After completion of the social work program I would like to work in a clinical setting. I would really like to be in a mental health center or a hospital working with military members. I don’t have and preference on the kinds of issues that I would like to work with. As long as I am helping veterans, I will be happy. The reason that I prefer to work under these condition is because I have a passion for working with military members, since I am prior military I feel like I can relate to them and I understand what they are going through. I know that it is very hard for military members to talk to civilian about their problems because civilians just don’t understand, no matter what they say. I will be required to have a diverse set of qualities …show more content…
Sometime I have a very hard time with juggling things in life. School, work, field practicum, gym time, being a father, being a husband and still trying to be involve within my community takes a toll. What I use to get my through all of these tasks is my motivation that I find inside me. I believe that as human we all want to be great, we just don’t know how to become great. If you ask a child what do they want to be when they grow up, they will probably say something like a singer, a basketball player or a famous doctor. You will never hear a child say, I want to be a cashier at Wal-Mart or a manager at Burger King. So what happened, what changed, why aren’t theses children what they said they wanted to be when they grow up. Well my theory is because they got hit in the face with life and didn’t know how to cope with it. I got accepted into four colleges when I graduate high school, but I didn’t have the money to go to them. Instead of me complaining about how my parents are not rich and could afford to pay for my education, I joined the military and still wen to college debt free and joining the military was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. I have the ability to change lives for the better, I think it would be a selfish thing if I didn’t use my gift to change others people lives …show more content…
I can actually change someone life, that is a powerful to have in my hands. I can be the person who takes a child out of a poverty area and assist them in finding a scholarship and having a better social well-being. I do not have to be a social worker to changes peoples lives I know that, but as a social worker I am able to hold the title. The title itself can help me assist people, because they know that this is my job, I am not just a guy on the street trying to help people, even though there is nothing wrong with that. The most unsatisfying thing for me is the pay for a social worker. I know a lot of people say that money is not everything, but I have bills to pay. Passion won’t pay my bills. A senior social worker makes about sixty thousand a year here in New York. That is a low salary for me, but I will make up for the salary with passion. I rather do something that I love with little pay, rather than to do something I don’t love for good pay. Money doesn’t bring happiness, but passion does and I prefer to be happy. I will just have to live on a
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity

Many people don’t know that social workers deal with more mental health than any psychologist, psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses combined. Interesting right? I would definitely have thought otherwise. Social work is a very unique field that is overlooked and should have quite a bit more appreciation than it does. Making it in the real world is tough but thanks to social work peoples civil rights are protected, people with mental illnesses are now able to afford humane treatment and society is more in tune with preventing child abuse and neglect. To be successful in the field of social work you have to care about what you are doing, have ethics, and have empathy… social work is not all about the money.
Before reading the chapter written by Allan Barksy, I had a different understanding of my values. Entering into the social work profession is providing a different outlook and definition regarding values. In the social work profession values are not only personal, they must also include my client’s values. For example, I will be working at Child Net during my field internship. Child Net is a facility for children that are abused, neglected, molested, and other situations that I will be exposed too. These families may have values similar to mine, but their values may be viewed differently. Emotional security was one of my highly desirable values for Table 1.1. After giving this some thought regarding the situations I will be working with, emotional security will be hard to maintain working at Child Net. I say this because my
I have always known that I wanted my life work to be helping others. Although I did not know what I wanted to do specifically, my goal was to find a career that can better lives of those less fortunate than I am, while also making a good living financially. Through schoolwork and volunteer experience I ultimately chose a path in social work, with an end goal of working with families who have been effected by addiction. I would like to work hands on with those who have the addiction, but would also love to help their family members cope with decisions made by their loved one.
Social work in School and Family setting interested me the most because I would want to make a difference in the lives of families with children. Social work is diverse since there are many groups of clients who have different needs, issues, and socioeconomic status. Since there are basics and principles that any social worker puts into the foundation for clinical social work. However, I have learned that clinical social work involves working with all types of circumstances, people, and self-interest. This social work program will help prepare my goals of becoming a licensed clinical social worker to improve lives of individuals, groups, and communities through social
Social workers play a very important role in many situations. Most people can only help an individual up until a certain point then they have no clue what to do to help the individual. A social worker comes up with a plan to help an individual that cannot help themselves. Without social workers many individuals will not know how to manage certain situations. They will come up with an idea that they believe is suitable and move on without thinking about it. Social work has come a long way from when it first began. Comparing then and now, social work is much better and very well organized. The people that are in need whether they are mentally ill or someone that cannot support themselves, are being taken care of properly. It is known that years
As an upcoming social worker I understand there are certain traits I portray that are strengths in the social work field. I also understand that were there are strengths, there are weaknesses. I did not realize what my strengths and weaknesses were until I began to practice in the field. Some strengths I have found in myself are good listening skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and time management skills. Along with those strengths I have found my weaknesses are speaking what I believe about a situation, procrastination, and taking on too much responsibility.
Allison and her children will receive the strength and support by residing with Ashley and her husband in a loving home where there is family morals and Christian values. Allison stated her faith is very important to her and is part of her coping skills. Also, Ashley can provide support to Allison and the children by transporting them to and from school and their aftercare appointments. Ashley stated she is familiar with the different resources within her community and she insured Allison and the children will receive the services they are entitled to.
"Do not become a social worker. You will not make any money and you will be stressed out all the time." My maternal grandparents were foster care parents from the 1980 's until April of this year. In that time they hosted over 250 children from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a child, I spent much of my time at my grandparents house and was exposed to the multiple aspects of the foster care system. I became close with the social workers who came to my grandmother 's house and when it came time for me to make a career choice, they all discouraged me from becoming a social worker. Despite their warnings I graduated with my Bachelor 's of Social Work from Saint Louis University in 2013 and began to work on my Master 's in Social Work in August of 2014.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
I have experienced crisis and a lot of pain that had a profound effect on me, after a process of soul searching I have decided the best use of the skills that I have acquired which satisfied a need to give back to my community. I therefore have chosen to become a social worker. While traveling around the world I found that I am capable of dealing calmly, sensitively and supportively with people in fraught and stressful situations. With this in mind I believe that a MSW would best suit. me as it would allow me to use those skills in order to help and support people. My goal is to continue on to post graduate studies at which point I would like to specialize in health and mental health issues that are faced by military veterans while understanding the policies that impact the military, veterans and service
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. Either way, I feel like I will be doing a great thing. As a professional, I want to help many people with their problems. I will encourage their opinions and ideas as well as help them form plans to better their
