The career I chose and decided to do research on is Sports Broadcaster. Sports broadcasters provide live on-air coverage of sports events to capture the feeling of the game for viewers and listeners. The broadcasters can either be on the television, radio, the internet, or live in the stadium, sports broadcasters are responsible for sharing commentary, game analysis, and personal experiences with viewers. They keep fans engaged and entertained throughout the entire event.

Sports broadcasters have a decent salary that outpaces the earning potential for many other broadcasting industries. Sportscasters are given a good amount of autonomy and independence in choosing their own creative material. Since sport teams are playing across the world, sport broadcasters have flexible options for job locations. On the negative side sport broadcasters must be prepared for competition in a slow job market that isn’t seeing much growth. Some broadcasters might feel pressured to only report accurate facts and try to get high ratings for their station. On a typical day, sports broadcasters have to research game statistics, analyze sports news stories, learn about the history of sports, write scripts and articles, read from a teleprompter, announcing play-by-plays, and offering their game predictions on the air. Some broadcasters may be asked to interview coaches, athletes, and other team officials as part of the pre- or post- game sports coverage.
The education qualifications may vary but, most sport broadcasters have earned at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4 year higher learning institution. Before I conducted this media analysis about women in sports and sport broadcasting, I hypothesized the obvious - that more male sports would be in the media, and that there would be more male sports broadcasters as well. Through my observations I did find that the sports arena and sports broadcasting sphere are male dominated. However, I also found that although there are not many stories about women, there has been a steady progression and magazines like Sports Illustrated are becoming bold enough to highlight women athletes in a magazine that is targeted towards a male audience. Although women still have a long way to go, they are making some headway into the male-dominated sports arena.
I want to be sportscaster when I grow up because I would like to discuss events with proffesionals. I also couldn’t see myself in life without being connected to sports. Also it seems really cool to be a sportscaster at ESPN because it looks like a cool place to work there.

There are a lot of sports broadcasters in the world and almost all of them have their own way of doing their job well. Now there are a lot of things that sports broadcasters do to make themselves good but the key points to being a sports broadcaster are to do the correct research, to present themselves in a professional manner and to put in the extra effort to be that much better.
Athletes are being paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to entertain us. They work less hours than the average person and make considerably more. Athletes all around the world are paid handsomely because they are talented and have extensive knowledge of their sport. But, is that knowledge and talent really worth what they are earning every season? Compared to some of the most common and needed professions are athletes really earning their paychecks? It’s time to take a deep look into what requirements besides natural ability athletes really need? How many hours are they expected to put in a week and what their job really is.
Can women's sports establish itself as a topic of on-going media and journalism curiosity? Currently TV stations do minimal coverage of women's sports, while newspapers and magazines do just a little bit better. In a recent interview with Gary Webb, a sports writer for The Spectrum, he says that "the people have demonstrated that there is an audience that loves hearing about women athletes. After all, they are somebody's kids, sisters, and moms". I learned that these sports writers love to cover women's games, especially girls highschool basketball games. Gary said that he would rather watch a Parowan-Beaver girls game over the boys anyday. Karen Winegar, staff writer for the The Star Tribune of Minnesota said., "Portrayal of female athletes is improving, but despite increasing interest and participation, their sports are getting no more coverage than they got five years ago" (1A+). Women's sports participation will surely continue to grow in the future, so the media and journalists better be prepared to increase their coverage accordingly.

Most people watch some form of sports, whether it be the Olympics or the highlights on ESPN. The NBA and NHL playoffs are underway and it seems to be the only news on ESPN. There is almost no coverage of the WNBA playoffs or any female athletics. Tennis is one of the only big sports on ESPN for women. While during the Olympics, the coverage seems to be non-stop and close to equal.
Professional athletes play in front of an audience and get paid for it. Fans like seeing these athletes perform their best so much that they are willing to pay to watch. Professional athletes are performers or entertainers. They must perform well in each game or risk losing. If they don 't play well, they won 't last long. The work of professional athletes is hardworking and at times demanding. This is both physical and mental stress. They must be in the best possible shape. Athletes usually work out all year, both during the season and in the off season in order to be able to start for their team. They must be able to perform their jobs at the highest level at all times. Professional athletes also face the constant threat of injuries that could potentially end their careers. For these and other reasons, this kind of job can be quite stressful. During the season, athletes often practice more than 50 hours a week. They may have other duties related to the team as well for instance, going to meetings or watching films about the opposition. Athletes have to move to the place where their team is located. If the manager decides to trade them, they have to most likely to move again. Being a professional athletes they often have curfews and other restrictions on the things they do. They are not allowed to just leave the job at the office like workers in other jobs can. That’s why the athletes receive what they get, because of what they do when they need to
Those reasons are the uses and gratification model provided by McQuail, Blumler, and Brown. People want to get fulfillment after watching a show or in this case a sports broadcast. They wanted to achieve something like making sure their team is doing well or all the players are healthy. In the case of ESPN, there are two ways to view this information. The viewer can either watch the broadcast and be entertained by the broadcasters and see the plays.
Almost all employers of journalists, no matter the specific field, require a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, communications, or a similarly related field. For a sports journalist specifically, it’s essential to major or at least complete a minor or similar major with a concentration in sports journalism. Some of the top sports journalism schools include Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, Penn State University, the University of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University, and Hofstra University. There are also a couple of universities (Ashford University and Colorado State University) that provide online sport journalism undergraduate and graduate programs. Courses within all of these universities’ programs include introduction to the sports industry, sports media, sports writing and reporting, broadcasting, play-by-play announcing, and public relations. Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person will make in their life. Most people try to pick the career with the best financial gain and something they would like to do for the rest of their life. Foremost it is wise to see what the job entails. Sport Management is perfect for those who enjoy helping and working with people, especially when dealing with sports. The next part of the decision-making process is looking through the various schooling and training required. Lastly, take into consideration the advantages and disadvantages. Usually with great salaries comes a big responsibility with high stress. “The sports industry in the U.S. is a $200-billion-dollar-plus powerhouse, with superstar athletes, lucrative endorsement deals, and all the free press an ego can handle” (Lawyue 1). The profession of a sport management professional has a very specific work description, requires specific schooling and training, and comes with a variety of benefits and disadvantages.
There are a lot of massive spectacles like the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA play-offs, the Olympic Games, College Football Games. Each of these sports activities takes in many millions of dollars from television revenues and dominates national sports news for days or weeks.
Journalism as a reporter career requires classes that should be taken while she is in high school. The classes are: English, Journalism, History, Social Studies, Communication, Typing, and Computer Science. Since all these classes have been taken, it will be good also to take speech courses because it will help her to feel comfortable in interviewing skills, which are required to be a successful reporter. Later in college it would be good to take pre courses such as a foreign language, Math and Science (Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center).
