Americans, more specifically, millennials, tend to show more characteristics of narcissism than previous generations. Assistant professor and psychologist, Paul K. Piff conducted a series of studies measuring the link between narcissism and social class in Americans. The five studies conducted proved that those who belong to a higher social class or acquire abnormal amounts of wealth reported increased entitlement and narcissistic tendencies; more likely to behave in a narcissistic fashion (Piff, P. K. 2013). This discovery refined my focus to test the link between social media and narcissism. His own fans have even mocked West for displaying narcissistic characteristics, leading to the creation of the 2016 song, ‘I Love Kanye.” The song includes lyrics such as, “and I love you like Kanye loves Kanye.” West himself approves of these narcissistic characteristics, influencing the fans who praise him to increase their self-interests.
Generation Me was created by millennials and represents those who not only want to be wealthy and famous, but feel they deserve it (Grabianowski, 2011). The 21st century has made internet access easier and more affordable than ever before. Social media platforms have allowed us to have a preview of what the life of a celebrity behind closed doors is really like. Celebrities are the most influential people to exist due to their wealth and social status. Fan bases, especially young girls, lean towards this type of Hollywood conformity. Individuals follow the same trends their favorite celebrities follow and in general stalk their social media. Apps like the Kylie Jenner Official App increase a sense of self-interest in viewers. An ad with a quick link will be sponsored on Musical.ly, targeting specifically the age range 8-14. After 50 participants volunteer for each study, they will be asked to complete a survey. The survey will include the following yes or no questions: Do the amount of likes you receive reflect how good looking you are? Do you upload videos and pictures to receive fame? Do your favorite celebrities influence your actions? When you upload a picture with others in it, do you make sure you look good in it even when the others don’t? Does social media increase your self esteem? After this action is completed, volunteers from Musical.ly will be asked to record the best Musical.ly video to be on the featured page. Volunteers from Instagram will be asked to take the best selfie through the app’s camera to be on the featured page and additionally be sponsored onto others Instagram feeds. Today, our culture demands us to be perfect, thin, powerful, successful, smart, extraordinary, but when people begin to try achieving them, we start labeling them as narcissists. The problem is that it is impossible for anyone to please everyone. Brown defines narcissism as simply a “fear of never feeling extraordinary enough to be noticed, to be lovable, to belong, or to cultivate a sense of purpose” (22). Before giving out labels, it is wise to practice asking ourselves questions to clear the intentions and reasons of someone’s behavior. For example, teenagers posting pictures of themselves online to gain some attention reveals that the culture has taught them that they are as lovable as the number of likes and comments they get on social media. Negative feedback roots into negative thinking about vulnerability and causes them to shut themselves down and never show their real selves again. Christopher Lasch’s “The Culture of Narcissism” was initially printed in 1979, and has been a crucial focus of cultural and social criticism from that time on. English literary critic Frank Kermode named it, not incorrectly, a “hellfire sermon.” It is a comprehensive accusation of modern American culture. It just so happens to fit into a collection of other books which all have the same type of concerns that I have been occupying myself with in past months: Daniel Boorstin’s “The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America,” Guy Debord’s “Society of the Spectacle,” Philip Rieff’s entire works (especially “Charisma,” but also his earlier work on Freud).
The book Generation Me by Jean M. Twenge talks about many strong problems we in in today’s world. It has always been taught that our thoughts and feelings are important. It's no surprise that students are now being tested on it. Even when schools, parents, and the media are not specifically targeting self-esteem, they promote the equally powerful concepts of socially sanctioned self-focus, the unquestioned importance of the individual, and an unfettered optimism about young people's prospects. It explores the consequences of individualism that go beyond self-esteem, and all the ways that we consciously and unconsciously train children to expect so much out of life. Narcissism is displayed many times throughout Generation Me but I will be focusing on narcissism portrayed through parents and children, I do believe this happens often in this day and age.
What happens when Narcissism takes over a generation? Is that generation the only generation who is affected? A narcissistic generation does not happen on it 's own. Majority of Millennial 's characteristics are negative but not entirely negative. However, Generation Me only values themselves. Their overemphasis on self-esteem is well intentioned but often leads to narcissism. Both terms can be avoided with proper treatment.
When looking at the United States Presidents, we picture the president to embody great leadership skill, who could show strong communication skill, and be in a position to display power. When people elected the president, there are certain quality traits and skill that the president need to display. Some people will view the president as grandiose narcissism, while others may have a different perspective of the president. People who are narcissist, believe their selves to become more important than others. Narcissist people are also overconfident of their decision making, and have difficulty at learning from their mistake (Watts, Lilienfeld, Smith, Miller, Campbell, Waldman, Rubenzer, & Faschingbauer, 2013). There are different types of characteristics of narcissism: vulnerable and grandiose. Vulnerable narcissistic people, who are become anxious when they are not regarded as royalty. People who are vulnerable narcissism shows coming back and forward between feelings superiority and inferiority (Rohmann, Neumann, Herner, & Bierhoff, 2012). While grandiose narcissistic people are types to be viewed as leaders, however narcissistic people are overconfidence and put their needs before others.
We all love ourselves. That seems to be such a true statement that we do not bother to look it as a possible disorder. A person who loves himself is one thing but one who loves his reflection is another. A healthy person will love himself and his accomplishments. That person is all around happy and satisfied with himself. On the other hand one who is in love with his reflection is cause for narcissism. One who depends on the existence of a reflection to produce the emotion of self-love. It also makes it impossible for the person to tell himself what is reality or what is fantasy. Based on a research conducted, it is revealed that, Facebook users around the world logged into their account approximately 42,000 years of human time each day (Gutierrez, 2013). An article written by The New York Times stated that the current generations are becoming narcissistic and it is believed that social media are among the plausible factors that promotes it (Quenqua, 2013). However, how true can this statement be? Many researches have proven that social media is not the main cause of narcissism. It has been demonstrated via the real role of social media, the co-relation between social pressure and narcissism, the failure to conclude acceptance of criticism instead of narcissism, the current generation trend and the real problem of narcissism.
In Jean Twenge’s novel titled, “Generation Me”, she describes “Generation Me” as a group of self-obsessed, overconfident, assertive, miserable individuals. “Gen-Me” cares about what other people think so much they 'll go to great lengths to “impress” their peers. Self-obsession can be viewed as a sickness of the mind. Self-esteem and Social Media Social media has taken over the world of communication and has changed the ways in which we communicate on a daily basis. It is extremely influential in our lives because of how easily we are able to access these mediums of communication. I’m intrigued by the effects that social media has on people’s perceptions of their self-worth. Almost all of the social networking sites seem to measure, at least to some extent, the popularity level or status of its users.
Antifa(anti-fascists) is a far left extremist group that has been gaining large amounts of popularity in the recent year due to media coverage, their actions, and the way the public has viewed/accepted what they have been doing. Antifa was recently deemed a domestic terrorist group by the department of homeland security. Antifa was labeled as a domestic terrorist group because of their violent actions against individuals, organizations, and groups of people that disagree with them.
Recent research has uncovered that the Millennial Generation are more Narcissistic than previous generations (Orr et al., 2009). Narcissistic Personality Disorder is “identified by the presence of grandiose self-importance...” (Bender, 2012). Narcissists tend to see themselves as being intelligent, powerful, physically attractive, special and unique, and they expect special treatment from others while believing they owe nothing in return (McKinney, Kelly & Duran, 2012; Orr et al., 2009). The media has a strong influence on society, both negatively and positively. So when children as young as 6 are being influenced by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears; we as a society have lost site in what it is to be a positive influence. Kathleen Deveny and Raina Kelly raised awareness in their article “Girls Gone Bad?” which depicts the bad behavior and influences set by celebrities such as Hilton, Lohan, and Spears have any long term affects on young women. Are young women so riveted to the highlights of these celebrities and the media that surrounds their lifestyle that, as Deveny and Kelly boldly puts it, we are raising ‘prosti-tots’? Or can our young women look beyond the bad behavior with lavish lifestyles, and still make a wise decision based on common sense? Not only are young women bombarded with the lifestyle of these celebrities produced by the media but they are plagued with images of how they should behave and what they should look like. This is an adolescent crisis in a young woman’s life because from the stages of preteen to near adulthood is when young women are most susceptible to influence.
Narcissism in the Workplace Have you ever had the pleasure of working with an individual who was completely full of themselves? This person loved to be the center of attention and the topic of every subject, had extravagant dreams and considered themselves to be a person of many talents. This same person believed that they were a better leader than you would ever be and had no problem telling you that. He or she thought that the best way to gain the admiration of others and receive confirmation of their authority was by “talking down” to those who threaten them. The qualities that I mentioned are all common traits of a narcissist.
