Some Kind of Heaven
Sonny’s Blues written by James Baldwin appears to suggest that family and faith are important aspects in someone’s life and that each person has a different way of dealing with their own demons. The author writes with an expressive purpose and narrative pattern to convey his message and by analyzing the main characters, the point of view of the narration, the conflict in the story and the literary devices Baldwin utilizes throughout his tale, his central idea can be better understood.

Big brother hasn’t heard about him since that day and he “[Is] scared, scared for Sonny” (47). As the story continues, big brother has a flashback of his childhood; his brother Sonny and his mother are in it. Mother asks big brother to take care of his younger brother, ever since that day Sonny has been a responsibility to him and when Sonny expresses he wants to be a jazz piano player, the narrator thinks this is a waste of his life and that he has failed to his mother wishes. “For me, then, as they began to play again, it glowed and shook above my brother’s head like the very cup of trembling” (68). This is a religious reference to a passage in the Bible (Isaiah 51: 17-23). Sonny has been fighting with his demons for so long and now he can finally be happy with himself, God has basically expelled the allurement that at first made his outrage. “There isn’t any other tale to tell, it’s the only light we’ve got in all this darkness” (67). Light against darkness is being implored in this statement. Big brother represents light because he is a ‘right’ man and Sonny represents darkness because he feels attracted by the world’s temptations.
