Personal Statement Social work is a profession in which one can effect change, empower, and inspire others to reach their goals, change their perspectives and realize their fullest potential. My life goal is to dedicate my time to giving back to impoverished communities and those who have encountered insurmountable obstacles. I am a first generation college graduate, a head start graduate, former resident of the Marcos De Niza Housing projects in Phoenix, AZ, a person who has seen firsthand the effects of untreated mental illness, a person greatly impacted by suicide, a divorcee, a single mother, and a recipient of state benefits including Medicaid, nutrition and childcare assistance. These experiences have shaped who I am as a person and …show more content…
I am in my second year of the MSW program and have gained an abundance of knowledge to apply to my practical experiences. My goal is to serve families who are facing situations which require support for both simple and complex and needs. It is my hope that I will have the ability to meet them where they are and provide support in the areas in which they feel they have the most need. I believe it is important to view the family as a whole and practice a family centered approach as I feel this will be most impactful for the family. I want to empower the family system to support one another and utilize their resources and resiliency to overcome their situations. I also want to challenge systemic deficiencies and inequalities as many times the failure and difficulties of the family are a result of the failures of education, employment, housing and many other systems. I want to challenge those who say individuals must pull themselves up by their bootstraps; I want be an advocate for those who many times have no voice and feel unheard and unworthy and incapable of change. A social worker wears many hats and through our roles as case manager, family support specialist, therapist, victim advocate, medical social worker, we have the ability to effect and be the
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My innovation to help disadvantaged children with social and emotional problems encompassed me to continue to pursue a career in the Social Service Profession. This will increase my chances of being a successful Child Therapist. I am aware, prepared and committed to devoting my time towards my studies at Fordham University as well as taking advantage of all the necessary resources that Fordham University has to offer. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.
The MSW degree along with my bachelors in psychology gives me a great opportunity to build my career as a social worker who will strive to act as a leader and empower others to help those in need. When I have gained efficient experience and expertise in my role as a social worker, I want to educate others on child welfare and family violence. Sharing knowledge and educating is a boundless way to make an impact and promote resilience within the
...rs. I have completed a minor in philosophy, with a strong emphasis on health care and medical ethics. I plan to carry out the best possible ethical behavior to protect the clients and staff at these social welfare institutions; my goal is to make a difference in these patients’ lives. I am seeking an MSW at the Kent School of Social Work for the purpose of gaining education, experience, and required credentials in order to prepare me in working with clients with disabilities and their families. I routinely go to workshops and continue my education outside of required classes, as this effort contributes to my wealth of knowledge surrounding geriatric social work and the duties that the profession requires. I am consumed with excitement and eagerness to begin the transition from student to professional, and I appreciate your consideration to help me reach my goal.
While volunteering there, I was placed in a local long-term care home for the elderly. This experience was highly beneficial. Working along side, nurses, care aids and other health care professionals was my first view inside the “system”. Volunteering at the Care Home, did not necessarily make up my mind on the field of social work but solidified my desire to work in the field of human services. I learnt from this experience at the hospital how profound my compassion for others truly was. It was not until my first year of college, that I started to volunteer with an organization that I am still with today and absolutely adore volunteering with. That organization is the Vernon Women’s Transition House in Vernon BC. I started off by filling in for employees who met in weekly meetings. While on the floor, I met many women who were in a place of ‘in-between’ and safety. This experience was eye opening. After a brief stay out-of-town, I returned to Vernon and again volunteered with the transition house – this time in another program: Support to Young Parents. This is an incredible housing program where young mothers who have fled abuse (potentially without the resources or parenting skills they truly need) can live long term. This apartment consists of 6 units, with the 7th unit converted into a resource and common space. The program
Travis Newman's caught a glimpse of something shinning on the ground as he walked down Parker street. He had been walking around town placing applications in various businesses for employment; he was exhausted. Picking the shining thing up he observed that it was a gold skeleton key. My lucky day he said to himself. But what would a gold key unlock..
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
My interest in the Advanced Standing program began when I was nearing the end of my Bachelors program for Social Work. I knew I wanted to automatically enroll in an MSW program right away, but dreaded the thought that it would take me an additional two years to complete a degree in which I am so desperately seeking. How fortunate I am to be able to have an opportunity such as this towards achieving my goals of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My interest in this program would encourage me to gain a wealth of knowledge to better serve and advocate for and within my community; the kind of knowledge that can make a difference in the lives of others. The Advanced Standing program will provide me with the ability to not only serve others
My reasons for wanting to become a Social worker are quite varied, the main one being to assist people in realising their potential and helping them reach their goals, and at this stage of my life I believe the experiences I have gained are extremely transferable in terms of working with the general public; but overall I can now offer the Social work profession and its clients a committed and caring attitude. I am a people’s person. I am passionately interested in listening to people’s problems and finding strategies to help solve them.
Social work is a broad profession which influences many areas of society and there are many experiences, beliefs, frustrations and hopes that have brought me to the point of starting a journey to become a social worker. From a young age my family has been a huge influence in my life. I am the oldest child with three younger siblings who have been and still are my closest friends. Growing up in a tight knit family I developed a keen desire to see children across Australia and the world included and accepted into loving homes rather than institutions. Being the oldest child, I also have a heightened sense of responsibility and have always wanted to use my life to bring some form of positive change.
Becoming a social worker would be the greatest and rewarding achievement I could ever accomplish. The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. (Australian Association of Social Workers, 2016, para. 2).The area I’m interested to work in is Child Abuse and young people with disability because of personal experience. One of my major inspiration through her quote is (Mother Teresa 2001) “If you can 't feed a hundred people, then feed just one". I connect with this quote because I know I can never change the whole world but I can make a different in one-person life. After I completed year 12 of high school education I wasn’t sure is social work was for me. I decided to do a diploma of community service to get more idea of what social work do. Studying a diploma of community motivated me more to pursue a career as a social worker. This essay will reflect on my past experience and the things motivated me the most to become social work practitioner. This reflection will discuss the values, beliefs as social worker.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are change agents and because of that, they aim to help people develop their skills and abilities to use resources provided to them to strengthen and improve their lives and communities to resolve problems. One of the main goal of social workers is to improve the well-being and lives of the most vulnerable populations, fight against poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and the underserviced population by emphasizing on the person-in-environment and social justice model. The social work profession, considerers the individuals’ internal and external struggles, while working with the individuals to examine their relationships, family, work environment, community, and other things that might impact them and identify ways to help address problems and challenges.
I chose to go into social work because the profession is not only my dream career, but my passion as well. The ability to call myself a social worker is not just my job title, but part of my identity. I have always wanted to make an impact on our world and be a leader in my generation, and social work is where my personal skill set and strengths will be best put to use. As the last 4 years in my undergraduate studies have rolled along, I have developed my unique, personal traits alongside brilliant minds belonging to the future social workers of America. Many of which plan on going right out into the field and using their degrees to make an immediate impact in their local communities. For me, I would love the opportunity to further hone my
