Social networking sites have taken the world by storm including Jamaica, leading to nothing less than a revolution. However, several concerns have been voice about social networking sites taking over our lives.
One major issue that has been over looked is how our youth in particular interact online and in the real life situations. This trend is also very popular among the Jamaican population in particular our adolescent as well as with adult too. They are the ones who a re caught up in the trend the most. It is with this in mind that we can say that adolescences years shape our outlook, our personality and mold us into who we are. It is therefore safe to say that social interaction comes before development, consciousness and cognition are the end product of socialization and social behaviours according to Lev Vygotsky ‘s theory of social development ( ).
Vygotsky focused on the connection between people and social-cultural context in which they act and interact in shared experienced (Crawford, 1996). This he says that humans use tools that develop from a culture, such as speech and writing. In this case it would be technology to mediate their social environment. Vygotsky believed that internalization of these tools led to higher thinking skills which we can see in Jamaica with the use of these social networking sites.
This shows that social factors contribute to cognitive development. According to Vygotsky “cognitive development stems from social interaction from guided learning with zone of proximal development in children” ( ). Also the environment is also a key factor in which individuals will grow up in will influence how they think and what they think about. Learning happens through participation in social activities.

Chapter 3
Questionnaire
The purpose of this questionnaire is to obtain general information about given individuals and their social network habits. All these results gathered from this questionnaire will be used solely for academic purpose and can be seen in a research paper about: Does online social networking make people more or less likely to interact with people in the real world.
This research is conducted by the group members of the Research Method class. This questionnaire will take approximately five minutes to complete. Participation is optional and completely voluntary. The researcher assures confidentiality to your individual results.
By completing and returning the questionnaire you are hereby given full consent to use this data in this research paper.
The researchers went through the proper channels to get permission to carry out a study using the students who volunteered to participate. The research was conducted using a variety of different survey methods that were chosen to determine the degree and/...
Introduction: You are being asked to join in a research study. Please consider participating. Please ask any questions if you are not sure. Your involvement is voluntary.
Vygotsky’s theory makes assumptions about how children learn, but he emphasized the social context of learning more than Piaget 's cognitive constructivist theory. Piaget’s theory is used as the foundation for learning models in which the teacher has a limited role. Whereas, Vygotsky 's sociocultural theory both teachers and experienced peers play important roles in learning. Cognitive constructivism and Vygotsky 's sociocultural theory have common aspects between the two theories or an overlap. However, Vygotsky 's theory incorporates a more active and involved teacher role. Vygotsky in his theory advises that culture gives the child the cognitive tools needed for development. The tools determine the pattern and rate of development of which the parents and teachers are conduits for the tools of the culture.
The social and cultural environment is seen as a pivotal influence on cognitive development because all social interactions are based on the prevailing culture. As the child interacts with its social and cultural environment, carers are subconsciously transmitting the prevalent culture It is up to adults to “socialise” the children into the appropriate skills so they can function appropriately.
The world has evolved into a technologically savvy and dependent society with the Internet readily available to many. Convenience and connection are vital to individuals, especially within the United States. Social networking sites have progressed to fit the demanding desires of today’s technological era (Albarran 118). The progression from the first social networking sites, such as Friendster or instant messaging, to the sites used today, such as Facebook and Twitter, has made a significant impact on society. Fifteen years ago it was unimaginable the advancements the world has made in many areas, especially in technology and the worldwide web. Remaining behind a computer screen for hours was once a foreign concept, but recently became commonplace among the younger generations. Social networks are the most frequently used and popular sites on the Internet. In the United States, the time spent on social networking sites is double the amount of time spent on any other site online and continues to increase (Wilcox and Stephen 90). Without a doubt, social networking sites are an ever-growing phenomenon that is prominent in society.
Now within the rest of this paper you will be finding a few different things getting discussed. Staring it off we will be discussing the articles that we have found to make our arguments and hypotheses. After wrapping up the literature reviews we will be discussing the hypotheses thus continuing onto our variables and indicators. Once we discuss our hypotheses we will be moving onto the research design. The research design will have our general issues, sampling, and methods.
Language development begins in preschool and is a tool used to create positive social behavior. According to Vygotsky, language is critical for cognitive growth. Collaboration is possible through language. Students can model ways of thinking for each other (Ormrod, 2008). The social competence of a child can be determined by his or her verbal responses. Positive responses build positive relationships. Acceptance by peers is an influential judge of social approval throughout life; therefore, social skills need to begin at a young age (Jalongo, 2006). These skills play a significant role in building and maintaining stable friendships, careers and marriages. Reading, writing, and computing are valuable skills but are of little use if the person cannot apply these skills in cooperative setting later in life (Johnson, D. & Johnson, R., 1997). There is now a greater importance regarding social behavior in the classroom environment.
The research design in this study was created following a number of choices related with the reason/purpose of the topic.
Social cognition is very important to young child’s development. A child’s key development takes place during the first five years of a child’s life. (Child Encyclopedia) A child’s environmental factors play a huge role in their mental development. Social cognition has produced a knowledge that psychologists now have a better understanding about
This research is unique because it will give light to the individuals who are against social networking that will not take to consideration that it has any positive outcomes at all and to those who believe that social networking has no downfalls and are too blinded by the social networking to even notice the affects it has on their own lives.
Growing up, everyone has different upbringings and everyone develops in different ways or at different rates. Their social class, social background, and or gender identities play a large role in the way which they perceive the world and in the way that the world perceives them. According to Vgotsky social interactions play a crucial role in the development of cognition. This term refers to the mental processes that are involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These processes include thinking, knowing, remembering, judging
This chapter forms a general introduction to the study. The first two sections of the chapter give the background to the study and the problem statement. ...interact with their caregivers and through interaction not only their cognitive abilities are shaped by also their personality and behaviour in later stage of their life (Triandis & Suh, 2002). The essay is considering the background that social relation flourishes, namely interaction child – adult and peer relations. Through their early experiences with others, children develop their understanding of the world. By simple activities that are carried out on daily basis between children and caregivers, children are able to gain the meaning of new techniques and learning strategies, they expand their existing knowledge and experience new things. The interesting aspect is to elaborate on social interaction within different groups of children. Although the cognitive abilities may not fully develop in every child, social interaction encourages and prompts the progress.
This section provided an outline of the research, which the author adopted to complete the research questions of the project. It provides a summary of the research methodology, which was used, and the reasons for using such methods.
The researcher employed a self-administered questionnaire to collect the primary data. The self-administered questionnaire is a technique used to engage in the needed data collection. Zikmund (2004) stat...
