Social Media is such a great tool, but what happens when a great tool is used to do bad. That’s what the tabloids and modeling companies do. They create unrealistic ideal bodies that people strive to obtain, but in the process of doing so they harm themselves. They develop eating disorders, depression, low self esteem, and body dissatisfaction. Over 30 million people suffer health issues trying to achieve “the ideal body” and the saddest part is that around six million of them die. Media is having an immense negative impact on body image and it needs to be stopped.
Body image impacts the lives of so many teenagers and adults worldwide. Although there may be some positive impacts like color equality the negative impacts outnumber the positive ones. To begin with, 50% of girls ages 11-13 see themselves as overweight. Most of them develop eating disorders and say that their eating disorders can be traced back to bullying. For example, when they go on auditions they are supposed to be a certain height, weight, and shape. The judges can cut you from walking in a show just because they don’t like the shape of your waist or the way you walk. Models are often body shamed if they don’t look like the average model which why most of them do extreme workouts and are on extreme diets to look like the average model, which is not healthy.
Last of all, 30 million people suffer health issues trying to achieve “the ideal body”and around six million of them die in the process. They develop depression, eating disorders, low self esteem, and body dissatisfaction. Some of them even become suicidal. All this because people feel that they have an image to keep up with.
