Spring break like western democracy, educational systems, philosophy, science, and the arts started in ancient Greece. Historically spring break was the time where Dionysus, the god of wine and festivities, was venerated. In this time the Grecians would have festivals with wine drinking competitions and performances. It can be said that mere details have changed in this holiday or break, but not much else. In 1936, Florida hosted the First College Coaches Swim Forum that brought many college swimmers to the area. This meeting of swimmers evolved to parties of students at the beaches and pools of Florida during this week. Spring Break kept evolving and becoming an event for college students thanks to the production of movies and songs like Spring Break starring Tom Cruise and Shelley Long or Girls Gone Wild. Spring Break is not all about the drinks and the parties. Although the evolution of Spring Break has been created around the idea of college students consuming products that are not ideal for the body or engagement in activities that are not the norm in every day life, other programs have been created not involving these ideals. These other programs range from college sponsored …show more content…
STA Travel, a students discount travel agency, states that the average spring breaker spends $1,100 for their seven-night trip. Spring break is an example of how the market tailors to college students going on trips to the Caribbean or other destinations making these places more available for students. Some examples of the shift in the market could be advertising agencies, travel agencies, and college student websites. Expedia estimates that flights for Spring Break go down as much as twenty percent. Also, studentcity.com estimates that although the spring breakers in some places in Florida are diminishing, twenty percent of students are booking flights to other beaches in the
Most students look forward to fall and spring break. It’s a time of rest and relaxation and perhaps for a few, a chance to get ahead on assignments. These breaks are often something that I personally look forward too, furthermore assuming that this is the same for other students as well.
So you decided you want to take a family vacation to Disney for a week. Before you pack your bags you need to plan everything out. You need to start saving up for a trip like this because it is not cheap. Take some money out of your income each pay and it will add up fast if you put it in the bank, it will also add some interest on it. You may be wondering, how much money needs to be saved? Well when you add your transportation, tickets, hotel, house and pet care, food, extras, and more you’ll know. If you want to save faster or can’t take a lot of money out of your income, just cut down on things. For example, buy the off-brand of things instead of the name brand things. Don’t get unnecessary things or if it can wait than wait. Pushing aside the money part, you have to figure out when the right time of the year it is to go to Disney. Is it cheaper a certain time of the year? Is air fare cheaper or gas a certain time? Should we go when school is in or out? A lot of questions to ask yourself before going. September – December, except holiday periods, second week of January – March (except holiday weekends), any rainy days, weekdays. Days not to go are all summer, thanksgiving weekend, weekend before Christmas, the week on either side of Easter and Easter weekend, other holidays, during special events. There is a value season at Disney world which is January 3-6, 10-14, 18-febuary 11, July 18-september 30, November 28- 16.
The ticket price range at Disney World is ranged from one hundred to over eight hundred dollars. Shown on the Disney World website, the annual passes are eight hundred, and the daily tickets are one hundred dollars per ticket. The price of tickets are much more expensive for non-residents of Florida. Not to mention, purchasing a plane ticket to Florida can add more to the bill. The food prices at Florida are expensive too. Tuttle, a journalist, mentions, “Food easily costs over $10 per person, per order even at Disney's to-go type restaurants, and sometimes over $50 per person for special meals hosted by characters like Ariel and Winnie the Pooh.” (par.4). Hotels at Disney World cost around one thousand dollars a night. Souvenirs can add an extra thirty dollars. On an empty stomach, Disney world serves unique food. Przygoda, a student at university South Carolina, shows a mouthwatering dessert sold at Disney World, “Kitchen Sink.” (par.2). The Kitchen Sink dessert contains a bowl of ice cream and whip cream with loads of cherries on top. Regardless of the price of the park, Disney World brings smiles to kids all over the world with their live Disney characters, and rides. Disney World holds four parks that total to over fifty rides. Porter, a journalist, shows, “If you are visiting for exactly four days you can hit every park giving each its own designated day.” (par.4). It takes more than two days to enjoy all four parks at Disney world, but perhaps even more. The parks also allows families to take pictures with Disney characters walking around the
By checking the percentage of different groups of travelers, we found out that business and leisure travelers are nearly equal to each other, but business travelers are always a little higher than leisure travelers in overall. Therefore, we were more aggressive with Miami in our price increases for the weekdays because most of our customers are not price sensitive. Based on a few results of ours, they also showed that increasing price will benefit us more in profits. For the weekends, the market size of leisure travelers is higher. In order to match with the inelastic demand, we adjusted our price based on the demand
Spring Breakers and American Honey are two films released in the 2000s that focus on teenagers and their lives in a seemingly provocative and edgy way. Spring Breakers follows four college girls, Faith, Cotty, Candy, and Brit, who embark on a journey to Florida for Spring Break. These girls go to drastic lengths to ensure the success of their trip which is full of partying, drugs, and violence. American Honey is the story of Star a teenage girl who joins a band of misfits who travel across the country selling magazines in order to escape her tumultuous home life. These two respective films share several commonalities but also diverge on several different issues. Both films have some of the cinematic tendencies used to depict certain scenes, and the types of scenes that
Whether you fly from the west coast or the east coast does make a big difference in airfare price, but on average, a single, round-trip flight costs about $700. Basic hotels run about $200 per night and minimal food costs about $50 a day, so the luxurious vacation people imagine can run upwards of a couple thousand dollars. Travelers often complain about Hawaii’s high cost of living. Everything cost an average of 30 percent more than continental United States. Since the shipping rates are so high, something as simple as a pack of hamburger buns costs almost six dollars. This is due to the fact that everyday items, such as groceries, is imported from the
But March is also the disappearance of cold and dark winters. The Winter Break has ended and students continue on working until March Break, and right after the March Break school starts to become more serious and important. But before all that, why do we only get a week of March Break, we’re tired of school and we want to really relax before we head for the difficult part of school. We should at least deserve two weeks of March Break, just like the Winter Break, and the March Break is the last Break for the school year. The one week of March Break narrows us to limited activities, which is not enjoyable.
Mary Wollstonecraft, a women’s rights advocate in the year 1792 summed it up perfectly when she said, “I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves.” She is describing the fight within every woman in the Feminist Movement that began in the 1700’s and extended throughout the late 20th century. This powerful motion was a drive to address the debated issues of reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, women’s suffrage, sexual harassment, and sexual violence. As time has passed, feminists have pushed extremely hard to gain equal rights and respect from their male counterparts. Unfortunately in today’s world, society still puts an emphasis on a women’s exterior beauty. They emphasize it in magazines, television commercials, and even the infamous beauty pageant. The industry of beauty pageants is growing rapidly, jeopardizing the continuous work of many women’s rights advocates, throwing away the continuing efforts for equal rights (Miss America, 2011).
Each year, America’s travel and tourism industry generates approximately $1.5 trillion dollars in economic output, or about 2.6% of the country’s gross domestic product (Select USA, 2016). Nearly 20% of this economic activity is directly related to accommodations, which serve the short term lodging needs of pleasure and business travelers. Unlike other American economic sectors, this lodging industry is a highly fragmented, diversified market with an incredible variety of suppliers. Temporary overnight lodging can range from undeveloped campsites, hostels, and capsule hotels all the way up to mansions and incredibly luxurious five store hotels. Price ranges run the gamut from just a few dollars a night to thousands of
Southeastern University is a private, Co-ed, Christian university. SEU’s main focus is to equip their students to be a next generation of leaders so that they can enter the real world as influential servants to their careers and communities. Southeastern university offers a plentiful amount of study programs, even the program I am interested in which is Human services. I selected this school First because it is a Christian college, and Second because of the programs of study. I chose to go to a Christian college because I grew up in a Christian household and because I believe in Jesus. I also chose Southeastern University because of the programs of study. SEU was one of the few colleges that had a program of study that I was interested in.
"The only ones who don't lose are the upper 10 to 15 percent of the student body. Those tend to be gifted, college-bound, they're natural learners who will learn wherever they are" (Smyth 7). This is a statement from an article written by Julie Carr Smyth about how much knowledge is lost over summer because of the amount of education-free time during the break. Smyth's article also state so that "The National Summer Learning Association cites decades of research that shows students' test scores are higher in the same subjects at the beginning of the summer than at the end" (Smyth 6). If the National Summer Learning Association already has research showing that knowledge is lost over summer break, why do we still have such a long break in between school years? All students would agree that every school year goes on the same as the one before: you start the school year reviewing everything you previously learned, then you spend the rest of the year learning new lessons just for them to slip out of your mind again when you get back to school the next year after summer break. It seems as if the only activities that students remember from their summer breaks are the parties, vacations, and Netflix series they spent their time on. That is not how it should be. Shortening the gap between the summer school months will in turn strengthen student education. It won't allow them to lose as much previous education as a long summer break would. A longer school year will in turn decrease education loss, increase productivity year round in students, and provide the simple necessities of daily life such as food for some unfortunate students.
Because Dionysus is the Greek god of two disparate, popular, humanly things: wine and theater, he was substantially honored in Greek culture; the Festival of Dionysus took place annually to praise and celebrate the god. Dionysus, also called Bacchos, was one of the most important gods in everyday life because he was a merry god who inspired poetry and theater which were important in Greek society (Sacks). However, because he signified wine as well, he was a cruel god; wine was seen as something that made people happy but also drunk and barbaric. Greeks wanted to celebrate both of these ideas together, so the Festival of Dionysus was held in honor of him. It took place in Athens in the spring when vines started to bear leaves because stories
This leaves the American consumer confidence laying low, and people are being more cautious on their spending and not splurging. This ties in with the pace of recovery for the hotel industry. But a stronger hit came to the industry, when the trend developed in the market for substitutes to hotels and motels. The consumer due to the economic decline has developed a taste for an economical traveling experience, these substitutes offer cost undercuts. According to the United States Department of Labour, the unemployment rate in the US averaged to 8.9% in 2011. Higher unemployment rates strains discretionary spending, which in turn reduces the leisure travel by the customers. Sluggish wage gains and credit crunch are all expected to keep customers relatively cautious in 2012. Thus, a weak economic outlook for the important markets of Hilton Worldwide would put pressure on its top line and bottom line growth (Hilton Worldwide, 12). The pricing factor is almost hard to match by the hotel industry, the consumer is becoming more demanding but also exigent in terms of low pricing. Switching costs range from negligible to high, but a factor that motels can’t substitute are the various benefits including spas, restaurants, or a community holiday feel brought with the package of any chosen hotel/motel. But the consumers in the US for example see the switch as more of a necessity rather than
During the spring semester, there are two more large gaps between breaks, one of which is also over two months long. Although weekends do help, these are often used for studying and homework and do little to ease the students' stress. Many students begin to dislike their classes because of the stress they cause, and as a result, some put less effort into their studies. Breaks allow students some time off from their classes to relax so that they can come back refreshed. Another reason breaks are important is that they give students time to spend with their families.
One piece of evidence against summer vacation is, the rapid growth of the economies and the rising academic standards of countries such as China and India, two countries with a rigorous academic schedule. Chinese students have consistently scored higher in areas of math and science than American students, providing reason to believe our lack of schooling is ineffective compared to others. However, as author Benjamin Studebaker quotes, “But think about how the Chinese economy grows. This is not a country that has been inventing fabulous things that we all want to buy. Americans and Europeans make products in China because the labor there is cheap. The products are designed by Americans and Europeans, it's American and European intellectual
