When the word objectify is used in conversation, the frequent meaning is the idea of viewing a person as merely an object. Yet, there is another meaning to the word objectify. It can also mean to express something abstract in a concrete form. The second definition vocalizes the purpose of art. Every artist in their endeavors seeks to articulate some abstract feeling in concrete art. Even the most mundane objects have the potential to be brought to life in artwork. Stacey Lee Weber brings mundane items to life in her exhibition Objectified. Weber uses everyday objects such as dollar bills, doorknobs, and coins to create sculptures and collages. A majority of all her works were done in series; with each piece being slightly different from the others. The pieces in this collection are collages consisting of cutout images of portraits and other images found on coins and dollar bills. As I looked at both series, I wondered if Weber created the pieces in a series on purpose to be viewed together for a progressive effect. What made Weber use everyday objects like dollar bills and coins? Perhaps. I can answer my own question. Weber may have been using her art to encourage us to appreciate money and not take it for granted. Her view of objectify is most likely the second definition I mentioned earlier. Weber's intention for the exhibition is perhaps to articulate our culture's obsession with money in art. I know for sure, in my own life, that earning money and becoming financially independent is a main goal.
