Throughout the semester, we have learned how different communities require different needs. When understanding each community, and their strengths and weaknesses, the nurses of the community can help out and give the community what they need. When choosing a community to research, the chosen zip code was 85206, which is part of Mesa, Arizona. In this essay, the author will discuss the social determinants in the chosen community. Social Within this community, there are numerous housing developments, food markets, social gatherings, and various businesses. These places provide the communities population with their daily needs. With all of the business industries, the people have the availability to achieve different jobs in specific areas. In …show more content…
addition, the community is located just a few blocks away from one of Mesa’s biggest hospitals. The hospital is centrally located, allowing the community to access it from all areas. Industries that are not available to the population are easily accessed by bus transportation. This form of public transportation provides the community with bus stops on every corner. The buses continuously run throughout the day, and late into the night hours. An interesting point about this community is how different the East side is from the West side. On the West side, there is a large community called Leisure World. This community primarily consists of people age 55 plus. The community is well kept up, there was nothing out of place, the landscape was beautiful, and it was welcoming to the community. However, on the East side, the community is more so business with one housing development. This housing development is run down, the streets are more cluttered with trash, there are numerous people standing at the bus stops. Ultimately, this area has a large social life, many people roam around having conversations with others, and there are gatherings close by like a mall, library, and movie theaters. Economic The population of Leisure World and the surrounding areas in the zip code of 85206, is 32,701 people. Within the last fourteen years, the population has grown 11.59 percent (Sperlings Best Places, 2014). Out of those people, according to Sperlings Best Places, 5.1% are unemployed. This percentage is much lower in consideration to the previous years. The job growth rate is positive, and more people than any other year are getting jobs in this area. When comparing the cost of living to the rest of the country, the cost of living in this area is 1.5%. This is lower than the average cost of living in the United States (Sperlings Best Places, 2014). In addition, when looking at the average housing costs, the median housing average is $157,500. Physical As stated earlier, the West side of the street contained a lot of greenery, the trees shaded the entire area, and the landscape was very well maintenance. On the East side, there was hardly any trees, none providing shade to the sidewalks. In addition to the physical appearance, the area is entirely accessible to all people, even those with disabilities. The sidewalks provide ramps, the business areas provide multiple entrances, and is free from any other physical barriers. As one drives around the neighborhood, the signs are printed in the English language. This could be a barrier to the people of this area because some of the population speaks Spanish. The physical aspect of this community is diverse, but in an overall well maintained area. Environmental The next determinant of health category is environmental.
The RNAO states “World Health Organization data suggests that environmental factors account for 24 per cent of the world’s burden of disease and 23 per cent of all deaths” (2012). Environmental determinants of health is mainly centered on whether not the area has clean air and water. This is because air and water are used in every person’s daily life, and if these are contaminated, the health of these persons can be compromised. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the records dating back from 2005 show that the water is safe for all persons, with no pollutants causing illnesses or diseases (Air System Facilities, 2015). In addition, the agency tested the water to see if it had any abnormal microbial levels. In the area there were no disinfectants or pollutants compromising the water. To further determine the environmental determinants, the air was also researched. Today, on September 11, 2015 the UV index was considered to be very high. The agency states “Protection against sun damage is needed” (UV Index, 2015). Since the UV index ranked to be in the very high category, people in this area need to take caution and were sun screen if outdoors. It is recommended that people stay in cool, air conditioned facilities between 1 pm and 4 pm. To continue, the AFS showed that there are no facilities producing air emissions (Air System Facilities, 2015). When there are no facilities producing air
emissions, this means that the air is clean and no pollution is being sent out into the community’s air. In conclusion, after analyzing and further research into this community, one can see how the many different determinants affect one’s health. It is important for community nurses to understand what the circumstances of the area are and what they can do to help. Educated nurses are important in the community, without proper education, a nurse could hinder a community instead of help.

Health care providers not knowing their surrounding community impacts the way they provide health care to a patient. I hope to use my background in community work with underrepresented populations and the qualities I gained to hopefully reduce and someday diminish the concern that health care isn’t keeping up with the demographics of the surrounding community. The third health care concern I will talk about is another near and dear to me which is the severely low quality health care women in developing countries receive.
UTEP Blast: A Discourse Community Khaleb King University of Texas at El Paso UTEP Blast: A Discourse Community Introduction A Discourse Community is a group of people that share a set of goals or discourses and within this group, find ways to communicate about these set goals. Discourse Communities can mean having a spot on a sports team, being a part of a school club, and even your workplace can be considered a discourse community. To be accepted into a discourse community, one must be seen as a credible source, one that has knowledge on the topic at hand and can help the group reach the goals of the discourse community.
During one of my undergraduate courses, “Community and Population Health”, I completed a paper on my community and access to healthcare. During the research and community outreach performed to meet the goals of the paper, my eyes were opened to the plight of small communities in regards to access to quality healthcare. This plight has become my passion, and has formed the basis for my vision of the Family Nurse Practitioner role.

Chiefs Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is an extremely effective tool to help refine leadership and understand one’s self. The CPOA course offers a vast opportunity for self reflection and learning how to communicate with a multitude of different personalities. There were a plethora of topics taught during the 5 week course; however the topics that had the greatest influence and inspiration for me personally were the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), Disc profile, and ropes course.
A community can be defined as a group of people, who live, learn, work and play in an environment at a given time. (Yiu, 2012, p.213) There are many factors that may influence the community’s development and health status. These can include resources available, accessibility, transportation, safety, community needs etc… These influences may combine together to form community strengths and as well as community challenges or weaknesses. As a community health care nurse, it is significant for us to assess and identify these strengths and challenges within the community in order for us to intervene and provide the appropriate needed health care services for the community members. This individual scholarly paper will explore and focus on one challenge issue identified from our group community assessment.
Scouting for a Lifetime Millions… millions of discourse communities exist all around us each and every day. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, and Group Me are just a few of the many examples of the functional discourse communities that our world consists of today. A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses that are agreed upon as basic values and expectations and use communication to achieve set goals. There are six requirements to have a true discourse community. They must include: a community of people who share the same goals, regular communication, steady feedback and advice from one another, at least one means of communication that will assist in achieving an aspired goal, a lexis which is a

Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
When I started this class I thought I was somewhat alright writer. I understood the basics of writing and believed I knew how to write an entertaining piece. All of the papers we wrote showed me one of my weaknesses as a writer.

Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
I used to hate community service. I only did it if it was a requirement for graduation or for a program. Even when I did community service, I still waited until the very last opportunity to do it. When I heard the words community service, all I could picture is cleaning Philadelphia parks or streets that were filled with trash in either the cold or heat. My mind always went to that space because that 's what my first few encounters with community service consisted of. My high school always had us cleaning something; one time we re-landscaped the parking lot of a homeless shelter. Another time, we cleaned up the weeds out of the loading docks of the non-profit food bank Philabundance. One time my mom made me volunteer
Are you aware of the detrimental impacts that we have had on our environment? Every second, the Earth is being polluted by poisonous gases, waste products and due to human activities, the world’s climate is dramatically changing. In other words, these impacts do not only harm our environment but also our health. It has been scientifically proven that air pollution causes respiratory diseases and cancer, due to the inhalation of all the harmful chemicals. Water pollution can also lead to typhoid, diarrheal diseases and other waterborne disease, due to the intake of bacteria and parasites. Many people have died due to these health-related illnesses. So why are we still living in this awful condition? Air sustains us and water is a basic necessity, so we should do what we can to prevent pollution. In short, we should protect our environment to ensure a healthy life a...
