Social Media Is Ruining Our Society According to a study done on social media, every one in seven people on the planet are members of Facebook and every day, Facebook has 4.5 billion “likes”, 4.75 billion shares, and over 300 million photo uploads (Constine). With this many people using social media and checking it so many times a day it makes you wonder if it has any effect on people, and the answer is yes it does. Social media prevents face to face communication, causes offline relationship problems, effects children’s brain and behavior, facilitates cyberbullying, and lowers people’s self-esteem. One study showed that 49.5% of students reported being victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported to have committed bullying behavior online (F. Mishna). It is also said that middle school children that were victims of cyberbullying were 2x more likely to commit suicide (D.D. Luxton). It is known that kids can be mean, but the fact that they can do it behind a screen anonymously makes it so much more common with social media. Bullies are not the only danger you have to worry about on social networks though, criminals use them as will to commit and promote crimes. Burglars watch your social media activity to figure out personal details and plans such as vacation information and photos to find a prime time to rob your house (Topping). Gang members also use social media to recruit members, coordinate crimes, and even threaten other gangs (McKinney). Criminals use social media to find out personal information that they could use to hack your online accounts. It is said that 68% of social media users share their birth date publicly, 63% share their high school name, 18% share their phone number and 12% share their pets name which could all be information used as account security verification ("Social Networking Sites Fuelling Stalking, Report Warns").
