As someone who sees their future in the social media sphere of public relations, I found it necessary to revisiting the PRIA code of ethics and explore if the same rules apply. Increasingly businesses and individuals are using social media to communicate messages to the public, but are they following the same ethics that public relation practitioners would be if they were using tradition platforms of media?
The PRIA code of ethics was established to promote high standards of practice, define acceptable behaviours and develop a framework for professional behavior and responsibilities. Now that it is so easy to communicate to the public I have started to question are practitioners ignoring the code of ethics to create more frequent content even at the risk of publishing errors and damaging not only the business they work for but also their own credibility and reputation. Urban Decay has posted an image that influenced their social media community to ‘think’ about their position in the mascara debate. Is Too Faced’s ‘Better than Sex’ mascara really better than sex or should they try something else? While I will never know if this Instagram post was the result of a little cattiness in the beauty industry or a well planned strategy, Urban Decay have created a PR media storm effectively using Persuasion and media effects theories like Social learning theory and Elaboration likelihood theory to change the attitudes of the consumers. By using Instagram as their platform they have integrated social learning theory into their strategy to influence the opinions and behavior of the target public from a peer perspective, the publics trust and follow the messages they post (Johnston,

As I mention in a privacy post privacy and security of patients records is the main reason social media can be an issue in Healthcare facilities. The breach of patients privacy and security are some of the major negative affect that technology has already has on healthcare. Currently, social media plays a significant role in our everyday lives and the way people in society interacts with one another. A few years ago, before its influence reached the point where it is now, the large platforms such as Facebook or Twitter which function was merely to keep family and friends connected no matter where they were or what they were doing, and the requirements were an internet connection and a smart phone or a computer. People would share pictures or posts to keep others “updated” on their lives and what they were thinking. Now social media platforms are far more complicated. In various of them, such as Instagram or Snapchat, it is not enough to only share a picture or video of your day, but it is almost a requirement and people are pushed to take an extra mile further away and make yourself appear interesting in the eyes of others. The “feed” requires to be eye catching, the captions should be memorable, the places one goes to ought to look way better than they actually are, you have to include friends in such posts to prove one have a social life outside of the phone. The importance of the number of followers, likes or viewers
“Like my status,” “like my photo,” and “like my tweet” are all common phrases that can be overhead in any conversation, whether it is on the street or in your own home. Sharing a post on any social media can result in an explosion of awareness for all those who utilize these platforms. People have started to use social media to raise awareness for serious issues like Black Lives Matter or for simply sharing a video of a dog standing on its hind legs. Many social media platforms, specifically Facebook, have a reputation of posting photos that say, “1 like = 1 prayer.” Even though everyone knows these posts are anything but reliable, many users still tend to share the post and expose it to friends and family members. These organizations have
Engineering is one of the largest, most diverse and progressive professions. It is a highly respected profession. It guards public health and safety and is always in the best interest of society by attempting to improve the quality of life. With all professions, there are always circumstances where the image could be jeopardized. From the code of ethics, I will be discussing and analyzing article 77-7-IV. This article states: “A practitioner shall not attempt to gain an advantage over other practitioners by paying or accepting commission in securing professional engineering work”1. In other words this article relates to the term known as bribery, which is the act of persuasion which results in an advantage to one party, typically illegally or dishonestly.

Coca-Cola could use its social media network to introduce its products. This could be beneficial to the company, increase awareness of other products and increase revenue. Threats – The ever changing health-consciousness attitudes of the market could have a serious impact on Coca-Cola. This is a dominant threat because people are constantly trying to change their eating and drinking habits. In 1950 PRSA enacted the first "Professional Standards for the Practice of Public Relations," followed by the current Code of Ethics which includes six core values and six code provisions. The core values are "Advocacy, Honesty, Expertise, Independence, Loyalty, and Fairness and code provisions are "Free Flow of Information, Competition, Disclosure of Information, Safeguarding Confidences, Conflicts of Interest, and Enhancing the Profession." Even with these standards defining PR is difficult and organizations struggle with public perception of PR. Human nature influences choices for both organizations as well as the public. These standards have helped in defining the outcome of PR and the field endeavoring to create a professional profession ensuring what is relayed to the public and that it be ethical, truthful, and accurate.
Identity is defined as one’s personal characteristics or attributes and their membership of a social category. In today’s society it is important to note how social media impacts upon our individual identities.
It is no secret that social media has become a part of our everyday lives. This is a society where you are judged by how many Instragram likes your photos can get or how many followers you have on Twitter. Not only have social media become a part of our lives, it has changed the way. Whether it be lack of conversation at the dinner table or voicing our opinion on Twitter, there is no denying that social media is here to stay. While my fellow Rider students and I may be spending too much checking social media sites, it most certainly keeps us in touch with the Rider community.
As technology increases and develops in this century, the use of social media increases as well. Schools have begun adapting it, using it as their tool to inform students of any school related news. However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds. Schools should not require social media use in classes.

The pairing of social media and public relations has helped create new opportunities for brands through two-way communication, social case study campaigns, and social sharing.
