These educational settings may occur in different school settings such as preschool. The goal of educational psychology is to create a positive student-teacher relationship. Educational psychology uses five different types of psychology, behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and social cognitive, and constructivist in this research paper I will be briefly discussing each type of psychology listed above.
So taking consider in their views, my opinion would be personality is a sort of a behavioral pattern which possess in an individual: how you behave, how you think, how you feel and how you interact with the others. Understanding about personality is important to guide good students as well as problematic students. Children comes from different family backgrounds and some children face many problems in their childhoood. Teachers need to understand these situations and find solutions for it. Mainly children needs attention from the teachers, because they are not getting it from their close family members. To handle these pupils the best method is to use communicative approach. These students have their own personality, so teachers needs to be open heart and willing to listen to their problems. This will help in building a good teacher - student relationship and also it will help teachers to find solutions for their
