The Impact of the Media, the Internet, and Social Media
Many people today may not realize how much the media, Internet, and Social Media impacts their lives because of how reliant we’ve become on them. In “Of Losers and Moles: You Think Reality TV Just Writes Itself” by Derrick Speight, “Mind Over Mass Media” by Steven Pinker, or “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., each story may talk or argue about some issue that society faces in relation to media. In the first article I read by Derrick Speight, the main goal was to explain to the audience that reality TV is real, but in the scheme of the production, the writers and producers must transform the reality of it into a story line. In the next reading by Steven Pinker, the purpose of

I can admit that when I watch a reality TV show, I tend to envy the main character and think that is how I should act, or I will think that is how I should live my life. In no way, shape, or form is that how we should view life. There is a connection here between “Of Losers and Moles: You Think Reality TV Just Writes Itself” and “Mind Over Mass Media.” “Mind Over Mass Media” argues that media usage should be controlled. Well, that can relate with the fact of watching too much reality TV for example. This is a perfect connection of these two articles. It is okay to watch reality TV or TV in general for that matter, but people need to be aware of the time they spend watching it or be aware of the time they spend on the internet. “Negative Effects of Electronic Media on Society and Culture,” an article written by Puja Mondal had a good point that said, “Because the electronic images seen on the television screen look real, the mind is fooled—unless viewers constantly remind themselves that they are not real, which spoils the viewing experience.” If people were to spend too much time on media, they will not perceive reality as it should be which leads us into the story “Harrison Bergeron.” In “Harrison Bergeron,” people can not show their true potential in life because of their handicaps. Everyone is different, but with handicaps, no one will be able to see the true side of people. So, in a sense, media can be viewed as a handicap. Media may not show the full potential or reality of people or

According to Dr. Jean Louis Ntang Beb and Dr. Shantella Sherman, people are largely impacted by entertainment and different forms as media when they become more readily available and prominent in people’s lives. Postman refers to this as ‘media – metaphors’ that “classify the world for us, sequence it, frame it, enlarge it, reduce it, color it, [and] argue a case for what the world is like” (10). The media is able to do this because it knows it has a heavy influence in an individual's life. When an entity has knowledge of power, it is able to manipulate its delivery in anyway it wants. This is because at the end of the day, even if the information received is not practical, society will still end up talking about with

In Cassie Heidecker’s “The Real, the Bad, and the Ugly”, she explores the realities of reality television. She first admits she watches the very unrealistic culinary television shows with her husband for the shows amuse them. Since the shows are not realistic, Heidecker questions what the reality of reality television shows. She comes to a conclusion that the ideas of the shows are not real, but the people who play the characters are real. She believes characters and their situations are not real but the everyday lives of the people in-between the episodes are a part of our reality. These people playing roles in their shows must be at least a little like themselves while off the screen, which is most definitely real. Heidecker expresses that reality television is not real concerning the show, but of the people who have real lives beyond what the screen plays.

Whether we watch a group of people live together in a house (big brother), or watch them build the house (the Block), reality television exposes that little peeping tom in all of us. Reality TV satisfies that instinct of prying into the personal affairs of others, and the reality of reality television is that as humans we enjoy this. Reality TV is not much different from normal programs, like any program, reality television has the essentials, it has a mix of characters, it puts those characters in situation, and the result is usually a failure or success. But the catch of reality television is that the characters are real people, the story is not scripted, and with any failure or successes comes emotion. But does this reality TV revolution present the viewers with real life? Or does it present what the TV producers want the viewers to see?
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
He holds a master’s degree in American history from Western Connecticut State University. In this article Perritano argues that reality television is good and bad in many ways. Perritano goes on to say that reality television is bad because it is so overwhelming for the audience and the contestants because they are all hoping for instant fame. Perritano does not believe that reality television is completely bad for us and actually has its upsides. He believes that reality television can be useful for viewers and can raise awareness to certain cases that are shown on
Reality television has changed the world today by encouraging violent behavior, elevate imprudent personalities, and depict woman of their values. Many reality TV shows are driving young kids to be driven by money and fame. Our reality television make us seem ignorant to other countries. Young viewers of these reality TV shows do not realize that most of the shows are often scripted and are not “real”. Although the programming of reality TV can be highly entertaining, it is important to be aware of the messages, and values that these shows often portray. Since reality TV has such a strong foothold in American pop culture, it is likely not going anywhere or changing its content any time
