Speaking in Tongues, written by ZZ Packer, is a short story about a young girl who demonstrates extreme character change throughout the story. Tia Townsend starts out as an innocent, conservative church-going girl who grows and evolves into a rebellious teen. Through tone, setting, and a variety of metaphors, we are able to see how the different aspects of Tia’s life contribute to the overall plot. By connecting with the reader, Packer truly demonstrates how the struggles and experiences Tia went through ultimately shaped her as a character. The story begins with the protagonist, Tia, and her best friend, Marcelle, hanging out after Sunday School as usual, watching and gossiping about the other girls. However, this Sunday was different as Tia is struggling with the message from her class. The readings from that morning showed how conservative Tia’s life was at this point. In addition to these traditional readings, many of the girls in Tia’s class were beginning to speak in tongues; however, Tia is unable to master this skill. “You could only truly speak in tongues when all the worldly matters were emptied from your mind, or else there was no room for God.” Tia is constantly trying to achieve this connection, but is …show more content…

The story started off with Tia being a conservative, religious, “good-girl.” She transforms to an “independent,” young woman as she sets off to Georgia, then into a rebellious teen by the end of the story. This change starts with her personal struggle to speak in tongues like the rest of the girls her age. She feels unaccepted and judged in her church society. When confronted, Tia uses her best friend, Marcelle, to boost her esteem since she also lacks that special ability. I think Packer uses this to compare and contrast Tia’s character traits.
