A dark figure swings from the trees, more are following. All of a sudden, they stop and hang by their tails, looking like a giant spider. They all pick plants and insects off the top of the pond, eating until they are full. The dark figure is a spider monkey, a critically threatened species. Most are endangered. 1. When they hang by their tails, they look like giant spiders. Spider monkeys love to hang by their tails. They look like giant spiders for many reasons. The most important reason they hang by their tails is because they catch their food that way. They hang over water to catch bugs and drink water. They will also sometimes eat hanging upside down. Some other reasons are to look out for predators, scare predators, and sneak up on their prey. Also, they just want to have fun a with one another. Hanging by their tails is crucial to their survival and to have fun. 2. Ateles means imperfect. There are many reasons why spider monkeys might seem imperfect. Is it because they have no thumbs? Is it because their tails are longer than their bodies? There are answers to those questions. Their tails are used as a fifth limb. They use it for balance atop the trees. They hang by their tails to have fun and just chill and relax. Despite not having thumbs, they can grip easily on trees. Spider monkeys can still groom without thumbs. …show more content…
They have very long arms and legs for racing across trees to escape predators. Also, the rings around their eyes are large. They use this technique to show off. Now do you think they still are imperfect? 3. Their diet consist of a large variety of food. Some may say they eat too many different things. Whether it’s fruit or flowers, roots or honey, a spider monkey can always find food somewhere. Since they live up in trees for most of the time, they also eat bark and wood and rarely small animals. For a snack, they share some nuts for protein. These monkeys are omnivores like most humans (not all), which means they eat both meat and plants and grains. If there is no food in their territory (which is unlikely), either one monkey, a group, or even the whole band will leave in search of food. That is how dependent spider monkeys are on food and surviving in the wild. 4. Spider monkeys are surprisingly friendly and smart. Spider monkeys use kindness and intelligence that will surprise most people. They use many techniques that us humans would call smart. For example, when humans used to shoot at them with arrows, when a monkey got injured, others would come and help get the arrows out of them. If spider monkeys get separated, at least one will find out one is missing from the group and will call out in search for them. Then, other monkeys pursue in finding that monkey. When they are threatened by humans, they will drop dead branches on them from the treetops. They will also call out if they see a predator to save everyone. Also, they hug each other with their tails when others feel sad or lonely. 5. They are critically endangered. All spider monkey species are critically threatened.
Most are also endangered. There are only about 2,000 spider monkeys in the whole world! Some of the reasons why are that they are still hunted by local people for their meat and coat. Some spider monkeys even get malaria, which can kill off their band. Also, spider monkeys are very noisy, which gives away where they are hiding, even though they will give off many different types of warning calls. They are losing a lot of territory due to deforestation. It doesn’t seem like a lot because forests are so big, but little by little, there might not be any spider monkeys
left. Glossary Band: a group of monkeys Deforestation: clearing a wide area of trees. Malaria: a fever caused by a parasite that invades the red blood cells, the parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes Pursue: to follow someone or something in order to catch or find them
While reading Saint Monkey, there were several parts that reminded me of “Trilobites.” Saint Monkey tells the story of Audrey and Caroline living in a small town wanting to become jazz singers out of their hometown. When Audrey’s dad died is what really made me connect this story to “Trilobites.” One of the main parts of “Trilobites” is when Collie’s dad died and how it affects the rest of the story. One should realize how Saint Monkey and “Trilobites,” are similar through the characters and conflicts and how conflicts throughout the stories affect the characters and what writing style the author chooses to use.
The destruction of their habitat and destruction are the two great threats to the gorillas. The places where they are found are poor and densely populated. The land that is set aside for gorillas is being taken over by agriculture. The wire traps that poachers set out for antelope usually end up catching gorillas instead. People kill them for their heads and hands as trophies. The western lowland gorilla is listed as an endangered species.
The second step shown in these monkey’s evolutionary progress is that now these animals appear to be goal oriented. Like mentioned previously, these monkeys had been working for themselves. They would do what ever they could to benefit themselves, get food, and have a nice place to sleep. Yet, once the changes begin and they have a leader, the monkeys begin to act as a group. They are more coordinated and it seems that their living style has changed from anarchy to monarchy. They attack a larger animal and kill it as a group. In turn, the raw meat is then split between the monkeys and everyone gets a share.
They have wide chests and their arms are longer than their legs. Chimpanzees’ hands have four long fingers plus an opposable thumb. Their feet have five toes which includes an opposable big toe. Chimpanzees’ can grasp things with both their hands and their feet. Male chimpanzees are larger than female chimpanzees and are slightly sexually dimorphic. Chimpanzees are quadrupeds that typically walk using the soles of feet and the knuckles of their hands. They sometimes walk upright only when they need to use their arms to carry things but this is a rare occurrence. Chimps are also good at brachiating and climbing trees which is where they spend most of their time even when they sleep. Their dental formula is 2.1.2.3. Chimpanzees’ have y5/x4 molars, making them frugivores, and a diastema to fit their upper canines. Their diet includes fruit, leaves, flowers, seeds, smaller mammals, birds, insects, and grubs. When chimps aren’t resting, they can be very active. I enjoyed watching the Chimpanzees’ swing on the ropes and climb up and down the trees. Chimpanzees are
If you see a group of monkeys casually walking around in a grassland environment (like those shown on the right), you can be sure that they are from the Old World. Many of the larger New World monkeys have prehensile, or grasping, tails that are capable of being used as strong "third hands" for holding onto branches and supporting their bodies. None of the Old World monkeys or apes has this capability. Many species of Old World monkeys have ischial callosities , or hairless callous pads, on their rumps which may be adaptations for long periods of sitting or sleeping on rough branches and rocks.
Two of the most intriguing primates on the primate-rich island of Borneo are the proboscis monkey Nasalis larvatus and the orangutan Pongo pygmeus (Tisdell & Nantha, 2007). The proboscis monkey is restricted to Borneo whereas the orangutan occurs both in Borneo and in Sumatra. The proboscis monkey is classified under the one of the largest and most diverse primate families distributed throughout Africa and Asia (Sha, Matsuda & Bernard, 2011), family Cercopithecidae or Old World Monkeys. The characteristics of proboscis monkeys are the morphology of the species, the feeding ecology and the preference of their habitat (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

The class spiders belong to is Arachnida. Class Arachnida contains one of the defining traits of a spider, having eight legs. Other species included in this class include scorpions, tics, and harvestman. The order that defines spiders is Araneae which contains three suborders that are Mesothelae, Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae. A specific characteristic to this order is that these species bodies are segmented into two distinct sections, the cephalothorax (anterior) and abdomen (posterior). Finally, the genus of the South Black Widow spider is Latrodectus. This genus is famous for having spiders with a poisonous bite (Preston-Mafham 1984).
Arachnida is a subphylum of Arthropoda, consisting of over 100 000 species, many of them being parasites which can carry disease. They are found in all environments, and mostly have eight legs, which is a feature, together with the fact that they do not have wings or antennae, often used to distinguish them from the other subphyla, though there are exceptions. They include spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. Their bodies are divided up into three parts: the cephalothorax, the opisthosoma and the thorax, and use a type of lung for gas exchange. Most Arachnids are carnivorous, and eat pre-digested insects and other small animals. They reproduce using internal reproduction usually lay eggs, except for the scorpion which bears living young. The word ‘Arachnid’ comes from the Greek word ‘Arachne’ meaning ‘spider’.
Numerous Macaw species are presently endangered in nature. While the Scarlet Macaws aren’t an endangered species as of now, they are still at danger because of a blend of components. They confront environment misfortune through deforestation, and get captured from the wild for pet exchange.
Since Sony received the rights to the Spider-Man franchise they have gone on to produce two different versions of the wall crawler, Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-man directed by Sam Raimi was released in 2002 and fans instantly were glued to watching the hero on the big screen for the very first time. Critics loved it like The New York Daily quote “Spider-Man is an almost-perfect extension of the experience of reading comic-book adventures.”Due to its success Sony went on to produce two more movies under the title in 2004 and lastly in 2007. With disputes over the script and release date of the fourth installment Sony went in a completely new direction releasing The Amazing Spider-Man series directed by Marc Webb in 2012 leaving
The Ape Cave is located on the south side of Mt St Helens. You must drive to highway 503 past the town of Cougar. The cave is open all year round, however, the parking lot in winter could be snow covered. The Ape Cave was formed from lava that had flowed down from the volcano through steams over 2000 years ago. As the outer layer cooled, the inner area stayed hot and the lava continued to flow for months possibly up to a year after an eruption. The lava tube is the third longest known tube in the continental United States.
Almost everyone in the world has a favorite children story or cartoon thar he or she used to read or watch. When i was child I used to watch Tarzan cartoon every night before i go to sleep. Sometimes my parents would read me Tarzan's story when they had free time. There are many social science themes in Tarzan's story which are friendship, love, enemy, and braveness.
The research concluded that spiders which were able to camouflage had better hunting success than those who could not. This was to be expected and did not seem to offer any new or valuable research to the scientific community. One interesting thing is it does show that these spiders were aware of their surroundings and able to change their behavior based on this principal. This shows some intelligence or understanding on the jumping spiders part. Yet there was no control group to compare this to and each spider was only used once. This paper also shows the difference between male and female behaviors but more experiments will have to be done to corroborate these
