On January 28, 1986, Ronald Reagan, the President who takes on the grievances of America and establishes hope, in his inspiring speech entitled the “Speech on the Challenger Disaster,” is able to guide the United States to prosperity. He guides the United States. by emphasizing the courage and bravery of the Challenger crew, then he drives the focus to the good that NASA allows us to accomplish, and finally tells the people that the crew dies doing what they loved. Through Reagan's use of Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals, tone, and rhetorical devices, he is able to inspire hope in the people instead of the failure of NASA. Reagan is able to persuade the public to hold on to their hope by using Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals. Ethos, or credibility, Reagan touches the people of the United States because he expresses grief and sorrow in his speech. After the disaster, Reagan uses tone effectively to commemorate the deaths of the crew. “They had a special grace” or “your loved ones were loving and brave”(3) are examples of how Reagan sympathizes with the mourning families. This tone not only allows the families to grieve their losses, it also provides them with the opportunity to feel proud about their children’s accomplishments. Furthermore, Reagan uses tone to carry the people’s afflictions after the Challenger crash and change it into confidence. The people of the United States look at this crash as a failure, but Reagan turns it around when he says, “what happened today does nothing to diminish it”(6) and “we will continue to follow them” (5). Reagan’s use of tone allows him to inspire the United States to keep moving forward after the flop. This hope is what makes Reagan’s speech so successful. Tone and rhetorical appeals guide the speech but Reagan’s use of rhetorical devices is what makes the speech so successful. Reagan uses figurative language to persuade his audience that failure is the first step to success. Through rhetorical devices he is able to encourage the people of the United States to look what the crew is accomplishing. He states the following “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this pain with all the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.” Using the words “Nancy and I” and “We” make the speech personal and shows that he too is affected by the event. He offers his condolences to the families of the crew. "We mourn their loss as a nation together. The families of the seven, we cannot bear as you do the full impact of this tragedy. But we feel the loss and we are thinking about you so very much." He commemorated the seven heroes who had fallen that morning in route to outer space; he expressed gratitude to NASA for their past developments and encouraged further explorations. Ronald Reagan was a great communicator, a charismatic persuader whose words delivered focus of the message through utilization of persuasive symbols. The attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7th, 1941, was and still is an event that will forever be deep-rooted in the mind of every American. After the tragic surprise attack on American soil by the Japanese, Americans throughout the country were looking for a sense of unity. The President at the time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, recited a moving and powerful speech the day after the attack. Although the speech was specifically targeted at the Members of Congress in an effort to persuade the declaration of war with Japan, the speech was also written to be televised to the entire country. When the attack comes to mind, the powerful speech that mustered the nation together slowly follows. Every famous speech uses specific rhetorical devices in order to persuade and convince the intended audience. FDR’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos, successfully triggered the emotions of all U.S citizens and effectively provoked the idea of America declaring war on the Empire of Japan.

FDR uses pathos to connect with the audience on a personal level, but more importantly to influence the listeners. FDR uses emotional appeal effectively by his particular choice in words and the tone of his voice during the delivery. While presenting, he showed anger, sorrow, and patriotism, standing as a representative of the United States, while relating with each individual American. First he says that America was ‘suddenly and deliberately attacked’, sparking the audience’s anger as they realize America was targeted with no warning. He then states that America was deceived and ‘under the impression that [Japan's] emperor [was] looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific’. Another way Reagan uses emotional appeals in his speech at the Brandenburg Gate is through the reoccurring theme of good versus evil. The basic idea behind this theme is that America and other Western nations are good and right, while the Soviet Union is evil and wrong. However, unlike his speech to the National Association of Evangelicals in 1983, President Reagan does not come out and blatantly say that the Soviet Union is an “evil empire”. Instead, he gives examples that serve to prove his point without explicitly making any risky statements. In a person’s lifetime, many things can happen including death. In 1986 seven individuals, Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnic, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe, lost their lives doing what they loved most. The tragedy of the shuttle challenger brought much pain to the nation that day. Along with the pain comes grieving. The nation grieved the loss of these seven wonderful individuals and hoped to find peace and comfort for the days to come. As Ronald Reagan prepared to give the state of the union address, things changed for worse, he unexpectedly had to give a speech on a horrific event. Reagan was devastated at the loss of the seven men and women that were on that space shuttle challenger.
The message, however, showed no signs of the forthcoming attack on Pearl Harbor. The President also creates emotions in the audience through his use of tone and emphasis. His tone is stern yet caring, showing that he believes in the American people. It also shows that while the United States was attacked, he has faith that the American troops, citizens, and government will rally behind him to terminate the impending threat. His emphasis throughout his speech shows his most important points.
By using descriptive language and connecting, it explains the triumphs of man and the recovery the country will have to take. Words such as sacrifice, understanding, and exploration help enforce that this event would not stop the process of evolution in science. The speech uses spiritual phenomenons to help the mournful accept what has happened. For example, it compares Armstrong and Aldrin to heros in the constellations, and that their sacrifice would bind the brotherhood of man. The Speech also appeals to Ethos because it is trying to reinforce the belief in America and the belief in Mankind as a whole. It states, “they know that there is hope in mankind in their sacrifice” (Source B), further describing that Mankind’s search for the unknown will not falter because of this setback.
