In “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” Dana Fleming presents an essay concerning the safety of social networking sites and how Universities can deal and prevent problems. This article is targeted towards school administrators, faculty, and a social networking user audience who will either agree or disagree with her statement. I believe Fleming presents an excellent, substantial case for why she reasons the way she does. Fleming gives a sound, logical argument according to Toulmin’s Schema. This essay has an evident enthymeme, which has a claim and reasons why she believes in that way. Toulmin refers to this as “grounds."
The court ruled that since the student had done it from his home computer, and the speech had not caused any disruptions in the school, the student was in no violation. The court ordered the school to allowed the student to get his grades back to where they were prior to his suspension, and he was allowed to put his page back online. In the end, this case has been referred to in many other cases related to off-campus speech. HBO originally aired David Simon’s critically acclaimed crime drama The Wire in 2002. The show went on to air for five seasons, finishing in 2008 after a total of 60 hour long episodes. The series follows different social and institutional systems in the city of Baltimore, while concentrating on the inner-city drug scene. The Wire is unique with it’s extensively large cast, complex story lines and the overall authenticity in style. Simon uses an almost documentarian approach while commenting on “the immobility of society’s largest institutions” (Potter 201).
Higher education law attorney Dana L. Fleming voices her controversial opinion in favor of institutionalized involvement in social network protection in her article “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” (Fleming). Posted in the New England Journal of Higher Education, winter of 2008 issue, Fleming poses the question of responsibility in monitoring students’ online social networking activities. With a growing population of students registering on social networks like Facebook and MySpace, she introduces the concern of safety by saying, “like lawmakers, college administrators have not yet determined how to handle the unique issues posed by the public display of their students’ indiscretions.” However, while Dana Fleming emphasizes the horror stories of social networking gone-bad, she neglects the many positive aspects of these websites and suggests school involvement in monitoring these sites when the role of monitoring should lie with parents or the adult user.

Social media is revolutionizing the way we communicate and interact with one another. For better or worse we are connecting in ways that simply did not exist a decade ago, and those connections are presenting schools with increasing number of challenges. School districts shoulder the responsibility for the well-being of today’s students and with the advent of social media, districts are at the center of legal issues concerning student’s freedom of speech and a school’s responsibility to provide an appropriate learning environment.

[Ch. 1, p. 39.] ‘Ignorant’ is the key word in this passage. Slaves seemed to be valued because of their ignorance. As long as they followed their master’s wishes and didn’t raise any questions, they were being “manageable slaves”. Not letting the slaves have their own identities and background made it easier for their masters to control them. It is also interesting how Douglass compares a slave to a horse. It may be upsetting to the reader to see a human treated the same way as a horse. This dehumanizes the slaves in a way. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion, I know nothing; the means of knowing was withheld from me. [Ch. 1, p. 40.] It was rumored that Captain Anthony was Frederick’s father. Clues point to this by the kindness of Captain Anthony’s daughter to Frederick or the beatings and rape of Frederick’s aunt. In any case, there was no mention of it, especially to Frederick. He was not allowed to have this kind of knowledge. His master feared that if Frederick knew of his background, he would be deemed useless as a slave. Knowledge was a thing valued by slaves and feared by their masters.
The purpose of the speech provided by Chimamanda Adichie is to portray the various impacts a single story can have on both an individual and a society. This is because of the usage of stereotypes provided by the media which creates an overall image, that everyone believes to be true. This is prominent when she says “A single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.” Having a single story also confines the world to generalized outlooks on cultures, religions and nationalities. Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and author of“Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, states that the initial purpose of having access to the Internet in the classroom was to give students the opportunity to conduct research. However, this privilege is rapidly being used as a means for students to not pay attention during class. A poll was taken at Iowa State University where 20,247 out of the 25,741 enrollees were registered on Facebook (Bugeja 1). Social networking sites such as Facebook have had some negative effects in academia such as “institutions seeking to build enrollment learn that ‘technology’ rates higher than ‘rigor’ or ‘reputation’” (2), that there has been improper use of the freedom to use technology in the classroom, that employers and parents check Facebook to see what users have been doing, and that technology is an overall distraction in the classroom.

However this does not deter the increased use of technology including social media in the classroom. Social media tools have become a part of people’s lives so it is easy to integrate it in the classroom, (Brooks, 2014). However, there are many risks associated with integrating social media tools in the classroom just as there are risks associated with the traditional use of online tools. E-safety issue is one of the major risks involved in the use of social media tools in the classroom as there is a risk of putting students’ safety and privacy at risk. According to (Mackenzie, 2012), several risks involved: computer security, issues relating to antivirus, password and firewall as well as email scams.
