Referring to the University of the New England views of social inclusion and my personal perspective, I personally believe Social Inclusion is having equality for all people no matter of their cultural differences and having equal access to resources to help them to succeed. We cannot have social justice in society if we do not consider cultural diversity and what each individual may need to be successful in the world. Social inclusion is interconnected with social justice, culture diversity, human dignity. Each culture had faced their share of hardships and experiences that shaped their personal values, morals and view of the world. On, April 2014 Flint, Michigan city manager made a decision that he thought would have been best for the city to save money. The city manager that was appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder switch to Flint river from Detroit water system; Instead it resulted in plenty individuals breaking out in rashes, deaths, behavioral issues and the people of flint having to rely on aid water from celebrities, national guard and aid water because of the contaminated water. Even though this crisis started way back in April of 2014 the crisis had lack of media coverage, recently late 2015 more individuals are now trying to support the crisis. As the story unfolds the thoughts that came to my mind were why did it take it a year for them to try to switch back to the Detroit water system. Why is money a big issue when many peoples ' lives are at stake? In both incidents were I had witness social inclusion being absent I believe recommendations such as those I listed below will assist with similar issues in the future. Recommendations are having individuals that not only qualified, but also have believed in social justice for all people. Another recommendation is maybe the police system needs to evaluate their police academy trainings. What can the police officers do different to not only protect themselves but others. I am a student in the BA completion program, this quarter I am studying psychology in the form of social research and redefining the role of a counselor. I have been able to look at myself as a learner as well as take a look at the profession I want to practice. I have discovered more than I thought I would be as a student at my age. I have learned that my understanding will only grow deeper and more profound as I progress in my degree program. I can see the need for newer and more innovative psychologist in the field and practice of psychology. I know psychology has a lot to do with the provider. In my opinion, the providers history and background helps create the atmosphere between client and provider.
Over the last 10 years or so, the way of looking at the concepts like poverty and social exclusion has changed by a million miles. More and more people are drawn towards the idea of thinking about such things in a more detailed manner so as to gain a deeper understanding of it. For that is the only way, we can actually move towards truly dealing with them, instead of being the bird that puts its most sincere efforts in trying to catch the horizon which always moves away from it. The reason behind this shift in people’s mentalities is the broad acknowledgment that poverty is about more than just low incomes. What lies at the heart of how most people understand ‘poverty’ are their observations of instances of lower than reasonably required consumption and inadequate living standards. Aspects of poor health, a shortened lifespan, limited access to education, knowledge and information, and powerlessness in various domains are also associations that this term has conjured up.
How does one fit in society and know what is acceptable? Social justice dictates our place in our community and society. Our own social justice views influence how we work as a whole. This includes fair treatment of every individual and making sure we all get the same opportunity as the next person. Equal opportunity should be available to everyone and there should be an open playing field for everyone. In our society, nothing is perfect. Not everyone agrees one hundred percent of the time and everyone can have different views based on institutions, political views and ideology.
This last year has definitely been a challenge for me, from new life changes to finishing up my degree. Over the course of my internship that was life changing, also had a positive and negative effects on my life. Despite how it ended it was definitely a lesson learned. I have learned a lot and also more about myself. I know what I wanted in this field and I do seek to get just that. One of the biggest factors at my internship was ethnics. My view of ethnics is different from when I first started my internship. By gaining knowledge and experiences has impacted how I feel and view ethnics. Ethnics is foremost a very important factor when it comes to social work as well in our daily lives. Ethnics are your moral principles of how you view yourself and ours behavior. It’s the differences between right and wrong. Though that is just a basic concept to ethnics, there is so much more to it.
Over the last couple of weeks, all of the readings, lectures, discussions and videos have been very informative. A lot of the information in the readings are what people experience daily or witness with their own eyes. The issues going on with class, gender, and race can be upsetting and hard to grasp because the reality of the matter is we live in a very segregated and divided society. Topics in the lecture that stood out were racial inequality and social movement. When it comes to racial inequality, I witnessed a similar situation while in undergraduate school. A professor at my school displayed hidden racial misconduct towards a black female student in a course.
Inclusion in classrooms is defined as combining students with disabilities and students without disabilities together in an educational environment. It provides all students with a better sense of belonging. They will enable friendships and evolve feelings of being a member of a diverse community (Bronson, 1999). Inclusion benefits students without disabilities by developing a sense of helping others and respecting other diverse people. By this, the students will build up an appreciation that everyone has unique yet wonderful abilities and personalities (Bronson, 1999). This will enhance their communication skills later in life. Inclusive classrooms provide students with disabilities a better education on the same level as their peers. Since all students would be in the same educational environment, they would follow the same curriculum and not separate ones based on their disability. The main element to a successful inclusive classroom, is the teachers effort to plan the curriculum to fit all students needs. Teachers must make sure that they are making the material challenging enough for students without special needs and understandable to students with special needs. Inclusive classrooms are beneficial to students with and without special needs.
Social Justice enables individuals to become more empowered and self-aware. It gives individuals equal access and diminishes negative prejudices and stereotypes. The minority in society is oppressed by the dominant ones and social justice strives to diminish that. I am privileged and that allows me to obtain an education to help others. I am going to use this to help others gain the same privileges that I have and be able to build the future they want. Throughout middle school I would have friends that would be made fun of or denied entry to certain social groups, unless they were with me. Just because they had a different skin color or their culture was different they were not allowed to play tag on the playground. Associating negative stereotypes and prejudices, about cultures or ethnicity, to a young child is not okay. Only letting a child join a game of tag when a member of the dominant group is accompanying them is also not okay. This is a huge issue in society and not just when it comes to children, teaching children to become culturally competent and aware at a young age will lead to the decrease of this social issue. I strive to be culturally competent enough to have the ability to aid various individuals on their road to empowerment, safety, and self-healing. Educating myself is just the first step, joining the Social Work program will help me expand my field of knowledge. Through this, I will be enabled to become a better social worker and
After the experience on taking the Race Literacy Quiz, I was quite unsettled due to the ongoing fact that there were numerous options under each question that account for stereotypes. For example, the majority of options are particularly constructed for individuals that do not have a a profound understanding of the realities of race. For example, the first question was concerning the number of genes that distinguishes an individual from all other races, however, there are no genes that do so. Before my exposure to specific race classes, I would have answered the questions quite incorrectly, however, I have a decent understanding of race, which has allowed me to do well in the quiz. Inclusion is the main issue within the inclusive learning environment, if a child doesn’t feel included within their environment then their learning will be effected by this. The Oxford English Dictionary defines inclusion as “the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure” (Oxford English Dictionary 2011: Inclusion) This means that every child should feel involved and included, no matter of there different learning abilities or levels. This can mean children who have special educational needs, such as dyslexia, physical disability or metal disability. Inclusion should provide opportunities for all children, no matter of their age, race, gender, disability, religion, ability or their background, to be involved within their learning environment. There are many definitions relating to diversity, equity and inclusion that and sometimes the terms used interchangeably. Definitions that are helpful in understand the concepts are as follows. Diversity can be the sum of the ways that people are both alike and different. The dimensions of diversity include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, culture, regions, mental and physical ability, class, and immigration status. While diversity itself is not value-laden term, the way that people react to diversity is driven by values, attitudes, beliefs, and so on. Throughout this term I have learned a lot about my values, attitudes, and beliefs, and I feel confident in my growing skills as a counsellor. In my first journal, I discussed how I am in the process of discovering my own triggers and how I am surprised that my triggers do not necessarily correlate with what I would deem as the most distressing experiences of my life.
