Solutions To Drought In California

California is currently in one of the most severe droughts the state has experienced thus far in California’s history. A drought is defined to be a “period of dry weather, especially a long period that is injurious to crops; an extended shortage” (Dictionary. Web). California is a state that is not well known for the amount of rain the state receives in a given year; California is known as a state of nice weather year round and this idea of nice weather typically does not include rain, or wet weather to most people. The price Californians pay for nice weather year round and not enough rainfall comes at a hefty price, a price of having a severe drought and water shortage. California is one of the largest states in the United States of America
Although the drought is not the only factor in the lowering of California’s water supply, it is difficult to maintain water levels in reservoirs without watering coming in to the state. California does not need a quick-fix way of getting water to the state to help with the issue of the water supply, as this does not address both the root cause of the drought nor does it solve the problem of the water shortage in the long run. In order to address the drought and find a solution, state officials, as well as the residents of California, need to understand and become knowledgeable about why there is a drought to begin with. There are measures and an executive order that have been put into place by state officials and local authorities; however, these measures only address the solution of conserving water, not replenishing it. A solution to the California drought can be grey water recycling. Grey water recycling can also deal with the root of the drought problem: climate
Although the water is not being directed to the reservoirs, lakes, streams and dams, the water is replenishing the land, which helps with the dry soil. The climate change causes rising temperatures – warmer and dryer are days hurt California because it dries out the land through evaporation. If water is being put back into the land, the grass, the plants and trees, this allows for condensation to occur. Condensation is the process in the water cycle that takes water in gaseous and vapor forms and turns it into liquid form, such as precipitation. Condensation will take place with gray water recycling because evaporation can occur without the continued major loss of water in the reservoirs. In order for it to rain, there has to be enough evaporated water in the air that forms clouds and then goes through the atmosphere and finally condensates into precipitation (USGS. Web). By using grey water there will be other forms of water that can be evaporated into the atmosphere. There are plastic balls currently being used in California known as “shade balls” (ABC News), these shade balls stop evaporation from happening in the water supply. With both grey water and shade balls being placed at the reservoirs this can help evaporation occur with the grey water, this contributes to the water cycle, and helps with climate change as well as ultimately producing water for California. This water can
