Sparta was a key city state which was located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula in southern Greek, which today is referred to as Laconia. Sparta is historically known for their strong military training, warfare tactics, and numerous victories. This city state included full citizens known as the Spartans, the helots, and the Perioeci. The men of Sparta had a main obligation to become strong warriors, fight with their brothers, and protect against any invasions or attacks. The helots where owned by city state of Sparta. This means that the people of Sparta believed in not one, but multiple gods. During this time in Greek the primary god was Zeus. Zeus was the god of the sky as well as the ruler of Olympian Gods. The Spartans participated in religious holidays including Carneia, Enyalia, Gymnopaedia and Hyacinths. During the Carneia believed to happen in the month of August, Spartans were not allowed to declare war during this time. Carneia was celebrated in honor of Apollo Carneios. Spartans would chase a designated man and if caught, it meant good luck for the coming harvest. The Enyalia was an annual festival in which its main objective was a spring purification march of the army between the two halves of a scarified dog. Gymnopaedia involved the youth of Sparta, in which they would display their athletic and strong bodies, as well as dance. This was done to highlight and appreciate the beauty of Sparta. Helots were the original residents of the Laconian plain, the term Helots often means ‘prisoner of war’ and that is a good representation of what the Helots were, prisoners or slaves. Owned as property of the state they were assigned land that was owned by individual Spartans, they worked, lived on and made profit from the agricultural products derived from the land though a half of any harvest was directly given to the landowner. Athens was a much more superior polis compared to Sparta because the Athenians invented new ideas and creations that supported the people, such as democracy, the Athenians led the Delian League, and Sparta created the Peloponnesian League after the Athenians created their alliance, and the Athenians changed the ways of their government many times to suit the people, and the Spartans did not.
In early Sparta, slaves typically came in the form of servants called helots. In discussing the concept of helots, the novel mentions that they were “…the serf class that the Lakedaemonians had created from the inhabitants of Messenia and Helos after they in centuries past had conquered and enslaved them.” (Pressfield, 12). While the male citizens of Sparta trained for war and went off to war to protect their city-state, the helots were left to tend the fields and produce food for the Spartans. All descendants of the former inhabitants of Messenia and Helos were automatically born into life as a helot; in addition, people born in other lands who later chose – or, in the case of Xeones, were forced – to migrate into Sparta were also considered helots. These helots of foreign-birth, who were certainly not eligible for citizenship, were often feared to be informants among their fellow helots. Helots were all expected to contribute equally to the labor and tillage of the soil, and fellow helots ensured a difficult life for those who did not. During Xeones’ time as a helot slave, both of these helot ‘issues’ are realized. Due to extensive injuries from having nails sent through his hands in his past, Xeones was relatively incapable of performing farm tasks. The social structure of Sparta consisted of the Helots, Perioikoi and Spartiates. Enslaved in the wars of Messenia were the Helots, considered as the property of the state, and released on rare occasion as Neodamodeis ’new citizens’. Tyrtaeus’ compares the enslaved Helots to ’donkeys worn down by heavy loads’, a downtrodden minority group with no great power. However, Thucydides accounts for their de-facto influence in Spartan administration, with ’most of their decisions with a view to precautions against the Helots. Finley supports this assessment, identifying certain advantages Helots held over other slave groups in this era. The basic rights of the Helots included the right to their own possessions; the ability to retain a percentage of their crop; and ’in general, all the normal human institutions except their freedom’. Hellenic culture in the Spartan community was that of a humble elite. True Spartan culture is well captured in Xenophon’s work, Spartan Society, as he wrote of how this elitist society viewed not only themselves, but the other countries around them. This work shines light into the three-part worldview of the ancient, Hellenic Spartans of: humanism, idealism, and rationalism. As Xenophon begins to write over the whole of the Spartan society it can be seen how the Spartans lived out the worldview of this Hellenistic society. This living out of the worldview recorded in Xenophon’s, Spartan Society, illustrates their worldview through the noting of Lycurgus’ accomplishments and the contrast of the “other.”
Religion was important to the populace of Sparta as it helped support the ideals of a militaristic utopian society, as Socrates states, “Those who honor the gods most finely with choruses are best in war”. The gods that the Spartans worshipped most prominently were Apollo and Artemis Orthia, both of whom explicitly demonstrate the militaristic nature of Sparta, as they are associated with victory, wisdom, and skill in battle. Religious festivals were also held in honor of the gods, and Xenophon states, “Religious festivals were occasions of public display”, during these festivals, all political and governmental affairs were put on hold; this indicates significance to religion, and funerary practices as many festivals
The Beginning of Sparta In about 100 BCE, the Dorians invaded Greece from the North. During the Dark Ages, the Dorians made their way south, capturing the inhabitants of the lands they passed through as helots. At the beginning of the Dark Ages, it is thought that there were many Dorian settlements in Laconia, each with their own helot population. At some time during the Dark Ages, Sparta overtook these fellow Dorian settlements and their helot populations, as well as control of the whole of Laconia. The Spartans kept the helots as a huge, strong slave race and, although they did not enslave their fellow Dorians, the other Dorians were made perioci, meaning "those who live round about". The perioci were needed to be the craftsmen, tradesmen and manufacturers for the Spartans, who were trained as full time soldiers.
Like most Greek states of the Archaic and Classical Era, the Spartan city-state was a militaristic one. Sparta, however, took the idea to its extreme. In order to become the best soldiers, Spartan citizens had to dedicate their entire lives to the occupation. In fact to be a soldier – a hoplite – was the full infrastructure of Spartan society. In fact each time new ephors were voted in, the helots would be rounded up and given an ‘annual beating’, so as the helots knew their place. However this treatment of the helots simply made the helots hate the Spartans, causing the Spartans to be even more prepared to an uprising, bringing the whole dilemma around in a circle.
The definition of the word slavery encompasses a vast array of connotations, meanings, and values; in order understand slavery conditions in Athens and Sparta, it is important to decipher exactly what the word both means and implies. For all intents and purposes, in this essay the word slavery will refer to the non-citizen people of both Athens and Sparta who are enslaved by either the state or an individual person, depending on the state they live in. Slaves are the lowest class of citizens in each of the two states, and are often used for hard labour and general housekeeping, depending on the city in which they live. Forming the largest number of people in the community, slaves play a vital role in the economy of their state.
The city-state Sparta was recognized as one of the strongest military oriented city-states in Ancient Greece during the period beginning in 431 BCE until around 192 BCE. The people who lived there were called Spartans. They were great warriors of Greece. A close by city- state called Athens was (and still is) the capital of Greece. This city-state however was different in both geography and culture. The differences in culture between Sparta and Athens were influenced by the differences in geography.
The Lacedaemonians were not content with simply sending aid to Sicily; they also resolved to take the war to the Athenians. The Corinthians, the Spartans, and others in the Peloponnesian League sent more reinforcements to Syracuse, in the hopes of driving off the Athenians; but instead of withdrawing; the Athenians sent another hundred ships and another 5,000 troops to Sicily. Under Gylippus, the Syracusans and their allies were able to decisively defeat the Athenians on land; and Gylippus encouraged the Syracusans to build a navy, which was able to defeat the Athenian fleet when they attempted to withdraw. The Athenian army, attempting to withdraw overland to other, more friendly Sicilian cities, was divided and defeated; the entire Athenian fleet was destroyed, and virtually the entire Athenian army was sold off into slavery.
The Greek city states of Athens and Sparta pioneered two uniquely different systems for administering the everyday lives of their citizenry. In many ways each was uniquely shaped by the cultural nuances and specific challenges they faced. For Sparta the key concern was a system that most efficiently protected them from the perceived threat of a massive slave population that outnumbered the Spartans as greatly as seven to one at some point. For the Athenians it was the need to balance the demands of the general citizen population versus the interests of the Aristocratic elite.
Because of the tranquil times, the civilization’s society had more time to focus on writing, math, astronomy, and artistic fields, as well as trade and metallurgy. Out of all the city-states of Greece, two excelled over all the rest, Sparta and Athens. Even though they were the most advanced and strong civilizations, they were bitter enemies. While Athens focused mainly on the people’s democracy and citizen rights, Sparta were ferocious and enslaved its original inhabitants, making them unable to leave and kept under a close eye to prevent insurgence (History of Greece:The Golden Age of Greece). Additionally, Sparta had strict and trained soldiers that underwent intense physical exercising and instruction.
