Social Media is Changing the World

Social media allows people share information on the Internet. A recent study by Pew Research found sixty-seven percent of people on the Internet use social media, such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, and Instagram (Widrich, 2013). The majority of social media users are women aged 30 and under who live in cities and attended college (Widrich). The majority of these women spend an average of three hours on the Internet. During this time, they are exposed to many different ideas, cultures, and people. This allows them to share ideas with people all over the world instantaneously.

A popular way that people share information is E-mail. The first E-mail was sent in 1971. It was sent between two computers, that were sitting beside each other in the same room, and said “qwertyuiop” (Arandilla, 2011). While the meaning of this message has been lost over time, E-mail has become increasingly popular throughout the years. G-mail, an online email site created by Google, has over 45 million accounts.

Another popular way people share information is through social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The first networking site called GeoCities was created in 1994. Forty-million people still use Classmates.com, a site created in 1995 to connect former classmates. Facebook, a company only nine years old, is the fastest growing social networking site with almost a billion users. Facebook was first created to connect the students at Harvard, but quickly grew into a global network (Arandilla, 2011).
