After more than a decade in the field and now nearing the completion of my Social Service Worker Diploma; I have yet to truly carve out a defined career path. However, I have further examined my work style, needs and values. This examination has not only validated my thoughts on further career development, but lead to exploration of areas I had not felt open to me. An example of this would be in my work in the field of child protection. My feeling that this at most would be on the fringe of my future work was confirmed when looking at how I enjoy creative problem solving, freedom to make administrative decisions, and approaching my work in a nonjudgmental style. As a creative problem solver, my position must give me the space and trust to think outside the box to resolve issues and meet client needs. Working within a host organisation has had its challenges over the years, but I enjoy the multidisciplinary approach to service, as it benefits the client and would greatly welcome that again. The next organisation that I work with must value their employees, providing proper education around personal safety, benefits for medical care, sick days including mental health days. An organisation that has room for growth and development and values education. As far as where this wonderful employer will be found? I am unsure. At this moment in time my education has taught me where I would like to go will require more education. So I am following that path. Learning has always been a key part of my self-care strategy as a single parent as well as a community care provider.
