Americans, more specifically, millennials, tend to show more characteristics of narcissism than previous generations. Assistant professor and psychologist, Paul K. Piff conducted a series of studies measuring the link between narcissism and social class in Americans. The five studies conducted proved that those who belong to a higher social class or acquire abnormal amounts of wealth reported increased entitlement and narcissistic tendencies; more likely to behave in a narcissistic fashion (Piff, P. K. 2013). This discovery refined my focus to test the link between social media and narcissism. His own fans have even mocked West for displaying narcissistic characteristics, leading to the creation of the 2016 song, ‘I Love Kanye.” The song includes lyrics such as, “and I love you like Kanye loves Kanye.” West himself approves of these narcissistic characteristics, influencing the fans who praise him to increase their self-interests.
Generation Me was created by millennials and represents those who not only want to be wealthy and famous, but feel they deserve it (Grabianowski, 2011). The 21st century has made internet access easier and more affordable than ever before. Social media platforms have allowed us to have a preview of what the life of a celebrity behind closed doors is really like. Celebrities are the most influential people to exist due to their wealth and social status. Fan bases, especially young girls, lean towards this type of Hollywood conformity. Individuals follow the same trends their favorite celebrities follow and in general stalk their social media. Apps like the Kylie Jenner Official App increase a sense of self-interest in viewers. This app gives insight to where Kylie Jenner shops, how Kylie Jenner does her makeup, and basically behind-the-scenes content. Americans will put self worth to themselves by …show more content…

An ad with a quick link will be sponsored on Musical.ly, targeting specifically the age range 8-14. After 50 participants volunteer for each study, they will be asked to complete a survey. The survey will include the following yes or no questions: Do the amount of likes you receive reflect how good looking you are? Do you upload videos and pictures to receive fame? Do your favorite celebrities influence your actions? When you upload a picture with others in it, do you make sure you look good in it even when the others don’t? Does social media increase your self esteem? After this action is completed, volunteers from Musical.ly will be asked to record the best Musical.ly video to be on the featured page. Volunteers from Instagram will be asked to take the best selfie through the app’s camera to be on the featured page and additionally be sponsored onto others Instagram feeds. Both social media platforms will monitor the amount of selfies/videos retaken to reflect one's perfection needs to show to social media
