Social Media Is Ruining Our Society According to a study done on social media, every one in seven people on the planet are members of Facebook and every day, Facebook has 4.5 billion “likes”, 4.75 billion shares, and over 300 million photo uploads (Constine). With this many people using social media and checking it so many times a day it makes you wonder if it has any effect on people, and the answer is yes it does. Social media prevents face to face communication, causes offline relationship problems, effects children’s brain and behavior, facilitates cyberbullying, and lowers people’s self-esteem. Studies have shown that the use of social media prevents face-to-face communication and creates offline communication problems, which ruins …show more content…
One study showed that 49.5% of students reported being victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported to have committed bullying behavior online (F. Mishna). It is also said that middle school children that were victims of cyberbullying were 2x more likely to commit suicide (D.D. Luxton). It is known that kids can be mean, but the fact that they can do it behind a screen anonymously makes it so much more common with social media. Bullies are not the only danger you have to worry about on social networks though, criminals use them as will to commit and promote crimes. Burglars watch your social media activity to figure out personal details and plans such as vacation information and photos to find a prime time to rob your house (Topping). Gang members also use social media to recruit members, coordinate crimes, and even threaten other gangs (McKinney). Criminals use social media to find out personal information that they could use to hack your online accounts. It is said that 68% of social media users share their birth date publicly, 63% share their high school name, 18% share their phone number and 12% share their pets name which could all be information used as account security verification ("Social Networking Sites Fuelling Stalking, Report Warns"). Many people who use social media networks do not truly know how dangerous it can
Is social media ruining our lives and society. Should you limit yourself from your cellphone to outside to hang out with friends or family that your texting over the phone. Kerry Coppinger argues that Snapchat is ruining our lives and we’re to blame. Social is great for society because if you and your friend or family live in another state or country you can keep it touch with them through social media. Although that’s does sound nice but it causes people to stay inside or stay on the phone all the time this causes a unhealthy lifestyle.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Since this generation was introduced to social networking sites, it changed the way we communicate with people. Social media is destroying real communication. People "write posts" on each others walls or “tweet” each other instead of picking up the phone and having an actual conversation with one another and catching up. Instead of meeting up with old family relatives and even meeting new ones you had no clue about in person, people instead upload pictures of themselves just to get "likes". Social Media is becoming the modern way to make friends and the new face-to-face confrontation. Social networks affect social skills. People are becoming more uncomfortable with any active and live socia...
This house believes that social media is one of the biggest problems in our society. Although social media is an easier and quicker way of communication it can cause many different problems to arise. Such as cyber-bullying, one out of four students have been cyber bullied at least once or more times. Privacy issues can also be an issue the longer you are interactive on social media. Social media is a way for people to be able to reconnect with long lost friends and family members as well as make new relationships with others.
“Social media can lead to stress and offline relationship problems. A 2016 study found that the overuse of social media as an adolescent may decrease success in relationships later in life.” (Overusing). People who have grown up in the age of multimedia know how to communicate more online with strangers than they do talking to people in real life. “Online communication hinders social and developmental cues.”
Social media has permeated throughout all aspects of daily life, especially affecting the social capability of teenagers and young adults. New technology continues to transform the contemporary world. While it may provide opportunities for students, business professionals, and family members to connect with one another, it also causes certain people to place too much emphasis on virtual interaction, leading them to ignore the outside world. Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, states that social media aids people in “building an image and identity for themselves,” but the risks and consequences it presents outweigh its potential benefits. Social media’s effect on productivity, communication, and public health has proved to be detrimental
Social Media, as we know, is only growing in popularity. Given that fact, will only become more prevalent in our daily lives as time passes. It will be only foolish to pay attention to how such an important part of our culture is affecting our society and the individuals in it. It is undoubtedly clear that social media comes with a fair amount of negative and positive mental effects. Social media does negatively affect the mental health of people by providing an exposure to vulgar content, cyber-bullying, and an insufficient amount of in-person interactions.
With all the new networking site it makes it easier for bullies to target their victims. Kids don’t understand when they reach a certain limit it can trigger the young kids mind to commit suicide. Bullying and suicide have a huge connection between the two. Getting bullied at school is one thing getting bullied on social media is another, there are more people that can see if they post public. Getting made fun of on social media can make the other kid sensitive and can get to them to the point where they cannot take it anymore. If kids have easy access to get online it is easy for them to find their victim, now a day kids know how to work the new websites. Among average 61% have received mean or embarrassing posts online and 59% have received mean texts, e-mails or instant messages (Anderson, Bresnahan, & Musatics, 2014). It is easier to bully on social media then is at school or anywhere else. Embarrassing pictures or even inappropriate pictures of the victim can be uploaded by the bully leading to embarrassment for everyone to see. It is much easier to be behind a screen not being face to face to attack with harsh word, or whatever it is to embarrass the kid. Being behind a screen doesn’t like kids socialize, which is what is wrong with the society
More bullying has been occurring because of the advancement in technology. Once again Brian Jung said “ According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous causal relationships formed through social media”. There is now more fake relationships and friendships because of all the easy access to hide yourself online, which can be extremely unsafe for anyone. In the article Brian Jung states,“While many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients, the sites can also prove a
With the way the world is now it should not be a surprise to anyone that social media has literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). These numbers just show what Facebook and Twitter have accomplished. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis. With one in four people using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, it is no wonder that all of these social media websites are considered to be important (Whiteman). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world. Social media can even allow people to see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives. According to Honor Whiteman,”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio (Whiteman).” Social media is a beast in its own right that is used by a multitude of people all over the world everyday for things such as updating their Twitter status for personal use to updating a company 's Facebook page on a weekly basis. Yes, there is no doubt about it, social media has done its share of very good things, but there is also an entire list of the negative things about using these websites that can really make a person question if they should even be on them. Social media has created a social problem in society and it is distorting how people are communicating with each other face to face. Social media in today’s day is seen as a worldwide antisocial epidemic amongst the younger generation and a few older adults born in the millennial. Social media is notably used more by the younger people in our society and around the world, considering that technology is more accessible and easier to use for them. This is because their generation was born into a technological and advancing society that it has adapted into modern society’s culture. Social media has become a part of today’s norm, in which people who own a smart phone have downloaded some sort of social media app in order to stay intact with family
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
