Sonnet 146 by William Shakespeare
The body-soul dichotomy was a fairly common theme that was debated literarily from the middle ages to the Elizabethan period. Unbeknownst to many people William Shakespeare on multiple occasions referenced it. Of the literary works he composed, sonnet 146 is one of the most pronounced in its own right while being debated on multiple levels. It has such been correlated with others of his prior written sonnets and plays, sung as a hymn, recited at funerals, and compared against many pages and passages of the bible spanning from Genesis to Revelations but most likely viewed in terms of the Anglican Church. The Shakespeare Quarterly is a well-known journal that centers on all things Shakespearian. In 1976, Michael West, a writer and professor at the University of Pittsburg, went into great detail on this topic discussing Francis Davison’s Poetical Rhapsody “Tarquins in Lucrece” and Barbabe Googe’s translation of Paligenius’s “Zodiacus Vitae” all as a backdrop to solidify this argument that Shakespeare was a Christian writing on this subject (West, 111-116). During this essay, West went in belief was that sonnet 146, to be read correctly, must be viewed more from a Christian standpoint. His basis for this is that Shakespeare held that there is an ongoing conflict for which the body is attempting to subject the soul. Upon death though, the soul is victorious because, even though it goes without saying, the worms eat the body and loose the soul to be free (116).

To justify his position, Huttar brings to bear Shakespeare’s own words in this sonnet by using the term “fading mansions”, which in this situation maybe read in a plurality of ways. From a strictly Judeo-Christian standpoint as the body being destroyed by time, but from heterodoxical vantage point, it would be read to be a satiric play on the clergy establishment of the indulgencies for the rich (362-363). To put it mildly, Charles A. Huttar and Michael West have diametrically opposing vantage points. While West argues for the Church, Huttar was for a humanist stand point. But no matter whether they disagreed on Shakespeare’s state of mind, they both would agree he was a master of sonnets weaving his ideals into 14 lines of pure literary genius.

Sonnet 130 is Shakespeare’s harsh yet realistic tribute to his quite ordinary mistress. Conventional love poetry of his time would employ Petrarchan imagery and entertain notions of courtly love. Francis Petrarch, often noted for his perfection of the sonnet form, developed a number of techniques for describing love’s pleasures and torments as well as the beauty of the beloved. While Shakespeare adheres to this form, he undermines it as well. Through the use of deliberately subversive wordplay and exaggerated similes, ambiguous concepts, and adherence to the sonnet form, Shakespeare creates a parody of the traditional love sonnet. Although, in the end, Shakespeare embraces the overall Petrarchan theme of total and consuming love.

	The meter is iambic pentameter and the rhythm is fairly regular throughout the sonnet. However, in a number of lines there are spondaic feet, used to emphasise threats to the beauty and the idea of eternity. Clear examples of this are the "Rough winds" in line 3 and the "death" that will not "brag" in line 11. In the latter example the threat of death is reinforced by the assonance between the words "death" and "brag". Line 9 is an interesting line as regards the rhythm. For the last two feet reinforce the turn, introduced by the "But". A regular rhythm would have a stress on "shall", followed by an unstressed "not". However, the opposite is true. This clearly adds to the contrasting quality of this line: after two regular iambic pentameters the stress on the "not" following the introductory "But" leaves no doubt about the turn the reader witnesses in this line. A truly beautiful example of a Shakespearean turn.

Truth and honesty are key elements to a good, healthy relationship. However, in Shakespeare's Sonnet 138, the key to a healthy relationship between the speaker and the Dark Lady is keeping up the lies they have constructed for one another. Through wordplay Shakespeare creates different levels of meaning, in doing this, he shows the nature of truth and flattery in relationships.
Much has been made (by those who have chosen to notice) of the fact that in Shakespeare's sonnets, the beloved is a young man. It is remarkable, from a historical point of view, and raises intriguing, though unanswerable, questions about the nature of Shakespeare's relationship to the young man who inspired these sonnets. Given 16th-Century England's censorious attitudes towards homosexuality, it might seem surprising that Will's beloved is male. However, in terms of the conventions of the poetry of idealized, courtly love, it makes surprisingly little difference whether Will's beloved is male or female; to put the matter more strongly, in some ways it makes more sense for the beloved to be male.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) lived in a time of religious turbulence. During the Renaissance people began to move away from the Church. Authors began to focus on the morals of the individual and on less lofty ideals than those of the Middle Ages. Shakespeare wrote one-hundred fifty-four sonnets during his lifetime. Within these sonnets he largely explored romantic love, not the love of God. In Sonnet 29 Shakespeare uses specific word choice and rhyme to show the reader that it is easy to be hopeful when life is going well, but love is always there, for rich and poor alike, even when religion fails.
“Sonnet 73,” published by William Shakespeare in 1609, reveals through symbolic imagery and metaphors mans promised fate, death. In a melancholy mood, the narrator concedes that many years have passed by and that the end of his life draws ever near. In this essay I will detail the use of symbolic imagery and metaphors in “Sonnet 73” and how it portrays the author’s experience of aging.
