Is Social Media Beneficial to Teenagers? Over 1 billion people actively use social media demonstrating to be prominent in today’s society, with an apparent influence. Social media is a form of communication through the Internet where society can share thoughts, information, and messages to each other. Before “snap chatting” or “instant messaging” social media did not exist. The Internet created in 1958, purposed for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), was to spread important information related to the military from across the country (“Internet Society”). Over the years, social media has become an essential part of teenagers’ lives, being used for an interactive, informational and entertaining purpose. In the 21st century, “The Era of Technology”, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter rule teenagers’ lives as it takes a form as a real life friend. Although social media deteriorates social interaction, it positively impacts teenagers as it improves community, relationships, and self-confidence. Due to social media, teenagers have a part in the community and are able to promote organizations for advertisements. Teenagers seem to be more involved in politics according to senior writer Terdiman at CNET. During 2012, teenagers’ hot topic was the Presidential Election. Teenagers realize since they cannot vote until they are 18 they do not have a real opinion in anything related to politics in a voting room. Many teenagers stated “If I have the right, then might as well use it” (Balkam). Teens want to be connected with their community in order to get a mutual understanding of peers all around, and Twitter and blogs was the guide to many teenagers to express themselves freely. Without social media there would be no actual platform where voices can be heard, contradicting “freedom of speech”. Schools promote enthusiastic behavior, but most of it is derived from social media. If teens did not have the internet there would not be a huge increase in technology or there would not be the same technology society has today. Such statements can make one person think and start a chain reaction. Teenagers’ minds are developed in that mindset to start a chain reaction as a connection with one million people starts with one. Social media is truly beneficial to teenagers due to the fact our world would not be connected without it. Consider the following, retweet, and share with friends as social media is beneficial to all teenagers.
