In my definition, social workers are those that provide assistance to individuals in need. They are passionate about humanity and have the desire to make a difference in the lives of those who are going through challenges in life. These challenges can range from mental health, poverty, substance abuse, and neglect to name a few. I chose to pursue a social worker degree because it is a diverse field and it allows you to work with many groups of clients with individual needs. I have come to understand that even though the career is diverse, social work is about choosing a path that best fits an individual as far as specific experiences with working with certain groups of clients. I watched my grandmother care for my grandfather who suffered from alzermiers. At the time, I did not know what alzermiers was, I saw it as the processes of getting old. I enjoyed the care and compassion my grandmother provided, and I wanted to do the same when I got older. When I was in highschool, my church friends and I volunteered to perfrom a dance at a nursing home that one of the parents worked at. While up there, I could see all the smiling faces on all the residents and you could tell that us performing was something that made their day. People fail to understand the different changes a person goes through as they age. Most are forced to move from their homes and are places in residential homes since they are not equipped to live alone or their familes are not able to care for them. This causes someone to feel unwanted and causes them to be inactive in the community and unltimately it will lead to them suffering from deppresion. The elderly will also face numerous health problems that result in emotional, financial, and social needs. Through social work, clients have the ability to gain self-empowerment through effective social work
