The Spanish-American War was a strife in 1898 between Spain and the United States, the ontogeny of U.S. intersession in the Cuban War of Independence. Cubans had long been striving for independence from the Spanish. In 1868 the Cubans declared independence. This uprising would end unsuccessful in 1878 by the hands of Arsenio Martínez Campos. This unsuccessful upheaval is known as the Ten Years’ War. A second revolt by the Cubans, “La Guerra Chiquita” (“The Little War”), engineered by Calixto García, started in August 1879 but was crushed by the much superior Spanish military in the autumn of 1880. American sentiment was high towards Cuban independence. Imperialism played a big role in the start of the Spanish-American war as well. Spain was depleted of resources from all of the wars they had in the 19th century, so it was very difficult to sustain territories in the Americas. The Monroe Doctrine was created, so when Spain started treating the Cubans horribly, the U.S. intervened. The Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine was the spark that ignited the war. Tensions between the U.S. and Spain had grown to a very dangerous level. The U.S. sent the battleship to protect Cuban exports and Americans living in Cuba. Suddenly, it exploded in Havana Harbour. The news got to America, so Hearst and Pulitzer took advantage of the situation and blamed the Spanish. Americans were outraged, they were demanding the U.S. go to war with Spain.
