A theatre play can be described as characters acting out a scene that they have memorized and brought to life. In improvisation, there is a character that is played out but not in the conventional sense. The characters play within the setting and do not memorize scripts but instead act according to the circumstances. which makes improvisation appealing in that aspect. Viola Spolin makes these points very clear by presenting the Point Of Concentration. Keith Johnstone believes that improvisation occurs through status placed with one another. Each author has their way to go about improvisation, both, however, make important contributions to the art of improvisation. Spolin centers her beliefs through the idea of the point of concentration. …show more content…
POC also gives the improviser a set of guidelines to abide by so that their creativity does not become destructive.(Spolin,2000). One of the many games we played in the classroom emphasized this particular point. I do not recall the name but we would move imaginary furniture and the point was to move it from point A to point B there was, however, an obstacle. The obstacle demonstrated the POC. The obstacle allowed for flexibility with the exercise and creating a way in which to move, but with the obstacle present our creative did not destroy the purpose of the game. I found that moving the furniture was not as easy it seemed because the obstacle sometimes made it difficult to move about freely. POC furthermore allows for individuals to interact with each other so they can solve the problem (Spolin, 2000). Improvisation …show more content…
Those individuals who are low status tend to accept where the high-status individuals block. (Johnstone, 2014). The high-status individual will always block unless they see that they can control the situation.(Johnstone, 2014). This can be seen in many aspects of life to be true as well but more notably in one of the games, we played in class. Where one of us was a low-status and the other person was a high status the person with low status I would avoid confrontation and eye contact. My posture was hunched over as well. When I was higher status I stood tall with the chin pointed outward while demonstrating confidence. In improvisation high-status players, however, are afraid of being humiliated so if they go down so does their partners they improvise their downfall as well as their partners.(Johnstone, 2014). For example, in the yes, and game I paired low-status and everything that I would say was disregarded and replaced with a new idea and when the higher status felt as though they could not control the situation they would get mad and disregard my ideas to humiliate me instead. Improvisation can occur through the use of status because it also fits into our daily life, everyone carries a status with them whether it is implied or
In this essay I shall concentrate on the plays 'Road' by Jim Cartwright and 'Blasted' by Sarah Kane with specific reference to use of language and structure of dialogue as examples of dramatic techniques.
“Devised theatre can start from anything. It is determined and defined by a group of people who set up an initial framework or structure to explore and experiment with ideas, images, concepts, themes, or specific stimuli that might include music, text, objects, paintings, or movement.” (Alison Oddey 1). Devised theatre, also called collaborative creation, is a form of theatre in which the script is created through a collaborative process with the actors and the playwright, rather than the traditional method of theatre with a premade script. Devised theatre is created through the process, collaboration, and multi-vision of the group. Similar to improvisational theatre, a devised theatre play is created in the rehearsal process from the performers interacting with each other. By the time the devised play is performed the work is a cohesive piece that is, for the most part, set in stone. This form of theatre is a modern form of theatre, that came about from the collaboration of many different type of artists, because of the need of the performers to have some input into what they are performing. The devised theatre form is most utilized in the USA, Great Britain, and Australia, but especially in our country. Devised theatre utilizes physical movements, rather than focusing on only the language.

Brecht argues that the ultimate purpose of play is to induce pleasure and to entertain, and that--because of this purpose--play needs no justification. Plays should not be simply copied from or seen through older performances, but need to develop on their own to better relate to a new audience. Through the use of alienation which aims to make the familiar unfamiliar, play and theatre can be seen under a new perspective, and the actor can feel more free to perform under a new guise.
Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation where immediate action is taken when composing music without any preparation. By improvising, one is taking music to a new, personal level with great creativity and using your imagination to be free and express your emotions and ideas.
As we already know Robinson defines creativity as “imaginative processes with outcomes that are original and of value” (Sandri 767). One can argue that creativity studies equip students with knowledge of creativity which in return makes them more creative when processing ideas and to produce ideas that have value and original than meaningless new ideas. With that in mind, we can infer that without creativity studies to enable the students with the necessities that they require to provide valuable ideas. We would end up with even more complex problems and situations we won’t be able to solve. Not to mention that creativity studies educate students to categorize “problems as needing a solution that requires either action, planning or invention” (Pappano par 18). With this kind of knowledge students are able to be more creative and at the same time solve a problem with so many different approaches. This can require either taking an action, plan the problem from a different perspective or maybe even invent the problem. It is important that we recognize how and what creativity studies have contributed to our education or knowledge and what implications we have seen so far by using
According to Erving Goffman’s performances theory, the way we interpret ourselves is similar to a theater in which we are all actors on a stage playing a variety of roles. The way in which we act in front of a group of observers or audience is our performance. Goffman introduces the idea that we are always performing for our observers like actors performing on a stage. The impression that we give off to an audience in a scenario is the actor’s front. You can compare an actor’s front to a script. Certain scenarios have scripts that suggest the actor how he or she should behave in every situation. The setting for the performances includes the location and scenery in which the acing takes place.
Contact improvisation is a modern dance form where two people move while maintaining a connection. It originated from portions of Steve Paxton’s movement studies, which he began in 1972 at Oberlin College. As with every major event that happens in the world, the introduction and investigation of contact improvisation affected everyone in society one way or another.
Higher social status or power and commonalities between the individuals may explain why they are willing to do so. In attempt to demonstrate associative behavior, these individuals will partake in accommodation. According to the Communication Accommodation Theory, the interactants converge either upward or downward, unimodal or multimodal, or symmetrical or asymmetrical in order to adapt to the conversational setting (Zhang & Imamura, 2017). For instances, adults would speak slowly and use simple vocabulary when talking with children. In A Class Divided, the teacher would converge downward for her third-grade students to understand the
The first main area of art and reality colliding in the play is the existence of characters who are referred to as Characters. Pirandello stretches the bounds of meta-theater by having actors portray Characters who swear they are not actors, when faced with other actors playing actual actors and a Director. The layers of unraveling of reality are astounding. The Characters must try and convince not only the Actors and the Producer of their true nature, but also the audience. Pirandello must convey his beliefs about the essence of art through the mouths of Characters seemingly unattached to the actuality of the theater around them. In the play, the Producer acts on stage in place of the author, questioning the sincerity and the true nature of the Characters, who become his r...
Social Interaction is an essential element when understanding the role of a human in society and how a human conducts himself or herself. A key term for this interaction is a person’s status(a recognizable social position that an individual occupies. Page 128) in that society. Each person within that status has a role (the duties and behaviors expected of someone who holds a particular status. Page 128) to complete during their social interactions. However, if a person cannot complete the roles that are assigned to them in that individual status then they experience role strain (the incompatibility among roles corresponding to a single status. Page 128). One example from the book is a professor who needs to keep writing research and lectures
In this paper, I will be focusing briefly on my knowledge and understanding of the concept of Applied theatre and one of its theatre form, which is Theatre in Education. The term Applied Theatre is a broad range of dramatic activity carried out by a crowd of diverse bodies and groups.
Improvisation is the ability to create an unplanned and spontaneous musical excerpt, with the level proficiency being dependent upon prior knowledge. In order to understand the logistics behind improvisation, we must establish the concepts behind it, why we learn and are intrigued by improvisation, whether it is practiced patterns or learned procedures, and whether or not changing from a familiar key to an unfamiliar key limits ones’ ability to improvise. While an understanding can be established, there is yet to be a general consensus within this field of study. The ongoing debate is in regard to whether or not improvisation
They change their behavior to be accepted by the majority in the group. They want to be seen as ordinary and do away with any unique characteristics in them. They want to remain as plain as possible so as not to offend or be mocked by their associates in the group. What they forget is that, they destroy their gifts and talents when they conform; they are fall into the trap of social conformity and set themselves up to be controlled. Then they end up minimum actualizing their maximum potential. One should understand that the central role of social conformity is to control individuals, but through boldness and self-creating, one can resist
“Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” ― Meryl Streep. I love exploring and gaining knowledge about the beautiful craft of acting. During my journey of being an actor, I notice there are two types of actors: stage and film. Stage and film actors are different in their times of rehearsal, their relationship with an audience, and their emotional challenges.
